‘Censuses’ in between the censuses

This column previously addressed the importance of the 1870 U. S. census in African-American research. As noted in that article, this was the first federal census after the end of the Civil War, and therefore the first record group to record personal information about former slaves nationwide. It was not, however, the earliest record group to do so in many localities. Many similar record groups were created that provide information about former slaves between 1865 and 1870.

The Red River Sankofa Project

The Red River Sankofa Project is committed to connecting and honoring our ancestral ties to NW Louisiana and NE Texas by focusing on burial ground preservation. This rather remote, but bountiful area along the upper Red River of Louisiana and along the Texas Louisiana border has long been forgotten in historical text therefore we are dedicated towards sharing the rich stories and contributions of our African American ancestors who settled the area. Please explore the site and if you would like to contribute stories, history, pictures, cemetery transcriptions and any other record that would tie your ancestor(s) to the area, feel free to send them to info@redriversankofa.org.

Pre-Bureau Records and Civil War African American Genealogy

Researchers typically use the records of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (commonly referred to as the "Freedmen's Bureau") to study either individuals or African-American communities during Reconstruction. Some records predate the establishment of the Freedmen's Bureau on March 3, 1865. In fact, many of the relief programs carried out by the Bureau have their roots in the "pre-Bureau." Pre-Bureau is a modern term used to refer to the military's efforts to address the needs of the wartime African American refugee community.

Socialtext | Social Networking with Enterprise 2.0 Collaboration

Socialtext was founded on the vision that technologies emerging in the consumer web offered far better social dynamics than any enterprise software. The opportunity we saw was to create a new social context for organizations and the people who make up those organizations. So we set out to adapt for enterprise use what is now called Web 2.0. In the turbulent times of 2001, Socialtext emerged the company that founded Enterprise 2.0.

Crisis at Fort Sumter

Crisis at Fort Sumter is an interactive historical simulation and decision making program. Using text, images, and sound, it reconstructs the dilemmas of policy formation and decision making in the period between Abraham Lincoln's election in November 1860 and the battle of Fort Sumter in April 1861. The program primarily focuses on Lincoln, both as President-elect and as President. You will place yourself in Lincoln's position, consider the events that transpire, and choose a course of action at five critical junctures, called "problems." At each of these five junctures, Lincoln made a decision that helped determine the outcome of the crisis at Fort Sumter. In order to assess each problem and make a decision, advice is available from official advisors, such as cabinet members, and from various informal channels, such as newspapers, friends, and public spokesmen. You must, therefore, assess information, calculate the consequences of various options, determine a course of action, and evaluate your decision, just as Lincoln did during the winter and spring of 1860-1861. While Crisis at Fort Sumter focuses on Lincoln and his administration, it also provides relevant information about events in the Confederacy. This information is placed alongside a Stars and Bars icon to distinguish it from events taking place elsewhere.
