Print: Design for Curious Minds
Print is a bimonthly magazine about visual culture and design. Founded in 1940 by William Edwin Rudge, Print is dedicated to showcasing the extraordinary in design on and off the page.

Lustig was a modernist designer who partook in nearly all disciplines of design (we, of course, focus on the book jackets). He began the journey as a book jacket designer in 1937. One of the most amazing accomplishments of his career and expressions of his creativity was when he found himself going blind and still conducted his design work, directing his wife and assistants by referring to the colors in his house and geometric shapes.
The Exile of Satan from Heavy Metal Design

Heavy metal has evolved visually as well. Gone are the fantasy illustrations of radioactive zombies and band logos composed of overlapping swords. After a generation of sprouting subgenres, the heavy metal field is littered with a diversity of styles that even the most hardy metalhead will have trouble encompassing.

The genre’s pervading preoccupation with the occult yields far less goat and pentagram iconography—which became self-conscious clichés almost instantly anyway—than more ambiguously dark imagery.

The Nabokov Collection

Nabokov was a passionate butterfly collector, a theme that has cropped up on some of his past covers. My idea was also a play on this concept. Each cover consists of a photograph of a specimen box, the kind used by collectors like Nabokov to display insects. Each box would be filled with paper, ephemera, and insect pins, selected to somehow evoke the book's content. And to make it more interesting for readers — and less daunting for me — I thought it would be fun to ask a group of talented designers to help create the boxes.
