Egyptian blogger and former political prisoner Mohammed Maree spoke to CyberDissidents.org on this issue. “I think that this violates all the international treaties that were signed by the Egyptian government to protect freedom of religion,” Maree said. “The recent arrest of bus drivers who were not fasting in Cairo, authorized by Ismail Al Shaar, the director of Cairo’s security forces, proves that the claims of this regime - which always tries to send a message to the West that it’s a secular regime that protects the rights of individuals - are lies.”
Legal Status
Some Arab states do not have specific laws criminalizing the breaking of Ramadan. According to Maree, “There is no law in Egypt on this matter. Instead, many of those arrested for other accusations like drug possession.”
