Welcome to WikiTree!

Many of us perform excellent genealogical research (or hire professionals to comb the archives) and put a lot of effort in constructing our own family trees. However, all such trees, however sophisticated, are growing in isolation.
One of the main aims of the WikiTree Project is to provide a central place on the Internet for kin information about all people we know ever lived, automatically construct bloodline trees, and watch the gradual emergence of global family forest of humanity. It might seem a huge undertaking, but in fact it is not. There is very little information that needs to be entered about any person - just name, names of his/her children, plus birth and death data; everything else can be inferred!
WikiTree uses open-source software MediaWiki - the same that is used by Wikipedia and other WikiMedia Foundation projects. That means we do not have to learn new syntax or editing tools. Never edited a MediaWiki website? Take a tutorial at Wikipedia.
WikiTree has been initiated by Tomáš J. Fülöpp (aka Vacilando) on 26 April 2005 as a free and collaborative project that is edited but also steered by users themselves. Use of WikiTree is - and will always be - provided at no charge. For more information about the project please follow this link.
