  • When you create your own community with mixxt, the implementation of this module provides entirely new ways of collaboration and organisation in the individual networks.

     

    A community within your community
     Within the privacy and rights management of each community, admins were given the opportunity to decide which users – “simple” members, moderators or administrators – are allowed to view or edit certain content. From now on, mixxt offers a module to create groups within these communities. Imagine many sub-communities within one greater community, where e.g. content and modules are visible and editable by group members only.

  • Hier gleichen sich beide Plattformen, setzen aber dennoch Akzente. Beide Anbieter haben ein Forum, Fotogallerien, Videogallerien, Veranstaltungskalender, ein Blog für jeden Nutzer, die Möglichkeit Textfelder hinzuzufügen und die Möglichkeit, RSS Feeds im eigenen Netzwerk von anderen Seiten zu holen. Doch wie schon gesagt, sowohl Mixxt, als auch Ning versuchen Akzente zu setzen. So gibt es bei Ning zum Beispiel die Möglichkeit, ein Gruppenfeature oder einen Chat einzubauen. Das ist sicherlich bei großen Netzwerken sinnvoll. Die entstehen aber erfahrungsgemäß selten. Mixxt geht hier einen anderen Weg. Es gibt keinen Chat und auch keine Gruppen. Stattdessen setzt Mixxt auf eine Wiki, die gegründet werden kann. Zusätzlich gibt es die Möglichkeit, Dateien zu tauschen. Außerdem hat Mixxt mit dem Stupsomat eine ähnliche Funktion, wie man sie von StudiVZ und Facebook kennt(bei StudiVZ heißt das ganze Gruscheln). Insgesamt ist das Funktionsrepertoir beider Netze für Social Networks mehr als ausreichend. Kleine Netzwerke werden aber sicher mit Mixxt glücklicher sein.
  • Von der Individualisierung ist Ning besser angelegt. Es ist fast alles konfigurierbar. Hier ist bei Mixxt viel, aber eben nicht ganz soviel möglich. Insgesamt sind auch die Designs bei Ning besser. Allerdings lässt sich mit etwas Arbeit bei Mixxt auch viel machen, wie man an den Websites von RSH und dem evangelischen Kirchentag sehen kann.

  • Setting up a (private or public) BitTorrent tracker may sound hard to some, but it isn’t. With Diferior, you are only a few clicks away from being the proud owner of a torrent site, private or public. That’s not all, the content management system also supports FTP and http downloads and comes with a blog and forums.

  • The downside is that it can only handle a couple of thousand peers, because it uses quite a lot of resources.

     

    People who want to be able to track more peers should go for the bundled XBTT tracker, which is really fast, but requires GCC and SSH access which some hosting accounts don’t offer. It can handle tens of thousands peers though, without breaking a sweat.
