Real or Imaginary: The effectiveness of using personas in product design
The principle aim of this pilot study was to assess whether using personas as a design tool in the product development process would lead to more user-centred designs. It can be justifiably claimed at the outset that there are positive benefits associated with using the technique and this claim is evident from the analysis of the student design work, the student survey and the focus group feedback from the students and their tutors.

User Experience Design
Through these ten tempestuous years, I've found the infamous three circle diagram to be a great tool for explaining how and why we must strike a unique balance on each project between business goals and context, user needs and behavior, and the available mix of content.
design by committee vs design by community (things we learned from the Drupal.org project)
Many of us have suffered design by committee, which is really it's own special circle of hell, in which a group of somewhere between 3-12 (usually) stakeholders with various levels of authority (actual or effective) provide copious and detailed feedback to your designs - feedback that often conflicts either with itself, or with the objectives of the project, or just with the principles of good design.
Eye-tracking studies: more than meets the eye
Based on eye-tracking studies, we know that people tend to scan the search results in order. They start from the first result and continue down the list until they find a result they consider helpful and click it — or until they decide to refine their query.
The Site Map: An Information Architecture Cop-Out
Spending those constrained resources on the symptoms only delays the inevitable. A design cop-out usually needs continual updating, whereas fixing the root problem can nip it in the bud and release long-term resources.

Don Norman's jnd.org / user advocacy and human-centered design
I argue in favor of complexity, against the simple-minded notion that things should be simple. Simplicity is boring. We want richness and depth in our lives. Moreover, the world and our activities are inherently complex, so the tools we use must match that complexity. Arguments against compexity are misplaced, i argue (see my essay "Simplicity is not the answer.") We don't want confusion, perplexity, and confusion. Thatis, we want our complex tools and activities to be understandable.

When attempting to answer the third question, I use a framework I discovered early in my career: The Five Competencies of User Experience Design. This framework comprises the competencies a UX professional or team requires. The following sections describe these five competencies, outline some questions each competency must answer, and show the groundwork and deliverables for which each competency is responsible.
