History of the Dividing Line
full text of William Byrd's 1728 text

Journal of the Line between Virginia and North Carolina
-
The only Distinction, in those early Days, was, that all the Coast to the Southward of Chesapeake Bay was called South Virginia, and all to the Northward of it, North Virginia.
The first Settlement of this fine Country was owing to that great Ornament of the British Nation, Sir Walter Raleigh, who obtained a Grant thereof from Queen Elizabeth of ever-glorious Memory, by Letters Patent, dated March the 25th, 1584. - 14 more annotations...

The Organisation Strikes Back: Rhetorical Empowerment Strategies in 1950s Business Representations of White-Collar Manhood
Not as useful as I first thought, but still worth reading.
Norman Mailer, Towering Writer With Matching Ego, Dies at 84 - New York Times
Maybe useful for background info, bibliography
The White Man Unburdened - The New York Review of Books
-
And there were other factors for using our military skills, minor but significant: these reasons return us to the ongoing malaise of the white American male. He had been taking a daily drubbing over the last thirty years. For better or worse, the women's movement has had its breakthrough successes and the old, easy white male ego has withered in the glare.

There he was for the photo-op looking like one more great guy among the great guys. Let us hope that our democracy will survive these nonstop foulings of the nest.
ProQuest Document View - The Shelleys and empire: 'Prometheus Unbound', 'Frankenstein', 'A Philosophical View of Reform', and the modern African fictions of liberation (Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley, Chinua Achebe, Nigeria, Ayi Kwei Armah, Ghana)
Dissertation - probably worth looking at if possible
David Bromwich - Love Against Revenge in Shelley's Prometheus - Philosophy and Literature 26:2
Don't know if this is useful yet.
-
Shelley was a member of the first generation to accept the French
Revolution as an accomplished change in the world. -
in Prometheus Unbound above all, Shelley
was looking at revolution from the point of view of a creator no longer
interested in contest, a creator who is not a light-bringer. That is
why Prometheus is not the hero of the work that bears his name. He is
the name of a mental power that creates a possibility of action in others. - 15 more annotations...
George E. Boulukos - Maria Edgeworth's "Grateful Negro" and the Sentimental Argument for Slavery - Eighteenth-Century Life 23:1
-
"granting
it to be physically impossible that the world should exist without rum,
sugar, and indigo, why could they not be produced by freemen as well as
slaves?" -
Despite the recurrent scholarly claim that sentimental
sympathy was a driving force behind antislavery, Edgeworth was one of
many writers to take the sentimental acknowledgment of slaves' humanity
only as the ground for understanding them as psychological beings, to
be managed and manipulated like any other worker. - 13 more annotations...
From quigley the writer to murphy the job seeker: Beckett's evolving vision of characters and plots in Murphy - English Studies
-
The dilemma facing Beckett is a thorny one, and the way he managed to get out of it is, I think, by producing a novel containing a mixture of conventionality (language and narrative structure) and unconventionality (narrative fissures and cracks, plus Murphy as a subversive idealist), and of compromise and resistance to compromise.
