Coaches’ leadership skills that communicate trust building will increase teacher vulnerability and therefore teacher growth.
-
Quality coaches integrate the agendas of teachers, principals, and central office staff to bring the best learning opportunities to the students.
-
One of the key leadership skills of coaches is to identify the common vision of student achievement that drives the work of all stakeholders.
-
There is insufficient time in a coach’s schedule for enough one-on-one coaching of staff to bring about the desired growth. Effective coaches create partnerships, teams, and professional learning communities that provide coaching to each other in the coach’s absence.

journal writing is closest to natural
speech, and writing can flow without self-consciousness or inhibition. It
reveals thought processes and mental habits, it aids memory, and it provides a
context for healing and growth. -
Journals are tools for growth through critical reflection, for it is not
enough to observe and record experiences, but "equally important is the ability
to make meaning out of what is expressed" -
The journal
becomes another text on which to reflect, but it is a text written in the
learner's authentic voice, and this personal engagement adds a necessary
affective element to the learning process. -
Holt concluded
that either the guiding questions they were given did not motivate reflection or
they did not know how to write reflectively.

The most recent distance technology, the Internet, adds an interactive component not possible with the other technologies - collaborative communication over a prolonged period of time. Traditionally, distance education has been primarily between the instructor and the student, and there has been little or no opportunity for interaction among students.

Students are able to read and respond to all correspondence, thereby learning from each other as much as from the instructor.
-
ability for students to correspond, regardless of time zone.
-
Another clear advantage of asynchronous communication is that it allows students more time to think about questions posed, thus promotes higher quality responses.

Forget iTunes U: Students Now Getting College Credit via YouTube - ReadWriteWeb
A computer science professor at an Australian University is doing something revolutionary with YouTube - he's offering students who can't attend his classes college credit for watching his videos.
The fact that Buckland is not charging the high school students who are remotely attending his courses but is still giving them college credit is what makes what he's doing so different...and perhaps groundbreaking.

Linking the Information Commons to Learning

-
I see that one rationale for the Commons is to "get the students to the library." In our case, it has been very effective in attracting students…our gate count was 110 percent higher…so, it will attract students. But that begs the question?once they are in the building, what do we do with them? How do we engage them? The rationale for the learning commons, in my view, is that, properly designed, implemented, and operated, it will enhance student learning and scholarship. That is the real challenge, and the real goal, of the learning commons.3
-
Information commons have drawn students by offering environments that address their needs,4 bringing together technology, content, and services in a physical space that results in an environment different from that of a typical library.
-
The technology in an information commons is intentionally more pervasive than in most traditional academic libraries.
-
In an information commons, the underlying philosophy is to provide users with a seamless work environment so that they may access, manage, and produce information all at the same workstation.

Schools need to adapt to current student needs and identify new learning models that are engaging to younger generations.
-
To support such a change, both teaching practice and the tools used in the classroom must adapt. Assessment has also not kept pace with new modes of working, and must change along with teaching methods, tools, and materials.
-
Use of technology tools that are already familiar to students, project-based learning practices that incorporate real-life experiences, and mentoring from community members are a few practices that support increased engagement.Add Sticky Note

Technology tools that are part of everyday life for many students and working professionals should be seen as core tools of the teaching profession that teachers are required to master as any professional would master the tools of his or her trade.
-
Learners have increasing opportunities to take their education into their own hands, and options like informal education, online education, and home-based learning are attracting students away from traditional educational settings. If the system is to remain relevant it must adapt, but major change comes hard in education.

Technology continues to profoundly affect the way we work, collaborate, communicate, and succeed.
-
The digital divide, once seen as a factor of wealth, is now seen as a factor of education: those who have the opportunity to learn technology skills are in a better position to obtain and make use of technology than those who do not.
-
Once seen as an isolating influence, technology is now recognized as a primary way to stay in touch and take control of one’s own learning.
-
It gives students a public voice and a means to reach beyond the classroom for interaction and exploration.
-
They expect and experience personalized content in games and websites that is at odds with what they find in the classroom.
-
The “spaces” where students learn are becoming more community-driven, interdisciplinary, and supported by technologies that engage virtual communication and collaboration.
-
The ways we design learning experiences must reflect the growing importance of innovation and creativity as professional skills.
