Overall there is a strong body of evidence linking the use of technology to improvements in learning and outcomes for learners. The relationship is not a simple one. Time taken to embed the use of technology, school-level planning and learner competency and focus of use, and link to models of learning are all important in mediating the impact of technology on outcomes.
Schools that take a systematic and planned approach to using technology to support learning achieve better outcomes with technology than other schools. These ‘e-mature’ schools have a well-developed vision for learning and lead and manage their use of technology in support of this.
What is the Future of Teaching?
According to the New York Times Bits blog, a recent study funded by the US Department of Education (PDF) found that on the whole, online learning environments actually led to higher tested performance than face-to-face learning environments. “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction,” concluded the report’s authors in their key findings.
Participatory Learning | Active, self-directed learning

Class members will get to vote on what countries their teacher/guide visits and decide on the types of activities the class embarks on. Through their guide, students will interact with local people, ask them questions, request various media, and help solve real problems–all in an engaging format: participatory learning.

I wonder how many people are still using their lesson and unit plans from five years ago. To be a teacher, you must learn and adapt as the horizons and landscapes change.
