National Ocean Economics Program
Established in 1999, the National Ocean Economics Program (NOEP) provides a full range of the most current economic and socio-economic information available on changes and trends along the U.S. coast and in coastal waters. The program is funded by federal, state, university, and private grants and contracts.
Sea Around Us Products
The Sea Around Us Project investigates the impact of fisheries on the world's marine ecosystems. This is achieved by using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to map global fisheries catches from 1950 to the present, under explicit consideration of major critical habitats of fish, marine invertebrates, marine mammals and other components of marine biodiversity. The data presented, which are freely available, are meant to support studies of global fisheries trends and the development of sustainable, ecosystem-based fisheries policies.
PISCO |
PISCO is a large-scale marine research program that focuses on understanding the nearshore ecosystems of the U.S. West Coast. An interdisciplinary collaboration of scientists from four universities, PISCO integrates long-term monitoring of ecological and oceanographic processes at dozens of coastal sites with experimental work in the lab and field. We explore how individual organisms, populations, and ecological communities vary over space and time. PISCO's findings are applied to issues of ocean conservation and management, and are shared through our public outreach and student training programs.
Corals, Already in Danger, Face New Threat in Algae Grown by People - NYTimes.com
Corals are being covered and smothered to death by a bushy seaweed that is so tough even algae-grazing fish avoid it. It settles in the reef’s crevices that fish once called home, driving them away.
Dead coral stops supporting the ecosystem and, within a couple of decades, it will crumble into rubble, allowing big ocean waves to reach the beach during storms and destroy the flimsy thatched huts of the Micronesians.
“We are catching less and less fish, and the seaweeds are fouling our nets,” says Henry Totie, a fisherman and Butaritari’s traditional chief, in an interview in his traditionally built house in the village near the blue-green lagoon.
Lenfest Ocean Program
Welcome to the Lenfest Ocean Program Web site. We support scientific research on living marine resources that will help decision makers both understand the causes and consequences affecting the global marine environment, and design and implement policies that will sustainably manage ocean ecosystems.
Florida Sea Grant-About Us-Impacts
Success of Florida Sea Grant ultimately is measured by the impacts of the program in regard to sustaining coastal economies and environments. While program impacts are sometimes challenging to assess, because they may not unfold until years after a particular project ends, there are a variety of success stories in Florida Sea Grant, as a result of the program’s stakeholder-driven strategic planning and implementation processes, the focus of research on issues of practical importance to Floridians, and the state-wide network of extension specialists that link objective science outputs with ‘in the water’ solutions. Listed below are just some of the examples of program success, organized into the seven thematic program areas and two cross cutting program areas identified in the 2006-2009 Florida Sea Grant strategic plan.

Run Noisy, Run Deep - The New York Times

The ocean is often thought of as quiet and idyllic, but its residents are actually a noisy bunch. Here are samples of some of the sounds that fish make. (Related Article: What's Making That Awful Racket? Surprisingly, It May Be Fish")
Expanding Deserts, by Land and Sea - Dot Earth - Climate Change and Sustainability - New York Times Blog
-
Now scientists have measured a rapid recent expansion of desert-like barrenness in the subtropical oceans –- in places where surface waters have also been steadily warming. There could be a link to human-driven climate change, but it’s too soon to tell, the scientists said.
-
relatively plankton-free (and thus fish-free) stretches of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans around the tropics that typically cover about 20 percent of the global ocean surface have expanded about 15 percent since 1998, according to the new study. The change was measured using the orbiting SeaWiFS instrument, which can measure the abundance of plankton by tracking color differences in sea water.
The drop in productivity could be related to the hotter surface waters, or changes in winds, the researchers said. Either factor could prevent deeper, nutrient-rich water from rising to nourish plankton and, indirectly, other marine life.
