Cubicle Muses - Wave's Web of Protocols

"Google Waves uses XMPP only for server to server federation. Joe Gregorio has a good overview of the actual APIs and protocols used in Wave, but I still found it easier to create a diagram. I’m actually concerned about the different protocols and the fact that only the XMPP federation protocol is documented. The other two protocols: the json-rpc robot protocol and the GWT generated client-server protocol have no documentation. Moreover, the protocols are generated rpc protocols and make heavy use of serialized data."

Eric Schmidt wishes Google could save newspapers - Jan. 7, 2009

The fundamental question you're asking is why does Google not write large checks to newspapers? We're careful at Google with our money. We write large checks when we have a great strategy. And we don't yet have that strategy.

Beta.BookLamp.org

BookLamp.org is a system for matching readers to books through an analysis of writing styles, similar to the way that Pandora.com matches music lovers to new music. Do you like Stephen King’s It, but thought it was too long? The technology behind BookLamp allows you to find books that are written with a similar tone, tense, perspective, action level, description level, and dialog level, while at the same time allowing you to specify details like... half the length. It’s impervious to outside influences - like advertising - that impact socially driven recommendation systems, and isn’t reliant on a large user base to work.

Verizon Wireless To Introduce ‘Any Apps, Any Device’ Option For Customers In 2008

Verizon Wireless today announced that it will provide customers the option to use, on its nationwide wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon Wireless plans to have this new choice available to customers throughout the country by the end of 2008.

In early 2008, the company will publish the technical standards the development community will need to design products to interface with the Verizon Wireless network. Any device that meets the minimum technical standard will be activated on the network. Devices will be tested and approved in a $20 million state-of-the-art testing lab which received an additional investment this year to gear up for the anticipated new demand. Any application the customer chooses will be allowed on these devices.

This new option goes beyond just a change in the design, delivery, purchase, and provisioning of wireless devices and applications.

Google blocking AGPL in Google Code

  • The AGPL is a license that Google clearly dislikes for its own proprietary reasons — they have a vested corporate interest in impeding its popularity. I believe they are choosing not to allow AGPL'd code on their systems primarily for those reasons, and the “not popular enough” argument is a convenient excuse (now that they've lost their battle inside the OSI to block its approval).
