Web2Summit: TechCrunch pre-announces Murdoch/Myspace Conversation

  • TechCrunch does an impressive job of getting the scoop, but there's something a bit deceptive about posting the results of a pre-interview as if it were actually what was announced on stage.

heise online - MySpace baut eine Sandkiste für Entwickler

  • Facebook hat es getan, gestern auch Steve Jobs für das iPhone. Nun also auch MySpace.

  • Microsoft is reportedly in discussions to buy a 5 percent stake in Facebook, and the valuation of Facebook will reportedly be $10 billion to $15 billion.

Asked how the funding was going, Zuckerberg said, “It’s going well. We’re almost wrapped up.”

You could hear a pin drop. The fate of Silicon Valley rests on what this kid is going to do with his company, or so it seems.

  • He said the company has 45 million users now and 6,000 applications. More than 100,000 developers are creating third-party applications on Facebook’s social networking platform. The company has 300 employees and is likely to have more

than 700 next year, Zuckerberg said. He said the company tries to target breakeven performance and doesn’t try

to invest too far ahead of sales.

Startups Should Team Up to Grow « GigaOM

  • The low barriers to entry for building and deploying consumer web products has resulted in an abundance of companies, many of marginal utility.
  • “Every single one of these [technology] cycles lasted between eight and 11 years. The eight-year anniversary of the last collapse is in March 2008. Now, if someone wants to stand up and tell me why this cycle is somehow going to be a longer one — I’m all ears,” he says. If Rafer is right, then it is prudent for startups to start coming up with Plan B. And maybe Plan B should stand for “buying or merging.”

VentureBeat » Google’s sneak attack? Adsense for Facebook

  • Facebook has been clear about letting third-party developers sell ads on their own “canvas” pages on the site and keep all the revenue — a loophole that the Google seems to fit through just fine.
  • Building relationships with Facebook advertisers also allows Google to test how to successfully monetize third party applications before it introduces its own developer platform.

Attention - NewsGator and Bloglines Join APML Workgroup

  • Your Attention Data consists of all the information online about what you read, write, share and consume. Your Attention Profile is a very rich resource that vendors want to get their hands on (in order to target ads more effectively, for example) and that could open up a world of possibilities if you had easy access to it all yourself.

The Structured Web - A Primer

    into a structured XML heaven.

Techdirt: Bands Rushing To Ditch Labels And Embrace Free; Are The Floodgates Opening?

  • more bands are recognizing exactly what a bunch of folks knew was inevitable at least a decade ago. Unshackle the music, give it away free, and use it to make a lot of other stuff a lot more valuable, and there's plenty of money to be made. The only sad part in all of this is that the record labels have been not just blind to the idea -- they've actively tried to discredit anyone who pointed it out to them.

Burn: Nine Inch Nails Dumps Record Labels, Going Direct to Fans - Gizmodo

  • Hear that? It's the RIAA quaking in their diamond-coated boots as yet another A-list band gives labels the finger: Pretty hate machine Trent Reznor announced today that "as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label."

TLF: Music Wants to Be Free

  • in the long run, the market price of most music is going to be zero. I think Arrington actually focuses too much on piracy. Yes, in the short run peer-to-peer networks are an important source of price pressure. But the far more important factor is the sheer number of people who want to be rock stars. Now that the bottleneck of CD production and distribution has been removed, any musician can reach an infinite number of fans at zero cost. As a result, more and more musicians will find it in their self-interest to voluntarily give music away for free as a means of building up their fan base. Over time, consumers will get used to music being free

Are Recommendation Engines a Threat to the Long Tail?

  • Two Wharton academics released an interesting paper last week that asks whether online recommendation services are a threat to the aggregate diversity of items discovered by their users. The study is titled "Blockbuster Culture's Next Rise or Fall: The Impact of Recommender Systems on Sales Diversity"
  • Perhaps more importantly, the "Long Tail" of diverse discovery is an important part of the meritocratic and democratic promise of the new web.
