[pdf] Howard Rheingold on Future Fundamental literacies

My experiences have convinced me that the most
important focus for public attention right now should shift to the literacies that bring
power to those who possess them and leave behind those who don't know how to use
their telephone as a medical instrument, educational medium, social radar, political
organizing tool.

"Street Crawl" Gallery (York Media AQ Project)

This is a selection of images taken with a 1.3 megapixel cell phone camera for a professional development media teaching course I'm taking. The object was to collect media of a specific location. We were assigned to Church street, which is the heart of Toronto's gay community and other urban locations.

  • The purpose of this project was to document a public location using only the technology we have access to. Since my good camera is out of commission, I used my cell phone (which has very limited image capability). Despite my "low tech" gear, I managed to get some decent pictures - mostly due to techniques (cropping and moving the camera to eliminate need for focus) and some minor tweeks in Irfanview, changing colour to B&W and pushing up the contrast. Most of our time was spent walking down Church street which is the heart of Toronto's gay community - thus all the LGBTQ content. We ended our walk in China town - unfortunately only two images (we were tired and it was cold!) - melmcbride on 2009-10-18

Encouraging Students' Intrinsic Motivation

  • Knowing
what background your students bring to class and starting the course at an
appropriate level can increase students' success and, thus, positive feelings
they have about your subject matter. I have found the use of non-graded pre-
and post- tests to be a useful strategy for obtaining such information. In
addition, giving a post-test and showing students how much they have learned
(the difference in their pre- and post-test scores) is, even without a grade,
    rewarding to many students.
  • Find out what interests
your students and use that information in class examples and assignments.
Negotiate guidelines or norms for meaningful but appropriate classroom discussion.
Think about how your course could impact your students' future lives.

Neurodiversity and the "dumbest" generation | brianfrank.ca

My feeling is that if our society considers honesty and interpretive precision to be flaws, then it’s our society itself that’s in need of therapy.

    • These comments on Aspergers are currently being questioned. Whether Aspies are or are not "impaired" may have more to do with the methodologies than their genuine abilities. Even the language here is questionable and reinforcing (impairment) of disability versus difference. - on 2009-09-01

  • But then as soon as I read that I thought of Tyler Cowen’s Create Your Own Economy, in which he makes a case that new technologies and practices on the web — precisely the ones Bauerlein has criticized — are empowering autistic and  neurodiverse individuals to be more social and productive.
