Tape destruction. Extreme analog effects from damaged audio cassettes.

"Damaging and destroying your cassettes will greatly increase all of the wonderful characteristics that tape already offers such as: wow and flutter (a kind of garbling sound from speed changes from the stretched and wrinkled tape), distortion, dropouts (big time - and oh, so unpredictable) from the magnetized particles loosened, loss of frequency (variable - depending on the amount of damage) mostly in the high end, loss of volume (related to dropouts except that it lasts for much longer), a lovely 'crunch', and more freaky stuff! Because of the unpredictable and random nature of damaging a physical medium (tape) it's probably impossible to accurately "model" these effects using digital means (DSP)."

The Effect of Country Music on Suicide

"Country music is hypothesized to nurture a suicidal mood through its concerns with
problems common in the suicidal population, such as marital discord, alcohol abuse, and
alienation from work. The results of a multiple regression analysis of 49 metropolitan
areas show that the greater the airtime devoted to country music, the greater the white
suicide rate. The effect is independent of divorce, southernness, poverty, and gun
availability. The existence of a country music subculture is thought to reinforce the link
between country music and suicide."

Guitars down, comrades: rock stars launch union to stand up for their rights | Music | The Guardian

The organisation will "speak with one voice to help artists strike a new bargain with record companies, digital distributors and others ... by engaging with government, music and technology companies, and collection societies, arguing for fair play and, where necessary, exposing unfair practices". The industry has been revolutionised since Napster sparked panic by bringing illegal file sharing to a mass audience 10 years ago; CD sales have collapsed and digital downloads have soared, but they have failed to make up the gap.

nodal - generative software application for composing music

Nodal is a generative software application for composing music. It uses a novel method for the notation and playing of MIDI based music. This method is based around the concept of a user-defined graph. The graph consists of nodes (musical events) and edges (connections between events). You interactively define the graph, which is then traversed by any number of players who play the musical events as they encounter them on the graph. The time taken to travel from one node to another is based on the length of the edges that connect the nodes.

Rickrolling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rickrolling is an Internet meme involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song "Never Gonna Give You Up". The meme is a bait and switch: a person provides a Web link they claim is relevant to the topic at hand, but the link actually takes the user to the Astley video. The URL can be masked or obfuscated in some manner so that the user cannot determine the true source of the link without clicking (and thus satisfying their curiosity). When a person clicks on the link given and is led to the web page he/she is said to have been "Rickrolled". By extension, it can also mean playing the song loudly in public in order to be disruptive.

Hand and Touch Gesture Controllers using Fiber, Fabric and Malleable Materials | CNMAT

New materials like conductive thread, piezoresistive textiles and carbon fiber make it possible to build compelling
new gesture and musical instrument controllers in minutes and hours. This document showcases some ideas using these new materials. The most frequently asked question at my Maker Faire presentation of these was: where do I get the fabrics? The conductive fabrics and plastic (velostat) can be found at the retailer http://www.lessemf.com. Some of the silver fabrics and zippers can be bought from http://www.shieldextrading.net/. The pressure sensitive fabric is made by http://www.eeonyx.com. The conductive paper is retailed by http://www.pasco.com. The next most frequently asked question was: Where can I learn to do that? One good way is to come to my sensor workshop which is open to the public and taught during the third week of July. Oops. The workshop is full this year. Contact me for other opportunities to learn.

Words and chords. The semantic shifts of the Beatles' chords

Every typical Beatles' song has at least one rather unconventional chord progression. Often there are more and sometimes the chord sequences even come close to endangering the songs' musical comprehensibility. There is, however, some kind of harmonic structure beneath these remarkable chord progressions, preventing this to happen. In the Beatles' songs each of the basic chords can be replaced by several other types of chords. Separated by minor third intervals, the tones of these stand-in chords show a diagonal relationship. This principle of diagonal substitution helps the listeners to understand the songs musically. Closer study of the early Beatles' songs reveals yet another point of support. In each song there is a tight relation between the clusters of these stand-in chords and the semantics of the lyrics. As the meaning of the words in a song does shift along two dimensions, the chords will shift along the same lines. This correlation between words and chords offers a flexible way to shift emotional meanings in conversational contexts.
