(PDF) Fourier Fiducial Tags - Circular markers

In this paper we introduce the Fourier tag, a synthetic
fiducial marker used to visually encode information and
provide controllable positioning. The Fourier tag is a synthetic
target akin to a bar-code that specifies multi-bit information
which can be efficiently and robustly detected in an
image.

Misc Tutorial: Creating ARToolKit Markers | osgART

This tutorial describes how to create markers for use with the ARToolKit tracking library.

Markers can be easily created in a graphics package and printed out, or even created by hand (such as using adhesive-backed felt). The marker should conform to the dimensions shown here:

Complementing on Augmented Reality Business Models | Agora Media Group Blog - Travel Industry, Social TV, tCommerce, 3D, Augmented Reality, Marketing, Design, Applications, Mobile, Open Source

Augmented Reality is on the rise, this means also creating business models which are profitable and sustainable for the Augmented Reality industry.

An extended and interesting attempt to do so, is written and visualized in the 16 Augmented Reality Business Models by Gary Hayes.

17 fields of Augmented Reality Applications | Agora Media Group Blog - Travel Industry, Social TV, tCommerce, 3D, Augmented Reality, Marketing, Design, Applications, Mobile, Open Source

Due to increasing interest in Augmented Reality, the creative question rises where Augmented Reality can benefit the user?
Theoretically, all is ‘reality’ and all can be augmented with meta-data, but what are the fields that will benefit most?
If one reads the articles and watches the videos on Youtube, one cannot deny the futurisic and science fictional touch that Augmented Reality brings along and fires up creativity and innovativity.

In this article we set out a list of Augmented Reality applications which in some cases are already prototyped, investigated or in use.

FLARManager: Augmented Reality in Flash | transmote speaks...

FLARManager is a lightweight framework that makes building augmented reality applications in Flash (using FLARToolkit) easier. it is compatible with a variety of 3D engines (currently: Alternativa3D, Away3D, Papervision3D, and Sandy3D), and provides a more robust event-based system for managing marker addition, update, and removal. it supports detection and management of multiple patterns, and multiple markers of a given pattern.

IndieGames.com - The Weblog - Sniff: Public Interactive Dog Installation

Here's an interesting application made with the Unity3D game engine: an interactive projection of a dog on a storefront window, complete with proper behavioral responses. (video has no sound)

If your gestures and body language are interpreted as friendly, the dog will respond to you the same way as well. Same goes with a show of aggresion towards the dog. The sidewalk is illuminated with infrared lights, and tracking is done with an infrared-sensitive camera.

Designing Highly Reliable Fiducial Markers (ARTag's Mark Fiala)

Fiducial Markers are artificial landmarks added to a scene to facilitate locating point correspondences between images, or between images and a known model. Reliable fiducials solve the interest point detection and matching problems when adding markers is convenient. The proper design of fiducials and the associated computer vision algorithms to detect them can enable accurate pose detection for applications ranging from augmented reality, input devices for HCI, to robot navigation. Marker systems typically have two stages, hypothesis generation from unique image features and verification/identification. A set of criteria for high robustness and practical use are identified, and then optimized to produce the ARTag fiducial marker system. An edge-based method robust to lighting and partial occlusion is used for the hypothesis stage, and a reliable digital coding system is used for the identification and verification stage. Using these design criteria large gains in performance are achieved by ARTag over conventional ad hoc designs.

!!! Bokode: Imperceptible Visual Tags for Camera Based Interaction from a Distance

We show a new camera based interaction solution where an ordinary camera can detect small optical tags from a relatively large distance. Current optical tags, such as barcodes, must be read within a short range and the codes occupy valuable physical space on products. We present a new low-cost optical design so that the tags can be shrunk to 3mm visible diameter, and unmodified ordinary cameras several meters away can be set up to decode the identity plus the relative distance and angle. The design exploits the bokeh effect of ordinary cameras lenses, which maps rays exiting from an out of focus scene point into a disk like blur on the camera senso

BBC - BBC Internet Blog: Wombile, the fantasy game for mobile

We came up with Faebl, a fantasy game for mobile phones with GPS receivers that you play in the real world. To make it work we chose to write our own platform for multi-player mobile games, and called it Wombile. (Blame the names on the difficulty of finding short words that are easy to pronounce and still available as a ".com" domain!)

For a simple game written in just a few days, Faebl was surprisingly fun to play. Players who downloaded the software to a compatible phone were thrown into a fantasy battle taking place in the real world. If they were physically near another player, they'd be given the opportunity to fight them. If the other player didn't want to be attacked, they had to physically run away. Different weapons made different noises (played through the phones' speakers), and defending players had to pick an appropriate weapon to defend with based on the sound they heard.

ProjectDepthPerceptionMedicalAR

In-situ visualization in medical augmented reality (AR) using for instance a video see-through head mounted display (HMD) and an optical tracking system enables the stereoscopic view on visualized CT data registered with the real anatomy of a patient. Data can aligned with the required accuracy and the surgeons do not have to analyze data on an external monitor or images attached to the wall somewhere in the operating room. Thanks to a medical AR system like mentioned before, surgeons get a direct view onto and also ”into” the patient. Mental registration of medical imagery with the operation site is not necessary anymore. In addition surgical instruments can be augmented inside the human body. Bringing medical imagery and surgical instruments in the same field of action provides the most intuitive way to understand the patient’s anatomy within the region of interest and allows for the development of completely new generations of surgical navigation systems.
