The Ships that carried them made a Shift to find a more direct way to Virginia, and ventured thro the Capes into the Bay of Chesapeak. The same Night they came to an Anchor at the Mouth of Powatan, the same as James River, where they built a Small Fort at a Place call'd Point Comfort.

This Settlement stood its ground from that time forward in spite of all the Blunders and Disagreement of the first Adventurers, and the many Calamitys that befel the Colony afterwards.

The six gentlemen who were first named of the company by the crown, and who were empowered to choose an annual President from among themselves, were always engaged in Factions and Quarrels, while the rest detested Work more than Famine. At this rate the Colony must have come to nothing, had it not been for the vigilance and Bravery of Capt. Smith, who struck a Terrour into all the Indians round about.

They had now made peace with the Indians, but there was one thing wanting to make that peace lasting. The Natives coud, by no means, perswade themselves that the English were heartily their Friends, so long as they disdained to intermarry with them. And, in earnest, had the English consulted their own Security and the good of the Colony -- Had they intended either to Civilize or Convert these Gentiles, they would have brought their Stomachs to embrace this prudent Alliance.

The Indians are generally tall and well-proportion'd, which may make full Amends for the Darkness of their Complexions. Add to this, that they are healthy & Strong, with Constitutions untainted by Lewdness, and not enfeebled by Luxury. Besides, Morals and all considered, I cant think the Indians were much greater Heathens than the first Adventurers, who, had they been good Christians, would have had the Charity to take this only method of converting the Natives to Christianity. For, after all that can be said, a sprightly Lover is the most prevailing Missionary that can be sent amongst these, or any other Infidels.

Besides, the poor Indians would have had less reason to Complain that the English took away their Land, if they had received it by way of Portion with their Daughters. Had such Affinities been contracted in the Beginning, how much Bloodshed had been prevented, and how populous would the Country have been, and, consequently, how considerable? Nor wou'd the Shade of the Skin have been any reproach at this day; for if a Moor may be washt white in 3 Generations, Surely an Indian might have been blancht in two.

They coasted the N E Side of the Dismal for several miles together, and found all the Grounds bordering upon it very full of Sloughs. The Trees that grew near it lookt very Reverend, with the long Moss that hung dangling from their Branches. Both cattle and Horses eat this Moss greedily in Winter when other Provender is Scarce, tho it is apt to scowr them at first. In that moist Soil too grew abundance of that kind of Myrtle which bears the Candle-Berries. There was likewise, here and there, a Gall-bush, which is a beautiful Evergreen, and may be cut into any Shape. It derives its name from its Berries turning Water black, like the Galls of an oak.

When this Shrub is transplanted into Gardens, it will not thrive without frequent watering.

I argue that Shelley's Prometheus becomes a possible example of
reform—the agent of a revolution so far beyond political upheaval
as to deserve a different name—by passing from self-pity to
love.

This recollection of Prometheus is enough to dispatch Asia on the quest
that takes her to the cave of Demogorgon. There she will pose a riddle
to which the answer has already been given by her presence—the
answer to Fate, Time, Occasion, Chance, and Change—that to them
"All things are subject but eternal Love." Literally, Asia's question to
Demogorgon regards the term of Jupiter's reign: "When shall the destined
hour arrive?" So far, it is an echo of her question about the coming of
Panthea with the dream of Prometheus: "This is the season, this the day,
the hour." And Demogorgon's answer is as ostensive as that of Panthea
when she allows the dream to be read by Asia through her eyes. He will
simply say: "Behold!"—an imperative that is also a metaphor,
whose true vehicle appears in Asia's song,

In fact, throughout the eighteenth century, representations of
slave gratitude consistently, if unwittingly, show that slavery depends
on systematic brutality even as they celebrate the "humane masters" who
benefit from it. This is the case, for example, in both Daniel Defoe's
novel Colonel Jack (1722) and Sarah Scott's History of Sir
George Ellison (1766).

Defoe's Colonel Jack generates gratitude himself by threatening to
whip a slave to death and then granting a conditional pardon; Scott's
Ellison is "humane" himself but disciplines slaves by threatening
to sell them to crueler masters. Similarly, in "The Grateful Negro,"
only as long as slaves remember and fear brutal overseers like Durant
would they be grateful to "humane" masters like Mr. Edwards. Thus, the
sentimental relationships between individual masters and slaves depend
on systematic violence.
