Educational Vodcasting - Home
Two brilliant high school chemistry teachers have completely switched the lecture at school/homework at home paradigm. Their students watch the lecture at home as a vodcast (on computer, iPod, or DVD) and do problem sets at school with help from the teachers. Check out the news story from the local TV station. I used to live near Woodland Park...
PicLits.com - Create a PicLit
Drag and drop (or type) words from a word bank onto an image. Would be outstanding for writing Haiku. Reviewed by Kelly Tenkley at iLearn Technology Jan 14, 2009.
Learn how to write a sentence and paragraph!
Very kid friendly tutorial on paragraph writing using an apple.
Spelling City
Amazing spelling site recommended by James Hollis (Teachers Love SMARTBoards). Definitely instant implementation. Input a list of spelling words and click test me, teach me, or play a game. The test me section gives the word orally , uses it in a sentence, and the student spells it and gets feedback. The teach me section spells the word orally and uses it in a sentence. The play a game section instantly generates games such as word search, crosswords, hangman using the spelling words. The games work great on a smartboard.
Writing Activities for Ancient Egypt
Unbelievable graphics and 14 great writing activities based on interesting photos of Egyptian artifacts. For each activity, you have a choice of displaying the activity on the screen or printing it out.
The Week in Rap
Unbelievably good video with rap. The Week in Rap provides a weekly summary of current events in a hip-hop music video for teens and students. If you're bothered by the mostly American content, issue a challenge to your students to create the Canadian version. Recommended by Kelly Tenkley at iLearn Technology.
eduScapes: A Site for Life-long Learners
Outstanding place to look for theme-related resources. Go directly to the 4 t2 Explore tab, search by curriculum unit, and you'll be hooked. There are more curriculum resources than you could possibly use under each topic. The articles in the Activate: The Journal of Technology-Rich Learning tab are also great.
World Maps - geography online games
Best geography games I've seen. These are excellent tutorials and games that would work well on the SMARTBoard. The Canadian Geography activites are particularly good. For example, in the Province Names tutorial, you click on each province and its name appears on the map along with a sidebar containing information about the province. In other games, you drag the province into place on the map. World geography quizzes galore - over 250 fun online map games teach capitals, country locations, and more. Also info on the culture, history, and much more.
Wordle - Beautiful Word Clouds
This is a toy for generating colourful and interesting word clouds from text. This text can be typed, copied and pasted from another source, or imported directly from a blog url or rss feed. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, colours, and layouts. Take a screen shot to save your creation as there isn't a way to export as a jpeg. Wordles would make great title pages or slides and could be a fun class brainstorming activity or a way for kids to practice writing their spelling words. Kids could create a wordle of adjectives to describe themselves or a character in a novel. They could also be used to analyze student writing for repetitious words or to get the gist of an article. See my wordle tag or WebSlide list of sites with ideas for using Wordle in the classroom.
Museum Box Homepage
Students can create a virtual museum box in which to collect items such as text, photos, video, and uploaded items needed to make an argument, describe a person or historical/geographical site etc. Students can also view other museum boxes and comment. For classroom use ideas, see Kelly Tenkley's Jan 06, 2009 post at iLearn Technology. This website was inspired by Thomas Clarkson who carried around a real museum box of artifacts to make a case for the abolition of slavery. Each compartment is actually a cube that expands into 6 more "sides" for storing information. Very cool.
Science Up Close
Excellent engaging and educationally sound instructional videos. This science site for grades 1-6 also has great accessibility options including visual, auditory and keyboard shortcuts. I learned about this from Paul Hamilton's October 20, 2008 post. According to Paul, Many of the activities include captioned video where the "captions" can be read aloud. Other activities use diagrams and interactive images to present material. All text can be read aloud, and can be repeated upon request.
Shmoop Literature: Summary, Analysis, Themes, Characters, Paper
Great resource for secondary students. Click on a novel's title and find the summary, notes, guides, and analysis of themes and characters, videos and links to other web resources. The aim of this website is to make learning more relevant and fun for students in the digital age. Graduate students have compiled some excellent units.
HowStuffWorks - Learn How Everything Works!
There are excellent quality instructional videos on everything imaginable here. I searched for life cycle and got 106 educational videos on the life cycle of frogs, butterflies, bananas, stars, etc. The geography section has an astounding collection of Canada videos introducing the provinces and the geographical regions. HowStuffWorks explains hundreds of subjects, from car engines to lock-picking to ESP, using clear language and tons of illustrations. We do the research so you don't have to.
FreeRice
Give free rice to hungry people by playing a simple word game. This would be a fun activity for intermediate and high school students. if the words are too difficult for students, they can start back at level 1 with words like "penny" and "pony". You can also change the subject at the top of the screen to practice grammar, geography, time tables, and other skills. Warning...it's completely addictive.
Magic Pen by Alejandro Guillen
Too fun and very addictive. Wait for the small ad to finish, then click Play and then Play again to get into the game. The object is to advance a small red ball along a course to capture a flag. Uses basic shapes, hinges, and pins. Objects behave the way they would in the real world, so they are subject to gravity. After you've tried a few of the more difficult levels, search for Magic Pen on YouTube and prepare to be amazed at some of the ingeneous solutions. I am sad to report that it isn't very easy to use on the SMARTBoard.
National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Excellent site with online math manipulatives. Would be great on the SMARTBoard. A digital library containing Java applets and activities for K-12 mathematics
Jim Reed's Math Simulations
Incredible collection of flash to teach middle and high school math. The flash is interactive, allowing you to change a variable such as the value of an exponent and then see how that changes the value in an equation. For example, kids can experiment by altering the value of exponents to learn why we keep the base and add exponents when we're multiplying two powers with the same base. Jim teaches in Alberta.
