the Web2.0 Rights project

Web2Rights - the project

Web2Rights is a JISC project, funded from 1st November 2007 – 31st March 2009, whose purpose was initially to develop practical, pragmatic and relevant Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and other legal issues toolkits to support the projects funded within the JISC Users and Innovation Programme (U&I) in their engagement with next generation technologies.
The Web2Rights team, comprised of lawyers, consultants, learning technologists and pedagogic experts focussed upon the need to address cultural and practical obstacles in engaging with Web2.0, IPR and other legal issues. Working in close collaboration with JISC Legal and focussing upon the specific issues raised by the U&I community of users, they have created a number of resources to address a variety of legal issues which might arise.

My Sunderland Blogs: Acceptable use of blogs Archives

Acceptable Use

What am I allowed to write on my blog?

You can write about anything that you like on your blog - a great night out, an idea for a project, or your favourite food! However, you must bear in mind that the University has strict regulations about the use of computing facilities, which all users are required to accept before they are assigned a IT Services username. They cover authorisation, copyright and defamation. Disciplinary procedures are in place to deal with breaches of these regulations. The regulations incorporate conditions for acceptable use of the national academic IT network, JANET. There is also a code of conduct that covers use of the public work areas and connection to the campus data network.

For more information see the Sunderland Blogs terms and conditions.

Also note that your blog is not an official means of communication with the University or any member of the University. If you wish to discuss something with your tutor or the counselling service, for example, you must get in touch with them via email, telephone, or in person.

Terms and conditions, Warwick Blogs

Terms and conditions, Warwick Blogs
[c]

A blog is a personal web page and the University is not responsible for any of the content contained in a blog, nor does the University assert any ownership over blog content. There may be some exceptions to this rule, where a blog is being written by University staff for some official purpose, but such exceptions will be individually identified and do not affect the general principle that responsibility and ownership of a blog rest with its author(s).

Even though blogs are personal web pages, the university's acceptable use policy still applies. In particular, this implies that:-

Drape's Takes: YouTube and Jordan School District Policy

In-Class Use of YouTube Videos

In connection with the Engaged Classroom professional development opportunity, we would like to share “model” lessons of how technology can be used to teach the curriculum. One particularly powerful piece of technology that can be used for educational purposes is the use of online video for instruction. YouTube is currently the industry standard in user-generated video distribution. Therefore, we think it only reasonable to allow the use of educationally sound YouTube content under controlled circumstances within the classroom. In this brief paper, we will elaborate and show that such behavior is within the confines of current district policy.

Drape's Takes: The Educator's Guide to the Creative Commons

The Educator's Guide to the Creative Commons
Wednesday, December 3, 2008

As not every teacher understands how to implement the Creative Commons into their curriculum, I thought I'd take a minute to explain how I would use it if I was in their shoes.

NUJ Freelance Fees Guide: Photography index

There are two main ways photographers charge for their work - either on commission, or through reproduction fees. In either case, as "authors" under the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988, and therefore owners of the copyright in their photographs, they are in fact issuing licenses to reproduce them. For convenience, however, the suggested rates are listed in the traditional categories of commission and repro fees.

The Photographer’s Right
A Downloadable Flyer Explaining Your Rights When Stopped or Confronted for Photography

The Photographer’s Right is a downloadable guide that is loosely based on the Bust Card and the Know Your Rights pamphlet that used to be available on the ACLU website. It may be downloaded and printed out using Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may make copies and carry them your wallet, pocket, or camera bag to give you quick access to your rights and obligations concerning confrontations over photography. You may distribute the guide to others, provided that such distribution is not done for commercial gain and credit is given to the author.

ASMP: Bill Miller's Strategy for Working with Nonprofit Organizations

Bill Miller’s Strategy for Working with Nonprofit Organizations

For a print article on pages 22 - 24 of the ASMP Bulletin’s Winter 2007 issue, Sarah Coleman interviewed eight photographers who have worked with nonprofits on various levels. She described the obvious benefits, the potential pitfalls and reported on how photographers have managed these relationships, and to what extent their normal business practices were appropriate. Here, Oregon-based photographer Bill Miller provides additional insight into a strategy he’s developed to make his nonprofit work a financially viable enterprise for his business needs and a win-win situation for all.

Digital Images & Fair Use Web Sites

Digital Images and Fair Use Web Sites

Maryly Snow
Librarian
Architecture Slide Library
University of California, Berkeley

I'm going to discuss digital images on the World Wide Web using three fair use web sites as examples: SPIRO, the visual public access catalog of the Architecture Slide Library at the University of California, Berkeley; the Vincent Van Gogh Information Gallery; and the Art Imagebase from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. This presentation is structured into three segments: introduction to the notion of fair use web sites; presentation of the three fair use web sites; problems and idealized solutions for the use of digital images in fair use web sites.

ASMP: Terms and Conditions

Terms & Conditions for your business paperwork

Good paperwork is of the utmost importance in your business. It helps prevent misunderstandings, protects your legal and financial interests, and conveys a crisp, businesslike impression to your clients.

Every few years, ASMP publishes a new edition of its manual Professional Business Practices in Photography. The sample business forms in that book represent the best business practices in our ever-changing industry. The medium of print, however, is entirely static and cannot convey the vast range of options that good paperwork must encompass. The Web, in contrast, provides a malleable medium in which the text can be varied to reflect the choices made by users. Hence this module.

ASMP: ASMP Recommended Business Forms

Why These Forms are Critical to Your Business

By Victor Perlman and Richard Weisgrau

Every business day, photographers have a need to communicate transactional information to their prospects and clients. It might be the information in an estimate, the agreement expressed in a confirmation, or the verification of a delivery of photographs. Regardless of the nature of the communication, records of your communications are important, especially when they set the terms, conditions, price, and license to use your work.

ASMP: Copyright Application Tutorial

ASMP’s Copyright Application Tutorial

Your original images are your legacy. Like many a photographer, you probably expect to retire on the royalties from the photographs you have made over the years. Early planning, especially with proper copyright protection, can facilitate this. Although every original photograph you create is automatically copyrighted the instant the shutter is clicked, you don’t get much legal protection unless you follow through on a few things.

So it is important for you to develop an easy system that will allow you to quickly and regularly register your copyrights as soon as possible. In this ASMP Tutorial on copyright, we explain the necessary steps to take and the problems that you should avoid.
