Above their station

In-train announcements on East Midlands Trains have a new word for stations: they’re now “calling points”. This is even sillier than the silliness it replaces: “station stops”.

Why your nails are having a growth spurt

The speed of finger and toenail growth has surged by nearly a quarter over the past 70 years, a new study has revealed. And the modern diet – rich in protein from readily available fish, meat, eggs and poultry – may be behind the spurt.

Obama still isn’t president in the south

Denying the leader’s American birth is just another form of racism. A black man is president and a large majority of white southerners cannot accept that, even in 2009

Harriet Harman is either thick or criminally disingenuous

The reason we should have disquiet about Harriet is because she is either thick or criminally disingenuous. My guess is thick. Being a bit thick should not disqualify someone from leading their party, I suppose, as both Iain Duncan Smith and Lord Salisbury would concur. But the problem with Harman is that this is stupidity repackaged as a form of jejune radicalism and as a consequence nobody in her party will gainsay it, for fear of being branded a reactionary.

Top 10 Political Blogging Tricks at Charlotte Gore

#7a (Bonus): The fast track to internet fame, if your trolling isn’t working out as well as you hope, is to pick a fight with Tim Ireland. You won’t regret it. As much free publicity as you can possibly handle is yours, assuming you find the right combination of words to incur Tim’s wrath. A little bit of research is all it takes to discover the buttons to push. It doesn’t have to be Tim, of course - the trick is to find a blogger that cares what complete strangers think, unload your opinion in their face then wait for steam to come out of their ears.

Ecotowns and turbines are a political slap in the face of the landscape

Climate change is like defence during the cold war, enveloped in hysteria of fear, envy, class, greed, commercial interest and intellectual chicanery. As big anti-carbon replaces big carbon in the lobbying stakes, statistics become gibberish, millions become billions and megawatts become gigawatts submerged in tonnes of CO2.

Bernie Ecclestone is the latest victim of the new McCarthyites

Due to the pervasive influence of political correctness, the efforts of vociferous single-issue lobbies and pressure groups and the passing of illiberal laws which infringe freedom of speech - such as the Racial and Religious Hatred Act of 2006, we are fast approaching the stage when only views within the officially approved parameters can be voiced without fear of comeback. And the parameters are getting smaller and smaller.

Man died of heart attack while paramedic conducted risk assessment

A grandfather died of a heart attack while an emergency paramedic stood outside his home for 16 minutes, making a risk assessment. A paramedic who arrived within six minutes and saw the door open feared that the property was being burgled. He stayed on the doorstep carrying out a “risk assessment exercise” before calling police for support. When he entered the property, 16 minutes after arriving, and found Mr Adams in the front room of his home in Morden, South London, he was not breathing. Mr Adams was dead by the time he reached hospital.

In the fog, remember: victory is impossible in Afghanistan

It’s important not to understand. It’s important not to learn. In the total buggeration into which the world’s help for Afghanistan has now descended, it’s important not to know too much. Accept that somebody some day may understand, but it isn’t going to be you. Somebody some day may grab the Gordian knot and cut it, but it isn’t going to be us. Know only that. To know more is to know less.

Opera 'is music for the heart'

Listening to the right kind of music can slow the heart and lower blood pressure, a study has revealed. Rousing operatic music, like Puccini's Nessun Dorma, full of crescendos and diminuendos is best and could help stroke rehabilitation, say the authors. Music is already used holistically at the bedside in many hospitals. Not only is it cheap and easy to administer, music has discernible physical effects on the body as well as mood, Circulation journal reports. Music with a faster tempo increases breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, while slower-pace music does the reverse. MrP: You don't say! Jeez)

Detroit Police Underreport Homicides

A Detroit News review of police and medical examiner records found that the Detroit police department is “systematically undercounting homicides.” Detroit police routinely reclassify homicides as justifiable, or deaths by suicide, or accident in annual reports to the FBI, and by doing so, the department has falsely lowered the city’s homicide rate, the paper found. If Detroit police had not incorrectly reclassified 22 slayings last year, the city would have had the worst homicide rate of U.S. cities with more than 500,000 residents, according to the Detroit News.
