Surfonomics 101: You knew it, but here it is in $

Davenport, CA/Mundaka, Basque Country, Spain – Save The Waves Coalition announced the release of its first “Surfonomics” study, to measure the economic value of the surfing wave at Mundaka to the local economy. Mundaka is a town whose economy relies heavily on surf tourism, and in 2005 the wave was temporarily lost due to river dredging for a large ship-building project. “A beautiful surfing wave like Mundaka is truly a world treasure,” said Save The Waves executive director Dean LaTourrette. “This study provides evidence of not just the environmental value of a Mundaka, but of the economic value as well, reinforcing the notion that it and other spots like it need to be protected.”

The study, entitled “The Impact of Surfing on the Local Economy of Mundaka, Spain,” was conducted by graduate student Melissa Murphy of the Univesity of Oregon’s College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, with the help of Maria Bernal from Autonoma University Madrid, and was commissioned by Save The Waves Coalition.

Economist's View

Honoring Paul Krugman, by Edward L. Glaeser: ...Paul ... Krugman’s fame as a public intellectual should not lead anyone to think that they understand his contributions to economic research just because they regularly read his columns.

The Nobel Prize citation highlights two distinct but connected contributions: Mr. Krugman’s development of the “new trade theory” and his work on the “new economic geography.” International trade has a long history in economics, and for the bulk of the field’s history, patterns of trade have been explained by factor endowments and comparative advantage. Why does England export wool and Portugal export wine? The cold winters of Yorkshire produce really fluffy sheep and the banks of the Douro produce splendid grapes. Yet comparative advantage does little to explain much of modern international trade, especially not trade within industries.

The Associated Press: Bush critic Paul Krugman wins economics Nobel

Paul Krugman, whose relentless criticism of the Bush administration includes opposition to the $700 billion financial bailout, won the Nobel prize in economics Monday for his work on international trade patterns.
The Princeton University professor and New York Times columnist is the best-known American economist to win the prize in decades.
The Nobel committee commended Krugman's work on global trade, beginning with a 10-page paper in 1979 that knit together two fields of study, helping foster a better understanding of why countries produce similar products and why people move from the small towns to cities.

Economic Valuation of Coral Reefs in the Caribbean | World Resources Institute

Coral reefs and mangroves are critical components of the marine environment. These biologically rich habitats provide important ecosystem services to local and regional economies, including tourism, shoreline protection, and fisheries. Coral reefs supply much of the sand for the region’s beautiful beaches, and draw divers and snorkelers to explore the diversity of marine life that they support. Stretching along great lengths of Caribbean coastline, reef and mangrove ecosystems also provide a natural barrier that protects the land from the worst ravages of tropical storms. As reefs and mangroves degrade and disappear, these services are diminished, resulting in economic losses to coastal communities.
