  • We would do well to adopt (Deborah) Meier's Mandate: No student should be expected to meet an academic requirement   that a cross section of successful adults in the community cannot.
  • (In the same spirit, I propose Kohn's Corollary to Meier's   Mandate: All persons given to pious rhetoric about the need to   "raise standards" and produce "world-class academic performance for   the 21st century" not only should be required to take these exams   themselves but must agree to have their scores published in the   newspaper.)

  • For that reason, I think of Kohn as the honeyguide of education. The honeyguide is a bird that leads humans to bee colonies. Once the human has opened the hive and taken the honey, the bird feeds on the wax and larvae that remain behind. So it is with Kohn. He will lead you to something interesting and useful, but if you want to use it, you will have to do the work yourself.

  • How can we rid our schools of those  who refuse to be team players?  Well, we can insist that all classroom  instruction be rigorously aligned to state standards – a very effective  technique since most of those standards documents were drafted by people steeped  in the models, methods, and metaphors of corporations.
  • The final distinguishing feature of education that’s geared  to the next century is its worshipful attitude toward mathematics and  technology.  “If you can’t quantify it or plug it in, who needs it?”
