Keys to drawing - Google Books

  • Dodson offers a complete system for developing drawing skills, basing his approach on 55 "keys" to drawing -- rules that don't need to be memorized, but realized. Dodson helps artists learn to trust their eyes and sharpen their observation skills through 48 practice exercises, reviews, and self-evaluations. Topics include learning to control proportion, scale, movement, depth, pattern and more!
  • Merely to see, therefore, is not enough. It is necessary to have a fresh, vivid, physical contact with the object you draw through as many of the senses as possible — and especially through the sense of touch. Our understanding of what we see is based to a large extent on touch.

Arnold Böcklin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  • Influenced by Romanticism his painting is symbolist with mythological subjects often overlapping with the Pre-Raphaelites. His pictures portray mythological, fantastical figures along classical architecture constructions (revealing often an obsession with death) creating a strange, fantasy world.

Böcklin is best known for his five versions of Isle of the Dead, which partly evokes the English Cemetery, Florence, close to his studio and where his baby daughter Maria had been buried. An early version of the painting was commissioned by a Madame Berna, a widow who wanted a painting with a dream-like atmosphere.[1]

caravaggio.com home page

Living 400 years ago in the time of the counter reformation; in the time of Shakespeare; Caravaggio staged scenes with lighting that inspires modern film directors.

Having lived with high quality images and movies; it is difficult for us to conceive the effect his realism had in its days. Every one of his works raised a scandal; and each one haunts us with intrigue even today.

YouTube - Chemical Brothers: Let Forever Be

  • I never share youtube clip but I'm gonna make exception this time. A music video by Michel Gondry, it illustrates a lady who suffers from delusions between real life and dreams. The whole setting may appears rather ragged intentionally but the visual effect is fascinating and impeccable, which I think is much better than most fractals or pop art I've seen lately.

The Art Directors Club / Hall of Fame :: Tadanori Yokoo

  • Tadanori Yokoo was born in Nishiwaki, Japan in 1936. As a teenager, his modest dreams were to work at a post office and to paint. He entered the profession by replicating paintings, designing store wrapping paper, and drawing posters for the Chamber of Commerce. His first notable work, a self-titled poster at the Persona group's 1965 joint exhibition, attracted attention because it diverged from contemporary graphic styles. This shocking poster featured a hanged man against a blue sky with red rays emanating from a rising sun. His name appeared at the top; the bottom corners held childhood photographs and the simple ironic statement, "having reached a climax at the age of 29, I was dead." The rising sun motif, considered old-fashioned at the time, recurs throughout his body of work and has become emblematic of "Yokoo style" and an international symbol of Japanese pop art.
