MIT adopts a university-wide Open Access mandate
The Provost's Office will make the scholarly article available to the public in an open- access repository. The Office of the Provost, in consultation with the Faculty Committee on the Library System will be responsible for interpreting this policy, resolving disputes concerning its interpretation and application, and recommending changes to the Faculty.
Google Collaborates on Moodle Integration
Through the integration, users loaded into Moodle will be automatically loaded into Google Apps Education Edition, "providing users with Web-based e-mail, document authoring, spreadsheets, presentations and sites, all integrated with their online learning platform," explained Moodlerooms' West Coast Managing Director Michael Penney.
Accidental Openness
I am seeing a day rapidly approaching where many of the major Institutions provide platforms that empower open content and scholarly activity … a place where the next LMS/CMS is simply a browser, a social bookmarking toolset, and perhaps a social recommendation space (like Times People). Imagine how amazing it will be when the best content is published in the open where debate, conversations, and discourse happens at the micro and macro level.

I've been Technology Director for MIT OpenCourseWare since our pilot site was launched in Fall 2002. My job is to ensure that the OCW publishing team at MIT has the technical infrastructure and tools it needs to collect, edit and publish OCW content to the world. I also get involved in projects involving the interface of OCW technology with other MIT infrastructure such as DSpace, MIT's digital archive. I've been around MIT off and on since I was a student in the 1970s. Prior to OCW I was VP, Operations at a small Internet company that I co-founded in 1996. During the 1980s and early 90s I worked for MIT's central IT organization in a variety of roles.

New EDUCAUSE Constituent Group on Openness
A new EDUCAUSE Constituent Group has formed discussing Openness and is now open. From critical IT services to educational content, distributed models based on openness are challenging higher education's traditional approaches. The Openness Constituent Group focuses on the emergence and adoption of open technologies, practices, policies, and initiatives, and how they affect the delivery and support of education. Topics include but are not limited to free and open source software, open content, open educational resources, open courseware, open standards, and management practices such as open business and enterprise 2.0.
Kluging: An LMS Alternative
Currently I avoid, as much as I can, LMSs. Instead I kluge together a loose collection of free web applications, (Eduspaces Community blog, PBwiki, Pageflakes, Audacity, a password-protected mark site, and whatever free file-hosting service my current students recommend.) It’s a bit more work than using a LMS but I believe this approach, the kluging together of a selection of free web services, is a richer and more productive teaching practice.

Building on the worldwide momentum toward Open Access to publicly funded research, Open Access Day will create a key opportunity for the higher education community and the general public to understand more clearly the opportunities of wider access and use of content.
Why Universities Shouldn't Create "Something like YouTube"
So, I don't know for sure what the next stage of an academic content system looks like but my own sense is that it should look MORE like YouTube and less like what university lawyers and department heads think will be "something like YouTube".
