Article: Learning to Write with a Sledgehammer by Alan Alda

  • .
"I can do it...! I can do it!" I chanted, as I jumped around the room
  • I've written five movies, many episodes of television and two
books, but that moment in the hotel room always comes back to me. It was
the first time since I was a child and had set my sights on being a writer
that I had the feeling I could actually do it.

Inspiration on Demand: Create a Swipe File | Write to Done

  • Your swipe file is personal and should contain anything that moves or inspires you. Whenever you need ideas for your writing simply sit back in a comfortable chair, make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, and peruse through your swipe file, fully expecting to be inspired. Look through your swipe file at night right before going to bed so that the words and images can marinate in your mind as you sleep. In the morning when you awaken and apply yourself to your task the ideas will explode like multicolored fireworks in the inner recesses of your mind.

Say Hello to Your Inner Critic and Write Faster

If you're going to write several thousand words a day, you need to figure out how to live with your critic. I'm not going to tell you to defeat it because I believe that's impossible. It might go away for awhile but it's going to come back some day when you least expect it.

In my case, I take a deep breath and push forward with the work at hand. If it isn't flowing, I write about the fact that it isn't flowing. I just type. Eventually, my hands find their way again and I slip back into the creative state.

  • By the way, my inner critic was right about one thing - no one else is dreaming like I am. Only I dream the dreams that I have, just as you dream your dreams. As writers, it is our duty to turn those dreams into stories we can share.

Connect with Your Creative Writer | ThinkSimpleNow.com

  • When we are working in that creative space, we are experiencing flow. We feel happy, content, and passionate. Time just flies. Think of the last time you were deeply in joy with writing, creating something or deeply immersed in a project. What did that feel like?
  • Creativity is something that can be cultivated. We are born with access to the creative space, some of us may be more in-tuned to it, but it is never too late to get in touch with that side of ourselves.
