Why use a CMS?
"Is it possible to conduct an effective online program without a centrally administered course management system?"
Blackboard: the road ahead?
"The purpose of the meeting was to explore new directions - features that might be available in future versions: 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and finally 10.0."
LMS 3.0
"Proprietary course management systems are heading for a brick wall. The combination of economic pressures combined with saturated markets and the maturing stage of the life cycle of these once innovative platforms means that 2009 may well be the year of change or a year of serious planning for change. "
Sakai, Blackboard and Moodle session at EDUCAUSE
"The interest in the session shows that a large proportion of universities are thinking about what system will best meet their needs."
How course management systems impact teaching
Course management systems, like any other technology, have an inherent purpose implied in their design, and therefore a built–in pedagogy. Although these pedagogies are based on instructivist principles, today’s large CMSs have many features suitable for applying more constructivist pedagogies.
Blackboard’s Response to Open Source: Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt
"As I noted recently, the University of North Carolina (a Blackboard customer) reported highly favorable results of their pilot study of Sakai, with an outcome of further investigation into Sakai as a full replacement of Blackboard as their primary LMS. It turns out that this was following on the heels of a similar study done by the North Carolina Community College system favorably comparing Moodle to Blackboard."
The State of the LMS: An Institutional Perspective
This is not one of those predict-the-demise or predict-the-next-flux-capacitor presentations, though. It’s just an excellent, down-to-earth institutional view of how LMS adoption is going in the real world and what the challenges are, especially for large university consortia.
Emergency Preparedness Preparation
In the event of a pandemic (or other) emergency that closes the Unviersity for an ongoing period of time, you will most likely want to communicate with your students and make content available to them in fairly short order. Below are some suggested resources for getting started in that process.
Federal Circuit Rules in Favor of Desire2Learn Across the Board
We are pleased to announce that the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has ruled on the appeals that resulted from the trial in Texas. The Federal Circuit has ruled in favor of Desire2Learn across the board and confirmed that all 38 patent claims asserted by Blackboard are invalid.
Why Sakai Now
Unlike any other proprietary or open source learning platform, only Sakai provides structured, open and transparent community and governance, powered by a substantial and growing number of institutions of every shape and size from around the world, coordinated by a formal, nonprofit entity, and including a strong and varied commercial ecosystem. We call this combination "community source" and it is open source, only much more.
LMS Evaluation Committee - Final 2009 Report and Recommendation
Recommends, on the basis of that evaluation, that the University adopt Moodle as its sole Learning Management System.
Blackboard Upgrade: Summer 2009
During the outage period https://blackboard.unc.edu will be completely unavailable. If any Bb materials will be needed during the outage period, these materials must be downloaded or extracted prior to the outage. After extracting the content, it can be made available to students using the Course Web Space tool.
A Critical Examination of Blackboard's e-Learning Environment
Blackboard’s e–learning system dominates the online learning software market. In this essay I critically examine the structure of Blackboard’s two online learning delivery systems, Blackboard 8.0 and Blackboard CE6. I identify ways in which the platforms both constrain and facilitate instructor–student and student–student interaction. I addition, I delineate features that sustain and challenge traditional power relationships in the classroom. I conclude with implications for online pedagogy and practical applications for instructors and students.
Blackboard's Commitment to Standards
Publishers, institutions, instructional designers, faculty, all are creating great learning content, at no small investment in time and resource. They want to create content once, have it be able to play anywhere, and preserve their investment by making sure it’s not “locked in” to a particular vendor’s system due to proprietary formats. Common Cartridge emerged to address these goals. I’m thrilled to have us get more involved, and also to get more personally connected with our ongoing support of other important standards like LTI, SCORM, LIS and SIF.

I don't understand where to go for more information about the software, what it does, what it's capable of ... It's strange. I'm a bright person but before I can even find out whether the thing I might be interested in is worth further effort, I have to wade through a series of communication channels, none of which are what I'm accustomed to.
Cheers to Sakai: New course Web site is a good alternative to Blackboard
Unlike Blackboard, Sakai allows professors and students to customize features in a way that best suits their needs.
