Free Software provides a radical form of openness which is, perhaps, a very American way of constituting a public (suspicious of the state and corporations, obsessed with ideas of balance and fairness, and a weird mix of individualism and populism). The question I think it raises is whether, as a politics it has a content. Free Software as it exists has an insanely refined focus on form over political content (and this is the source of the suspicion about the dominance
of the technical). But the question is: is this focus on form itself a particular kind of political content? At some level yes, but it is one that is open to, and maybe even encourages people to challenge it. It is a way of saying: if this is a (for instance) "libertarian" form, it is one that you are allowed to change--so make it less libertarian if you believe that will make it better. It says nothing, however, about whether people will have the power to do that, which is its weakest feature, its inability to incorporate the concrete fact that history has led us to this point.

Tako bi, prema IDC Studiji o gospodarskim učincima softverskog piratstva, smanjenjem stope softverskog piratstva za samo 10% Hrvatska do 2009. otvorila više od tisuću novih radnih mjesta u IT sektoru, te bi se nacionalnom gospodarstvu donijelo dodatnih 247 milijuna američkih dolara. Osim toga, prihodi nacionalne industrije povećali bi se za više od 150 milijuna američkih dolara, te bi se ostvarilo dodatnih 63 milijuna USD poreznih prihoda. Općenito, utjecaj intelektualnog vlasništva na gospodarstvo iznimno je velik, što potvrđuje Studija o ekonomskom doprinosu djelatnosti temeljenih na autorskom pravu u gospodarstvu Hrvatske koju je lani objavio Državni zavod za intelektualno vlasništvo, a iz koje je vidljivo da industrije koje svoje poslovanje temelje na autorskim pravima ostvaruju veći prihod u iznosu od 4,42% BDP-a od svih hotela i restorana koji ostvaruju 3,61 posto BDP-a.

Or you know, how men somehow always got those jobs performing in orchestras, because they "played better", until someone came up with the blind audition, at which point the proportion of women getting positions jumped dramatically.
There are boatloads of studies demonstrating that holding all else equal, men are chosen preferentially over women even today. Hence the common belief that a woman has to be twice as good at something before she'll get as much credit as the half as competent man.
It isn't whining to point out that maleness is a huge automatic plus when it comes to people assessing other people's work. It is whining to complain when that fact gets pointed out.
