Robert Monroe

-
His 1971 book
Journeys Out of the Body was the first to truly popularise this phenomenon outside of the Theosophical and Occult subcultures. - 14 more annotations...
-
-
Robert Monroe (1915-1995) was an American businessman who in 1958 found himself having spontaneous out of body (astral travel) experiences.
-
Wishing to avoid the metaphysical bias associated with the term "astral", he and Charles Tart coined the term "out-of-body experience" (OBE).
-
The book sold more than a million copies, and made the "out-of-body experience" a household word.
-
In 1978, Monroe founded
The Monroe Institute. -
He developed the technology known as Hemi-Sync, which have helped people with everything from meditation and learning, to insomnia, quitting smoking, and pain control.
-
Like other explorers of subtle realms such as Max Theon, Robert Monroe sought to provide an understanding and mapping out of these realities that is not based on previous esoteric belief systems, and like Theon, he coined his own jargon that can be cionfusing until you get the hang of it.
-
His later books explore themes of afterlife existence, alien intelligence, and multiple selves, and are less accessible and more threatening to the consensus paradigm.
-
But reality is not only far stranger than we imagine, but far stranger than we can imagine, although the work of Monroe and others help in extending the boundaries of the Known.
-
I do not consider his books should be read as literal truth. Rather, they are the Truth as Monroe experienced it. Other astral travellers and clairvoyants and mystics may have different Truths. Or they may share the same Truth.
-
Every Truth is partial, yet valid.
-
Some, such as the Truths experienced by Sri Aurobiondo and The Mother, are more expansive, others, such as the Truths of Scepticism/Scientism and Fundamentalism, are more narrow.
-
One thing that impressed me in reading his books, although it may not mean as much to others, is Monroe's obvious love of animals.
-
To me, this is a sign of a great soul.
-
Also I am impressed by his dedication to understanding the larger nature of the realities he explored

They are offering incentives of monies received to students to allow themselves to be hooked up into these stargate systems they've set up in order to bring out what is coming forth on to earth. Dead spirits would be a better word for aliens. Avatar is now a word on the internet that means spirits. Hundreds of years of bringing forth spirits thru witchmongering as mentioned in The Ethics of Addiction when stating their comparisons in the technique of creating the addict & $!

-
When they broadcasted their intentions for their documentary on the Alex Jones Radio show - which he hosted from Austin, Texas and NOT Istanbul that year - all the world, including the military intelligence protecting Bilderberg learned about them.
-
After this, their documentary quite conveniently became another propaganda device for the Alex Jones camp, to the effect that most people who watch it now believe it's another one of his movies.
-
I've even read reviews where people assumed they took most of their footage from Alex's documentary Endgame, which is preposterous.
-
It really makes me wonder whether the allegations about him being "controlled opposition", a "gate-keeper on the truth", or somehow being related to Project Mockingbird are justified?
-
Is Alex Jones an Inside Job?
-
Again, I have nothing against the guys who made the documentary and I did everything I could to help them out as fellow filmmakers, but I still have questions about what really happened especially after attempts were made to steer their documentary.
-
I mean, Daniel Estulin knows much more about the Bilderberg Group than I do. They followed him for almost a year, yet he was cut from the final movie. Don't you find that a little strange?
-
Jim Tucker hardly appears in the movie and he's been following Bilderberg for 30 years!
-
Essentially, you should never take anything at face value, even within the alternative media, as that too is susceptible to manipulation.
-
Richard Thomas: One of the topics I deliberately didn't ask you about was UFOs or Unidentified Flying Objects. I mention what the often misused initials stand for because I understand you're pretty sceptical about the Extraterrestrial hypothesis which has become synonymous with the abbreviation.
-
I suppose my question is what do you think UFOs could represent and perhaps more importantly why?
-
Timucin Leflef: I'm sceptical about the extraterrestrial hypothesis because I know that "fear of the unknown" is a great way of motivating the masses into giving up their personal freedoms for increased security.
-
If people are lead to believe they're being invaded by "aliens", that their own governments are powerless to defend them and that the only answer is to join a U.N.-backed global military dictatorship, then they will willingly relinquish their national sovereignty, personal freedoms and property for an alleged "greater good", especially if they believe it will save them.
-
Pretty soon they'll find themselves slaves to an autocratic world government which will dictate their every choice – one example being the number of children they will be permitted to have, which is already being enforced in China.
-
It will essentially be a world where they will have less rights than they were born with.
-
The truth is, it doesn't matter whether aliens exist or not, what really matters is what does the Global Elite want you to believe?
-
It has been well documented that UFO technology was developed by the Nazis in order to win the Second World War.
-
This technology was then transferred to the United States, most likely under Project Paperclip, in an attempt to take control of it before the Russians could.
-
As fellow Sci-Fi Worlds interviewee Nick Redfern pointed out in his book Body Snatchers In The Desert, the Roswell incident was simply a military experiment that went wrong.
-
The whole alien crash scenario was a great way of covering up the fact they used Japanese Prisoners of War in an experiment that would have eventually been deemed inhumane under the guidelines of the Geneva Convention.
-
Stories about alien encounters have often turned out to be cover stories for military experiments or technology.
-
The alien invasion hoax is also another reason why so many Hollywood science fiction movies involve aliens arriving in vast armadas to destroy us and take over our planet.
-
They were quite prevalent in the 50s and you can find modern-day examples like ID4: Independence Day, War of the Worlds and even Mars Attacks.
-
Very few movies about extra-terrestrials actually involve aliens with peaceful intentions. E.T. certainly comes to mind, but even movies where they arrive as our benevolent "saviours" like The Day The Earth Stood Still, is still another permutation of the New World Order hoax, in which case it's about giving up our sovereignty, our "petty little differences" as Reagan put it, and joining a fascist global regime in order to achieve an alleged "world peace".
-
It will be world peace but with a seriously heavy price on our freedoms.
-
Mostly, though, these movies are programming us to believe that once we see vast armadas of classified military vehicles hovering in the sky, that they will in fact be UFOs driven by "extra-terrestrials" who are here to "kill us and take over our planet."
-
And then the only solution we'll be presented with will be a heavy reliance on a Militarised 'New World Order' to save us. That's where the real agenda lies.
-
Richard Thomas: In The New World Order there's a short clip from your film A.D. How did the film come about and what do you think have been some of your biggest sci-fi influences as a screenwriter?
-
Timucin Leflef: Back in 1991 I wrote a satirical short story for our school magazine at a time when the Catholic Church was kicking up a storm about prophylactics being sold at the Virgin Megastore.
-
The story involved the Catholic Church taking over Ireland some time in the near future in order to restore their waning power and was a way of acknowledging the fact we had been under a Catholic Dictatorship since the 1920's.
-
I also wrote it to acknowledge the many stories that were surfacing about some priests' predilections for young boys, which also came quite close to affecting my own life in my late teens.
-
When I returned from university in 1997, I rewrote the story as a 30-minute short film script entitled Totalit-Eireann, a play on the words Totalitarian and Eireann – the Irish genitive word for 'Ireland'.
-
It was a mixture of ideas from Blade Runner to Isaac Asimov's robot stories and was about robots scapegoated by a futuristic fascist military regime.
-
However, my attempts at getting 80k worth of film finance for it a year later failed. For budgetary reasons and for the fact that I was adamant to make it anyway, I retitled it A.D. and changed it from being a story about robot 'good guys' into alien 'bad guys'.
-
I found that it would be easier and more cost-effective to have a man in a scary-looking alien mask than to build a convincing-looking robot.
-
However, even at a revised 10k budget, it was still difficult to get money for my movie, perhaps because most people didn't believe a special effects film could be made at that level.
-
It eventually came to a point where in 2000 I was working as a cameraman for a Community TV station which was being closed down by the Irish Government.
-
In the middle of all this I had the inspired idea to make the sci-fi movie on a shoestring budget, with no proper funding, no equipment and no real idea how the finished product would turn out. It was a risk, but I had to take it as I knew nobody else could make it.
-
Fortunately, when you get the ball rolling, providence ensues and people are more than willing to help you out. We shot most of it on a 3-chip mini-DV camera which I borrowed off a friend and edited the footage later on my computer.
-
My biggest sci-fi influences for A.D. had to be Blade Runner, The Terminator and of course The Matrix, hence the cheap experimental bullet-time effects.
-
Add to this my biggest sci-fi influences over the years which were 2001: A Space Odyssey, Total Recall, Robocop, Aliens, The Running Man and The Time Tunnel TV Series.
-
You could probably add Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior to this list, although like the swine flu shot, it's not quite mandatory… yet.
-
Richard Thomas: The trailer for Project Bluebeam, your other film, seems to be heavily based on the old 1950s sci-fi and horror trailers: are you a fan of those kind of films at all and, if so, what are some of your favourites? I'm a big fan of the old Hammer and Universal horror films myself so I don't know if they were an influence or not.
-
Timucin Leflef: Well, I do love movies from that era, especially the ones that are visually stylish, thrilling and funny. That's why I've always liked Hitchcock movies, especially North By Northwest and also the early Bond movies from the 60s, like Goldfinger and From Russia With Love. Dr. Strangelove is also a personal favourite of mine for these reasons. It has to do with finding a certain type of tone, style and humour.
-
With the UFO B-movies of the 50's, I essentially like them for their unintentional humour, which I find is often funnier than the gross-out comedies you see nowadays.
-
Project Bluebeam itself is a way of harking back to those movies from the 1940s and 50s with their film noir style, quaint-looking effects, and their naïve outlook on 'the future'.
-
I like the idea of making a sci-fi film noir done very much like Sin City, except funny, in colour and hopefully - if I can get the budget for it - in 3D.
-
Richard Thomas: One of the things I love about A.D. and from the look of it Project Bluebeam too is that they seem to be borrowing heavily from conspiracy culture and blending it together with sci-fi.
-
Looking back on it maybe that's exactly what George Orwell did with Nineteen Eighty-Four, although, you're doing it in a much more tongue in cheek style. Do you think this might be a more successful formula for waking the general public up?
-
Timucin Leflef: Well, yes. The plan is to wake people up to certain possibilities and the best way of reaching them would be through popular culture.
-
Books are certainly one way of achieving this goal and both George Orwell and Aldous Huxley were quite successful in alerting people to the Elite's fascist global agenda.
-
Documentaries are another way, but over the years I have noticed how several researchers, writers and documentary makers have either been murdered or have died under suspicious circumstances, including Bill Cooper, Rik Clay, Jim Keith, Stephen Knight and allegedly Hunter S. Thompson who was making a documentary.
-
Which begs the question why is Alex Jones still alive?
-
However, mainstream features are most likely the best choice in my view. Not only are they a means of reaching a mass audience, but primarily because you're telling a story to entertain people.
-
And what better a way to enlighten than through entertainment? This is what I think Stanley Kubrick was attempting to do with some of his movies, like Dr. Strangelove, which in my opinion is a perfect satire on Dr. Henry Kissinger and his cra-haaa-zy pro-nuclear foreign policy.
-
Anthony Burgess admitted that A Clockwork Orange was based on rumours about the British Government's use of mind control techniques on prisoners in the 1970s.
-
And of course Eyes Wide Shut - just Google the Elite's interest in Satanic ritual and I'll say no more.
-
Feature films therefore may be a safer alternative as they can give you a degree of artistic license. I find comedies tend to be popular,
-
and sci-fi is certainly one genre that allows people to suspend their disbelief to the point where they're open to accepting fresh ideas, which is useful if you're attempting to cause a shift in people's consciousness.
-
This is why a movie like The Matrix could only have worked as Sci-Fi. Try doing it as a musical - "Hey Dude, Where's My Gun? I just found out I'm The One" – and it may not have been as effective.
-
Richard Thomas: Given your Irish background people might be a little surprised that Roman Catholicism instead of British imperialism is presented as the capstone of the New World Order in A.D.
-
Why did you make this choice and does it reflect your own research or upbringing at all? How important do you think the Vatican might be in this New World Order?
-
Timucin Leflef: Again, it was another of those cases where I had written a story which turned out to be more accurate than I had initially realised.
-
I wrote it originally to poke fun at Catholic Imperialism.
-
Fortunately, after doing further research, I was pleasantly surprised I had hit the nail on the head, albeit through sheer dumb luck on my part.
-
Legally speaking, the U.S. is still a colony of the British Empire, but Britain itself was colonised by Rome.
-
As the Vatican is a continuation of the Roman Empire which itself has been around for over two millennia, you'll find they have accumulated a vast amount of wealth over that period.
-
They funded Hitler and then created the Bilderberg Group to continue Hitler's plan for a New World Order.
-
This is why both the Nazi Prince Bernhardt and Eugenicist Joseph Rettinger were Knights of Malta.
-
It also turns out that the Vatican is a military order, much like in my movie, which is why some of their members have titles such as 'Knights' or 'Generals'.
-
Essentially, if you follow the money, you'll find the Vatican is a major player in the scheme of things and that the old adage "All Roads Lead To Rome" is still applicable to this day.
-
Richard Thomas: In A.D. we follow Malice 101 a genetically engineered assassin "perfect in every way" and programmed to kill.
-
Given this do you share my concerns about what is called the "Transhumanist" movement and what are your thoughts on scientists like Professor of cybernetics at Reading University Kevin Warwick?
-
(You might want to watch this video)
-
Timucin Leflef: Wow, you make her sound like she's Mary Poppins on steroids. I've never heard that actual term being used before, although I do know that mind control experiments have been around since the 1950s when MK-ULTRA was formed as a research programme into chemical control of the human mind.
-
Then in the 1960s, Dr. JosE Delgado's pioneering research lead to the development of the 'stimoceiver', a radio receiver which could be implanted into the brain to create what would have eventually lead to, in Delgado's view, the creation of a "Psychocivilized Society".
-
He demonstrated this device by implanting it into a bull's brain and managed to stop it from charging at him simply by pressing a button. This transmitted a radio frequency to the bull which stopped it in its tracks.
-
The demonstration was filmed, is well documented and lead to further research being done through a covert military operation in the1970s known as Project MILAB.
-
Again, the idea of 'alien abduction' and 'alien implants' was used as a clever way of covering the fact they were conducting military mind control experiments on an unsuspecting public.
-
A documentary was even shown on Irish national television in the late 1990s in which European MEPs were attempting to get these experiments stopped.
-
I do find it quite concerning that the modern-day equivalent of this device, the VeriChip, is being touted as a medical necessity, allegedly to allow emergency services to gain quick access to your medical records, or to "find your granny" who may have "strayed away from the old folks home".
-
Apparently, a variation of this means of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) will be used as a replacement for cash, but there is a far more sinister application behind it.
-
If you've been implanted subdermally with an RFID chip, not only will they be able to track your location through the mobile phone network, which will act as a net in some ways, but the fact that it operates on microwave frequencies leaves it open for potential misuse as a mind control device, much like Delgado's work in the 60's.
-
According to sources from within the Bilderberg Group, mass-microchipping was discussed at their meeting in Chantilly, Virginia in 2008.
-
This will allegedly be for reasons of "National Security" or "anti-terrorism", but will in fact be used to keep tabs on us and control us, very much like what happened to Jewish people during the Holocaust.
-
Again, Bill Cooper was the one who predicted they would be using such devices to control populations in a "cashless system of economic control",
-
so be very wary once they start promoting RFID tagging for our 'safety'.
-
In my opinion, after viewing the link you provided, the Professor you mention reminds me of those nuclear physicists in the 1940's who were short sighted enough to believe they were developing the A-Bomb for 'World Peace', only to later discover what a monstrous military weapon they had unleashed on the world.
-
His insistence that Transhumanism will lead to "making a lot of money" and will also lead to "a lot of power" speaks for itself.
-
In my opinion he is an insult to University Professors everywhere in that he shows no sign of independent critical thought but chooses instead to regurgitate the same old ideals of the Nazi Eugenicists. It is irresponsible and highly dangerous.
-
Richard Thomas: Are you working on or have any ideas for any other sci-fi films right now? Also if you could write for any sci-fi series past or present, film or TV what would it be and what do you think you'd do different?
-
Timucin Leflef: Well, I've been developing A.D. and Project Bluebeam, both of which are features, over the last few years.
-
I was also making my own documentary on the New World Order, but was whacked on the back of the head last year in a suspicious assault, so I guess I may have to back out of that now.
-
The funny thing is Jim Tucker predicted something like that would happen.
-
Richard Thomas: Thanks again Tim, maybe we can do this again sometime. Where can our readers watch your films and maybe find any websites or blogs you might have?

Timucin Leflef: Most certainly. You can check out my site lightfilms.com and also see my short films at

501...WHY THE ACADEMIC SECRECY AND COVER-UPS?
-
QUESTION: I consider myself an intelligent
person but for the life of me I willnever
understand why all the secrecy and denial that all these things exist, whatdo
you think? Shirley - 48 more annotations...
-
-
ANSWER: As you know, you won’t hear these things in
school. Shattered mythsstill
dominate the textbooks we learn from. -
Do
you know that up to 200 years after the flat earth theory was disproved, schoolsin Europe were still teaching it as fact?
-
Entrenched
theories do die hard. It takes time. And the discoveries
I am sharing do challenge the entrenched evolution theory. -
However,
a hopeful trend is emerging.
Biology
tutor Sue Addinell (Islington 6th Form College in UK) reported thechanging
nature of the biology syllabus. -
In the 1990s there had been a
shift
away from the evidence for evolution towards the practical applicationof
biological science. One current textbook now had no mention of Darwinin
its index. -
It is no wonder that
leading evolutionists such as Steve Jones and Richard
Dawkins are becoming
so incensed. They are losing and they can't understandit.
-
Andrew Jacobs reported in the
New York Times of January 30, 2004 that“Education
officials in the state of Georgia removed the word “evolution” andscaled
back ideas about the natural selection of species in a proposed set ofguidelines
for school science classes.”That’s
a start! -
Many honest scientists are caught up in
the system – and sincerely misinformed. It was all they
were taught. They do not know about the evidence against it. -
Constant
exposure to something, in most cases, leads to its acceptance. AsHitler acknowledged, “Tell
a lie long enough and people will come to believe it.” -
However,
we do need to face this fact. The present system is in the grip ofpowerful
men with enormous money behind them – and an agenda. -
Established
systems of science, education and public media are thoroughlycommitted
to the belief that macro-evolution is a “fact”, so you will seldomhear
the FACTS about discoveries which totally upset that belief. -
Carl Sagan
clones repeatedly spout off words such as “billions and billions ofyears”.
And ten years of evolution is crammed down the throats of our children.By and large the Establishment
refuses to accept the fossil evidence at face value. -
Most
university graduates have acquired their degrees through this system. They
now find their careers, their reputations and their very livelihood at risk, should
they admit publicly that what they have been teaching is a big mistake. -
Many
who have renounced the theory of evolution have not only lost fundingfor
their projects, they have also been misrepresented, ridiculed
and fired. Andmuch of their research has then
been destroyed. Examples of such treatmentcould fill
volumes. -
And here’s something
else to consider. It is almost impossible for any personwho
has taken a public stance on a certain position, to make a public admissionthat
what he has taught is wrong. -
So
the unsuspecting public continues to be fed this planned menu. Those in chargeinfluence the education
system, the media and the publishing industry.
But
we can help change that. -
502...GOLD CHAIN DEEP IN COAL
-
QUESTION:
I wonder if you have any information regarding a goldchain that was found
in a lump of coal somewhere in America (I'm prettysure
it was 1800 and something). I read about a long time ago, but I cannot
seem to find out anything about it.I
enjoy your website and tantalising emails. Keep it up. Dan Soper -
ANSWER:
On June 9, 1891, Mrs S.W. Culp in Morrinsville, Illinois,
accidentally
dropped a shovelful of coal on the floor. One large piece broke
open. Inside
it was an intricately made 8 carat gold chain, 10 inches long,
coiled and
embedded. When the coal broke into two pieces, the two endsof
the chain remained attached, one to each piece of coal. -
The
coal, said to be of the "carboniferous era", several million years ago, came
from a mine in Pennsylvania. (Morrinsville Times, June 11, 1891) -
This,
and other evidences of man found in coal, go against the prevailingevolutionary
dogma that coal was formed millions of years before manappeared
on earth. -
1.
that man is millions of years older than thought, or2.
that the coal is not millions of years old. -
I
It is
have a newly released book on this and other discoveries of this nature.
called Surprise Witness. -
503...HOW DOES RADIOMETRIC DATING WORK?
-
QUESTION:
Could you explain to me in
the simplest form you can what is radiometric
dating and how it works, so
I can understand the basic concept of it. Olga -
ANSWER: The methods that can give us ideas of the earth’s
age(“geological clocks”, one calls them) are
all based on the theory that naturalprocesses
which occur steadily through time will produce cumulative andoften
measurable results. -
Three
popular dating methods are uranium into lead, potassium into argon, and
rubidium into strontium. -
In each case, when a molten rock cools and
solidifies,
then any radio-active “parent” element is supposed to decay intoits
“daughter” element at a known, slow rate. The amount
of each stillremaining today in a rock will
tell us the “age” of that rock -
Carbon
dating is another method, used to determine how long ago somethingin
the animal or vegetable kingdom died.It
is based on the radioactive decay rate in organic matter. -
While
it is alive, very living thing absorbs cosmic radio-active carbon-14 fromthe
atmosphere. -
At death, this intake ceases and the radiocarbon
in theorganism begins
to disintegrate. The amount of remaining C-14 is used
tocalculate how long
ago the organism died. -
The validity of
carbon dating depends on three assumptions:
1. That the amount
of cosmic radiation in the atmosphere has remainedconstant at all
times in all places;
2.
That the sample tested has not been contaminated
by recent microbesor
bacteria;3. That there has
been no exchange with the outside world. -
When
carbon dating was first announced by Dr. Libby in 1949, it was thoughtto
be the last word, but that early confidence is no longer justified. It
has been discovered that cosmic radiations vary widely, due to many factors, natural
and industrial. -
Suppose
you enter a sealed room which contains nothing but a burning candle. You
are asked to determine how long the candle has been burning. You soonrealise
how impossible this is. You could measure the relative
amounts of oxygenand
carbon dioxide in the room; or you could try to figure
out how long themelted
wax took to accumulate. -
But
you cannot know whether someone had opened and re-shut the window. Was
it ever put out and re-lit? Could some interruption
have caused it to burnfaster?
There
is room for enormous error. -
Dating cannot deal with unique events. They’re gone.
You cannot re-run them.You
cannot repeat a test on them. -
Every
radiometric dating method we operate today is invalid as a scientific testfor
the past. You cannot guarantee it. It
remains nothing more than a reasonedguess.
-
There are so many unknown factors to consider. And
these are not appreciatedby many scientists
who use the method itself. -
Science
cannot deal with the past. Consequently, there is
no test available nowthat
can give you a scientifically guaranteed date for the past.
All we can do isuse
the methods about which we can make assumptions that are reasonable. -
So when you’re told a certain date has been proved, you’re hearing someone
who
either doesn’t understand the scientific test, or who (hopefully not) is lyingto you.
-
QUESTION:
Do
you fear for your life when you find these things?
-
ANSWER:
No,
because I love truth more than life itself. I have survived attempts made on
my life. So will carry on. -
QUESTION:
What
is your Opinion on the "Hollow Earth" theory? -
ANSWER:
There
are certain phenomena which are hard to explain, unless the interior of the earth
is hollow. Yes, it's a strong possibility. -

This amazing UFO documentary film was produced in 1977. It was way ahead of its time. Sadly, the master copies of this
film and the two which followed it have been lost to the ravages of time. Only one VHS copy of it survived; so Channel 9 gave us
permission to convert it to digital video in an effort to preserve it as an archive for the use of posterity. This film inspired
Stan Deyo to write "The Cosmic Conspiracy" book which is the sequel to the shows. The man-made, flying saucer programs
are exposed in the book and the film. -
Recruited by the Illuminati, Stan Deyo was taken secretly to Australia in 1971 to design "flying saucer" propulsion
systems with them. Deyo reveals years later why "they" keep the alien/UFO agenda from the public. Many have investigated
this huge conspiracy from the outside looking in - BUT, only one has come forward from an insider's perspective. Stan Deyo's The

Robert
Temple -
The
first lecture of the day was given by Robert Temple, the author of the
seminal work THE SIRIUS MYSTERY and the soon to be published book THE
CRYSTAL SUN. - 14 more annotations...
-
-
He began by presenting a series of slides showing optical
lenses found in museums across the ancient world including the British
Museum. -
I was amazed at the sheer number that exist, showing clearly
that civilisations such as the Romans, Hellenic Greeks, Carthaginians,
Assyrians and Chinese were very much aware of this ancient technology. -
There were pictures of the famous lens found by Sir Henry Layard at
the palace of the Assyrian king Sargon at Nineveh in northern Iraq during
the nineteenth century. This example probably dates to the seventh century
BC. -
Robert explained that here was perhaps
the oldest evidence for crystal lens technology, dating back as far
as predynastic times, c. 3100 BC. -
I was
particularly intrigued by the lenses and microscopic carvings found
during excavations in Egypt. -
Once more this confirms the theory
that the Egyptians possessed technologies that are simply denied by
conventional Egyptologists. -
Robert
went on to display what is arguably the most remarkable of his discoveries
relating to crystal optics in ancient times. This is a Greek pot shard
that actually shows a male figure with a long, slightly conical tube
up against his left eye – the image that features on the cover of his
new book. -
As he pointed out, thousands of people file past this item
every day and yet no one has ever proposed that it is a telescope –
not even Erich von Daniken! -
I have to say that this is a very convincing
piece of evidence that defies any other explanation. Robert must be
applauded for bringing this artefact to the attention of the world. -
There
seems little question that lenses were used as early as 3100 BC to fashion
microscopic carvings in Egypt and that this tradition continued through
to at least the fall of the Roman empire. -
Moreover, there is every reason
to suggest that telescopes, perhaps made from dried plant stems such
as the giant hogweed, were used to observe the celestial and stellar
bodies in a manner not popular again until the Renaissance period. -
The
final section of Robert’s talk featured the relationship between channeling
light and religious buildings such as Egyptian temples and megalithic
monuments of Europe such as the passage grave at Newgrange in Ireland. -
Add Sticky NoteUnderstanding the properties of light in association with lenses, an
explanation perhaps of the story of Prometheus’ who drew down the divine
fire, seems to be the key to understanding the enigmas associated with
the veneration of the sun from Egypt to Greece and Persia. Lenses did
not just have a practical purpose but also a religious function that
focused the energy of the divine.- Was this technology part of the forbidden wisdom given to mankind by the fallen angels/Nephilim? - on 2009-01-17
-
From
the feedback of those who attended this lecture, it is clear that Robert
has uncovered a lost technology that is breathtaking in its implications
and I look forward to reading his much-awaited book THE CRYSTAL SUN,
published by Century on 18 May.

HOLLYWOOD—After
remaining in the top twenty books of its genre for the past three years, the
movie rights to Thomas and Nita Horn's white-knuckle thriller The Ahriman Gate
have been sold to an as-yet undisclosed Hollywood filmmaker. -
The agreement
provides the producer with the worldwide motion picture, television, and video
rights; rights in all other audio-visual mediums; motion picture distribution
rights in all territories; and certain merchandising rights. -
Buzz over The Ahriman Gate—which Entertainment
Magazine's Jim McDonald calls "a high energy thriller in the vein of
Dean Koontz and John Saul"—has steadily risen since the initial release
in 2005. -
"The book instantly became the publisher's biggest
seller and has resulted in hundreds of requests from anxious readers for a
sequel," says Publicist Susan Benson. -
"The book was written to include
the possibility of a follow-up, and now with the movie option, it makes sense to
move forward with the next book in the series." -
The working title for the new book is simply Ahriman
Gate II and is timed to be released shortly after the movie comes to the big
screen. -
The film adaptation is currently being drafted and the
producer's goal is to have the movie in theaters by late 2009. The budget for
the movie has been whispered at approximately 40 million dollars. -
The Ahriman Gate weaves
science and technology with biblical prophecy to illustrate how emerging fields
of science could be used to bring about the "end times." -
The clever
blend of scripture and biotechnology caused Randall Murphree of AgapePress and
AFA Journal to write, "It's fascinating fiction, and I sincerely
hope it is just that—fiction! Genetically modified creatures, spiritual
alien forces, a clandestine government research project, and a sinister
kidnapping—somehow, it all sounds too much like today's headlines. I
commend the Horns for a gripping narrative that sends chills down your
spine." -
Ghostwriter and novelist Donna Howell is joining the
Horn team in penning the sequel, and the publisher says it is "a match made
in heaven. All three of these writers are capable of extraordinarily edgy
suspense." -
The plot for the sequel is considered so sensitive that
the publisher claims it is literally being kept under lock and key. -
More than a dozen experts from science, technology, and
theology have provided an estimated three thousand pages of background material
for the new book's premise, which the authors promise will be "more true
than not, and the most frightening possibility that will ultimately challenge
what scholars think they know about the Mark of the Beast. -
You can forget issues
like implantable microchips. What we are working on has never been written
before and will absolutely shock people when it is published."

DARPA seeks 'perch and stare' spy-fly robot
-

-
-
Pentagon war-boffins have shelled out $4.6m to a noted aerial crazytech firm to develop a spy drone which can "perch" near a target, "stare" at it, then take off again and fly home.
-
Aerovironment Inc, already famous for such projects as the Helios solar-powered crewless wingship, the three-inch bugbot-thopter and the hydrogen strato-cruiser skyeye, was chuffed to announce the contract win yesterday.
-
One need hardly add that the cash comes from DARPA*, the US military boffin apparat whose early-afternoon dining policy is strictly extramural.
-
Aerovironment and DARPA refer to the desired perch'n'lurk mode as Stealthy Persistent Perch and Stare (SP2S), and intend to implement it starting with the existing winged Wasp machine.
-
(We would like to offer an alternative term for winged spydroids attaching themselves to buildings etc: "Gargoyle mode".)
-
“A UAS that performs hover/perch and stare missions is viewed as an important capability for our armed forces,” said Aerovironment dronebot chief John Grabowsky.
-
“Our production Wasp incorporates the latest technologies to provide a day and night capable, hand-launched UAS that fits into a standard backpack while still providing room for other important supplies.
-

The existing Wasp - soon with Gargoyle Mode.
-
the Wasp-based SP2S... is on track to develop into a portable, practical and affordable perch-and-stare micro air vehicle."
-
There's no hint as to just how the Wasp will manage to perch on things, nor quite what kind of landing areas Aerovironment have in mind.
-
There has previously been discussion of methods which might allow such drones to snare power or phone lines and hang from them like bats (perhaps even harvesting electricity from them, in the case of power lines - or tapping into phone lines, good lord).
-
This would seem to offer an option to drop away again afterwards for the return flight, if the wire were high enough.
-
Alternatively, Aerovironment's Puma drone already has a landing mode in which it pitches up sharply into a full stall just above its chosen landing spot, so dropping to a stationary landing just where it wants to without any forward speed.
-
A normal plane would destroy itself doing this, but the small tough Puma can survive such landings without damage. This apparently allows a landing on a very small area, such that the new modified Wasp might be able to set down on small ledges or other suitable perch points.
-
Getting off again afterwards could be a bit of an issue, however, as would be the effective use of onboard cameras after such a "perch" crash landing.
-
A clue may be offered in Aerovironment's language, in which it is said that the new gargoyle-mode Wasp will be "capable of flying to difficult targets, landing on and securing to a 'perch' position".

Micheal Heiser's presentation answers the following questions:
1.) What Were the "Sons of God" and what was the nature of their relationships?
2.) Is their a relationship between the sending of the flood and the hybridization?
3.) Who were the Nephilim, and are they distinct from the "Sons of God?"
4.) Is there a relationship between genesis 6 and genesis 3?
5.)How is the idea of giants explained in the ancient Jewish traditions?
6.) Did ancient people believe in hybridized offspring? Did the take Gen 6 literally?
7.) Does the word Nephilim mean Giants?
Heiser also spends some time on the debunking of Zechariah Sitchin and Sir Lawrence Gardner. -

Damaging treaties (GATT, NAFTA, etc.) created the massive loss of jobs in our country via outsourcing and the erosion of our industries.
-
America has been minimized as a strong nation and castrated as a super power.
- 98 more annotations...
-
-
Jobs have been given to illegal immigrants in our country or sent overseas to India and China and other nations.
-
Americans struggle financially as the Elitists lower us to third world status.
-
Illegal immigration is just one of their schemes for running the world.
-
19. Crimes:
-
A society frightened of being murdered, raped, beaten, held hostage, hijacked, or kidnapped, or victims of vehicular deaths, road rage, and "suicided," among other abominable offenses, is a society wailing for security, in spite of lost rights.
-
This, then, is just one more method of cuckolding us into ceding our rights to Big Brother.
-
The ICC (International Criminal Court) was created to imprison people of different cultures, including Americans.
-
The protection of hard core, guilty criminals is also symptomatic of a failing country.
-
The Powers keep us in a state of trepidation over terrorism—real or contrived—and cause us to cede our freedoms for protection.
-
20. Terrorism:
-
2001's 9/11 caused a major breakdown of the U.S. Constitution, the infringement of rights and policies through Homeland Security, the Patriot Act, biochips, and soon-to-come Martial Law;
-
hence, the concentration camps for those who balk against the Police State or promote dissension.
-
21. Slavery and Prostitution:
-
Many people, especially younger ones, are rounded up in clandestine ways and are forced into slavery or prostitution.
-
They may be stolen during the night, taken coming and going from school, or whisked off in parking lots.
-
They are often earmarked by the Powers who want young maidens or lads to "entertain" visiting dignitaries or foreign VIPs who abuse the kids and sell them to slave masters, pimps, and other black market factions.
-
Some researchers believe that these missing people have even been sacrificed in satanic rituals.
-
22. Genocide is a method for wiping out an entire society for depopulation purposes, for government gain, for eliminating enemies, for creating a super race by purging traits deemed negative.
-
Genocide, then, is an effective way for the Elite to sort out which people they want and which they don’t; it gets rid of the unwanted in one fell swoop.
-
Some of their methods include random extermination (holocausts) and heinous atrocities, creating insurrections to kill off a religious or racial group, and holocausts.
-
The Illuminati’s power shores them up to decide who the next president or prime minister will be, who will receive grants and government funding, and anything else that affect us on a personal and national level.
-
23. Decision Makers:
-
Bacteria and viruses can be released during either war or peace time to create a chaos and a demand for protection that would help the powers to achieve their mission of globalism;
-
24. Diseases:
-
bio-warfare can be reserved for combat when the substances are unleashed on enemies.
-
Besides using bacteria in germ warfare, they also test substances on humans, some unknowingly.
-
The introduction of HIV, the rise of once eliminated childhood diseases, biochem warfare, and the growing number of unknown bacterial and viral diseases are representative of their manipulations.
-
They can put substances into drinking water; they’ve introduced cell phones knowing the dangers of cancer; and they’ve used microwaves and other technologies against us, as well as various forms of experimentation.
-
25. Computerization/Technology:
-
The Elite have many classified means of controlling us, though some are still in the trial stages.
-
Consider nanochips (teeny tiny robots can be placed in humans to control them), robotic reproduction (the ability of robots and computers to reproduce),
-
and GTWA (Global Technology World Alliance which is a secret society developing and working with advanced technology to achieve control and denomination of international supremacy and economics.
-
Bluetooth, Wii and other high-tech tools, along with laser and advanced weaponry (stun guns, particle beams) are also tools for fully establishing the NWO.
-
The Elite have secret labs and black ops; yet, they won’t support scientists and researchers who create inventions or medications for the good of mankind.
-
Whether truly from another planet or invented by the government, they can be used to instill paralyzing dread in us if they tell us that an invasion is real. Quickly we would give up all our rights to be protected from enemies.
-
26. UFOs:
-
27. Economy:
-
In order for the Elite to completely take over the world, they have to capture the economic sector to create a one-world economy, as seen in the collapse of the American dollar, along with merging the U.S., Canada and America into one of the ten regions.
-
These ten regions each will have a representative on a governing panel, with one member emerging as a dictator.
-
Elitists manipulate the stock market and all other monetary resources; they own the Federal Reserve, and control all international currencies, determining what your paycheck will be worth.
-
Many of the other ten regions have already been set up.
-
From the moment the Powers decided to use left-wing feminism as a way to cause resentment between men and women and their children, is the moment when the institution of marriage faltered.
-
28. Feminism and Working Mothers:
-
Two incomes gave Mom and Dad the false sense that they had money, and thus materialism also seeped into our lives at the same time.
-
The role of males has been re-defined and belittled.
-
Most damaging for American citizens is the UN which strives to undermine our country, reduce our spending power, eliminate our freedoms, lower us to third world status, make us pay for other countries’ problems, and rape of us of everything that once made us powerful.
-
29. UN:
-
Doing this allows the NWO to weaken the most prevailing muscle in the world so that we have no strength to fight any of their programs.
-
30. Confiscation of Rights:
-
The NWO Elitists can’t fully stage their takeover until our country is disarmed, as an armed citizenry can fight back. The day they take our guns is the total end of our sovereignty and our country.
-
31. Secret societies serve to unite the Elitists in their demise of our nation and the installation of a global government via their networking force and underground operations, as well as control over religious, educational and corporate systems.
-
They will never admit that these societies exist and that they are the muscle behind the authority.
-
Symbolism is one facet of them, and they use newspapers, radio airwaves, and TV to subliminally pass messages to one another.
-
The government and their counterparts are most adept in brainwashing techniques using a litany of resources, such as drugs (MKUltra, LSD), projects (Project Monarch, Phoenix), propaganda (constant bombardment of untruths and omissions by the media), cults/programming (groups giving up their individuality and blindly following some unstable leader), and video games, rock music, violence and witchcraft on TV, such as Harry Potter.
-
32. Mind Control:
-
Societies have agents and sleepers everywhere.
-
Even works of fine art are polluted with vulgarity and crude innuendos.
-
The Illuminati own all the major media in print, television, radio, music, and theater. They create conglomerates and monopolies. Doing this gives them control over everything we watch, read, and listen to.
-
33. Media Mergers:
-
CIA drugs and arm smuggling, bought politicians, undercover dealings, disinformation, lies and distortions, blackmail, constant deceptions are all part of their bid for a one world government.
-
34. Corrupt Government:
-
Disinformation is a major means of confusing us, which they do through false media reports, chain letters, the articles they place on the internet, and the rumors they start.
-
35. Lack of Missile Defense:
-
While other countries are building their arsenals, we’re minimizing ours. Disarmament and the decline of our militia, and thus our ability to defend ourselves, certainly mean defeat even before a conflict breaks out.
-
An unarmed America is akin to a fire in a theater with no exits.
-
Our military lacks the self-confidence, the manpower, the equipment and the technology needed to fight opposing forces, and is compromised in morality and morale through unnecessary wars that are not intended to be won.
-
36. Decline of Military:
-
EOs (Executive Orders), PDs (Presidential Directives), and PDDs (Presidential Decision Directives) have become so amorphous and customary that no one cares when a new one is enacted.
-
37. Passing of EOs:
-
This is an Illuminati tactic to proceed with their personal agendas without first obtaining congressional approval; thus allowing extreme orders to be written that would prove detrimental to the general public.
-
For example, a single EO could dissolve the entire United States.
-
38. Infiltration:
-
The Illuminati use subtlety to invade churches, schools, corporations, small businesses, organizations, and everything else, and implant their ideology and philosophy of a one-world government through well honed issues, such as global warming.
-
They have their "people" (often members of their secret societies) placed throughout these entities who make decisions beneficial to the Elitists.
-
One of the most effective means for the Powers to gain control and implement their global rule is through regional government where they give mandates to mayors and municipal managers via documents on how matters must be handled. Law enforcement, attorneys and judges are part of the scenario.
-
39. Regional Government:
-
False or deliberate crises work to scare us and allow the Illuminists to achieve their goals, such as re-designing New Orleans to their desire, or going to Iraq for oil and the take-over of their banks for the Federal Reserve.
-
Whether actual or devised, crises "seem real" to us.
-
40. Created or Contrived Crises:
-
Examples include global warming, the energy crisis, floods, hurricanes (they can control the weather), and any other disaster they desire.
-
In summary, the Elitists use these approaches among others to bring about their New World Order or global government.
-
The Inner Circle and their octopus arms suck in prey smaller than they to conquer, and will resort to any method of getting what they want.
-
They have planned long and hard, covering all their bases, and devised ingenious ways to conquer us. Be on guard.
-
Our hope of overcoming them lies in the schisms they create among themselves, their ongoing feuding and power fight for the top position along with empowering ourselves with knowledge of what they do.
-
That, they can’t take away from us and we can use against them.

Transhumanism and the Posthuman Future: Will Technological Progress Get Us There? :: Ted Peters :: Global Spiral
metanexus.net/...Default.aspx - Preview
niebuhr ellul theologians technology transhumanists god future adventus futurum bible christian humanists sin progress
-
“What if the new man combines the animal irrationality of primitive man with the calculated greed and power-lust of industrial man, while possessing the virtually Godlike powers granted him by technology? This would be the ultimate horror.”55
-
Now, just how is this relevant to our analysis of the transhumanist project?
- 98 more annotations...
-
-
Note two things: first, note the false assumption that technological progress has a built in direction or purpose, false because it fails to recognize the split between progress and value; second, note the close alliance between transhumanist progress and free market capitalism.
-
The values allegedly inherent within evolution and progress will not be able to sustain themselves in the face of the pressure to serve the demands of the funders. Money talks. What money says goes.
-
No way exists to liberate technological progress from the vested interests of the economic and political powers which make such progress possible.
-
Despite their feeble whisperings of liberal values such as altruism, cooperation, and ecology, the progress transhumanists anticipate will be unavoidably pressed into the service of consolidating and expanding the wealth of its investors.
-
Does Technology De-Humanize Us?
-
Chief Scientist of Sun Microsystems Bill Joy opened the twenty-first century with a prophetic essay, “Why the Future Doesn’t Need Us.” Can we imagine a future in which we, members of the human race as we know it, will be no longer?
-
Will downloading our intelligence into a machine threaten the continuance of or humanity?
-
“But if we are downloaded into our technology,” Joy asks, “what are the chances that we will thereafter be ourselves or even human?”56
-
The transformation of the natural world around us along with the transformation of ourselves into something new that surpasses us raises the question: will the kind of technological progress advocated by transhumanists actually de-humanize us? Would such a dehumanization be due to this specific technological proposal, or is it due to the very nature of technique itself?
-
Watching the incorporation of technique into human self-understanding has alarmed both theologians and secular humanists for half a century now.
-
Some fear that technology applied to the inner life de-humanizes us, that it cuts us off from our otherwise spontaneous joy at being natural creatures. “Technique is opposed to nature,” writes French social critic and Reformed theologian Jacques Ellul. “It destroys, eliminates, or subordinates the natural world, and does not allow this world to restore itself or even to enter into a symbiotic relation with it.”57
-
Now, Ellul’s pitting human nature in opposition to technique is a bit extreme; because most anthropologies would affirm that the pursuit of technological innovation is one of the obvious attributes of human nature. We are homo faber, the species that makes things.
-
So, the threat of dehumanization comes not from technological advance per se; rather, the threat comes from our temptation to so identify with our technological production that we forget our relationship to the natural world.
-
In order to protect us from such forgetfulness, Ferkiss proposes a new norm: “man is part of nature and therefore cannot be its conqueror and indeed he owes it some respect.”58
-
Just how it is that technology threatens our humanity is subtle. On the one hand, transhumanists propose a technology that will enhance our humanity, at least the intelligent aspect of humanity.
-
On the other hand, once technology takes over and replicates itself, it will leave our present stage of humanity in the evolutionary dust.
-
An emerging posthumanity will replace us. We might ask: if we replace ourselves with posthumanity, will we have given expression to our essential human potential for self-transcendence through technology? Just how should we think about this?
-
If yesterday’s futurists could speak to today’s challenge, they would most likely warn us of tendencies within us to surrender what is human to the mindset of technique.
-
“While it is untrue that technology determines the future independently of human volition, there is no question that that human individuals and human society are increasingly under pressure to conform to the demands of technological efficiency, and there is a real possibility that the essence of humanity will be lost in the process, that human history will come to an end and be converted into a mere prelude to the history of a posthuman society in which machines rather than men rule.”59
-
Ferkiss admonishes us to avoid this pitfall. “Man must maintain the distinction between himself and the machines of his creation....not only must man stand above the machine, he must be in control of his own evolution.”60
-
Almost presciently anticipating today’s proposal to create a posthuman intelligence, Ferkiss declares that we should preserve our humanness; we should maintain today’s humanity over against the temptation to replace it with something more advanced. “Man’s greatest need is not to transcend his species as such but to develop it fully...
-
Man is not a superape; he is no longer an ape at all. Before we abandon man for a machine-man or a genetic mutant, we should learn what he can do in his present form once liberated from hunger, fear, and ignorance.”61

Perhaps Ferkiss the humanist would represent the religious road block the transhumanists would like to clear out of the way.
-
Now, this observation that we human beings belong to nature and are embedded in nature is important, to be sure; yet this is not the point I would like to stress here. What is more important to the present analysis is the naive sense of control or false sense of dominance that technological victories over nature might elicit.
-
University of Chicago theologian David Tracy alerts us to the dangers of sacrificing our better judgment to naive trust in technological progress.
-
“Now techne becomes the productof the will to domination, power and control...a power on its own, leveling all culture; annihilating all at-home-ness in the cosmos, uprooting all other questions in favor of those questions under its control; producing a planetary thought-world where instrumental reason, and it alone, will pass as thought.... The object cannot think. The subject will not. We began as technical agents of our willful destiny. We seem to end as technicized spectators at our own execution.”62

The Theological Critique of Progress
-
The assignment given me by the conference leadership is to examine the concept of progress underlying the transhumanist vision, and to look at it from the distinctive perspective of a Lutheran theologian.
-
For resources, I will turn to a theological subtradition which is not exclusively Lutheran but which relies upon Luther’s Reformation insights into human nature. This is the neo-orthodox school of theological thinking which reigned during the middle of the twentieth century.
-
One key figure was Reinhold Niebuhr, long time professor of social thought at Union Seminary in New York, along with one of his disciples, Langdon Gilkey, the late professor of theology at the University of Chicago.
-
In the tradition of Augustine and Luther, they proffered a version of “Christian realism” regarding the sinful condition in which we human beings find ourselves; and they cautioned against overestimating what we can achieve within history apart from the gracious action of God.
-
In his writings during the 1930s and 1940s, Niebuhr shows awareness that our modern Post-Enlightenment culture which plays host to both natural science and European imperialism is a branch growing on a larger historical tree.
-
The tree’s trunk stands with roots in classical Greece and Rome, as well as in the soil of Israel’s history and the Christian Bible.
-
The modern idea of progress, he avers, is both an outgrowth and a pruned version of biblical eschatology.
-
The prophets and the apocalypticists of Scripture saw human history as dynamic, as changing, as moving from promise to fulfillment. But human advance is also subject to divine judgment. What this means is that all events within history are ambiguous—that is, the advance of each human potential can lead to either a good actualization or an evil actualization.
-
Unambiguous goodness is not guaranteed by progress.
-
Only eschatologically—only at the advent of God’s Kingdom which will come by an act of divine grace—will unambiguous fulfillment be possible. In the meantime, we live in the paradox of being able to envision fulfillment while experiencing the inescapable dialectic of success and failure.
-
“The idea of progress is the underlying presupposition of what may be broadly defined as ‘liberal’ culture.
-
If that assumption is challenged the whole structure of meaning in the liberal world is imperiled....The creed is nevertheless highly dubious....It is false in so far as all historical processes are ambiguous.”63
-
The ambiguity of which Niebuhr speaks is the ever present potential created by human freedom, namely, the potential to choose evil and chaos as well as what is good and fulfilling.
-
The problem is that today’s believers in progress are blind to this ambiguity.
-
They trust that inherent to the progress of history is a built-in logos or guiding principle that transforms otherwise meaningless growth into a process of betterment. This belief is a truncation of the biblical eschatology which preceded it. It is an outgrowth of the effect of Scripture on Western culture, to be sure; but the concept of progress prunes off this growth the previous recognition of the ineluctable continuation of creative evil.
-
“The ‘idea of progress,’ the most characteristic and firmly held article in the credo of modern man, is the inevitable philosophy of history emerging from the Renaissance. This result was achieved by combining the classical confidence in man with the Biblical confidence in the meaningfulness of history.
-
It must be observed, however, that history is given a simpler meaning than that envisaged in the prophetic-Biblical view...[Progress] did not recognize that history is filled with endless possibilities of good and evil...It did not recognize that every new human potency may be an instrument of chaos as well as of order; and that history, therefore, has no solution of its own problem.”64
-
We moderns have inherited the optimism of the Renaissance while tacitly rejecting the realism regarding human nature given us by the Reformation.
-
A sinner in need of divine grace was the starting point of Reformation anthropology, a starting point quickly forgotten during our eras of science building and nation building.
-
“Original sin really means that human nature has completely fallen,” writes Reformer Martin Luther. “The intellect has become darkened, so that we no longer know God and His will...our conscience is no longer quiet but, when it thinks of God’s judgment, despairs and adopts illicit defenses and remedies. These sins have taken such deep root in our being that in this life they cannot be entirely eradicated.”65
-
We are soiled by sin, so to speak. No amount of progress will wash it away. “Sin remains, then, perpetually in this life, until the hour of the last judgment comes and then at last we shall be made perfectly righteous.”66
-
No amount of human intelligence, wit, will power, creativity, reform, or revolution can enable us to dig ourselves out of this hole. We are unable to transform ourselves. Only God can deliver us.
-
Now, says Niebuhr, without this acknowledgement of who we are as human beings, we will find ourselves with something less than a purchase on the reality of our situation. “This tragic aspect of history, towards which the Renaissance was partly oblivious, was precisely that aspect of history which the Reformation most fully comprehended.
-
This comprehension is contained in the Reformation polemic against all doctrines of sanctification, whether Catholic, secular or sectarian-Christian, in which it detects a too-simple confidence in historical possibilities.
-
Its doctrine of ‘justification by faith’ contains implications for an adequate interpretation of history which have never been fully appropriated or exploited...”67 No historical ideology or scientific technology can possibly provide us with unambiguous sanctification—that is, unambiguous improvement let alone perfection. Failure to realize this leaves us in unreality.
-
Realism requires an accurate portrayal of the human situation.
-
This ever present risk of sinful activity is a universal contingent—that is, though unnecessary it is always and everywhere possible.
-
At any time and in any place, otherwise happy and fulfilled human beings may initiate evil and destruction.
-
At the birth of the computer age, we should have been able to predict the coming of the computer virus, or something like it. Now, at the birth of transhumanist technology, similar predictions would be in order.
-
“Sin is natural for man in the sense that it is universal but not in the sense that it is necessary.”68
-
When it comes to spiritual health, the realism of Luther’s Reformation becomes Niebuhr’s prescription.
-
Niebuhr structures the insights of the Reformation paradoxically, so that they shine with a double dimensional illumination upon our experience.
-
Here is Niebuhr’s list of “the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ of its dialectical affirmations: that the Christian is justus et peccator, ‘both sinner and righteous’; that history fulfills and negates the Kingdom of God; that grace is continuous with, and in contradiction to, nature; that Christ is what we ought to be and also what we cannot be; that the power of God is in us and that the power of God is against us in judgment and mercy; that all these affirmations which are but varied forms of the one central paradox of the relation of the Gospel to history must be applied to the experiences of life, from top to bottom.
-
There is no area of life where ‘grace’ does not impinge.”69 Because of who we human beings are, subject to sin, our fulfillment will require gracious divine action on our behalf. The good news of the Christian gospel is that God promises us such grace.
-
Progress Under Judgment
-
The core worry of the Christian theologian here is the naiveté with which believers in progress remove the ambiguities of human history, with which they maintain confidence in the good that progress can bring while denying the potential growth of evil.
-
What the theologian ought to steadfastly maintain is that our vision of human abundance and human flowering must hold on to its transcendence; we must hold on to the judgment that the eschatological kingdom of God renders against the accomplishments of human history.
-
“There is a great temptation today to confuse sociological evolution with spiritual progress,” writes Jacques Ellul. “The Bible expressly tells us that the history of mankind ends in judgment.”70
-
That Christian reliance upon a transcendent judgment against human history is a necessary antidote to the naiveté of faith in progress seems confirmed by events during the first half of the twentieth century.
-
Technological and even cultural advance in the European West were insufficient to prevent political tyranny, mass genocide, and global war.
-
Langdon Gilkey recites the litany of events that confirmed the need for seeing a dialectic between immanent progress and God’s transcendent kingdom. “In the First World War—despite the refinement of European culture and the moral idealism of that culture’s self-understanding—Europe experienced the apparent self-destruction of this most modern and developed of societies in a prolonged and senseless bath of blood.
-
In the Depression and its aftermath, the West as a whole experienced the self-contradiction of its economic forms, and the consequent rise of fascist and communist totalitarianisms that dissolved the hard-won political freedoms of modernity.
-
And in the Second World War, with its slavery, genocide and technology of ultimate destruction, the world experienced an eruption of technological and sophisticated evil: personal, political and social, unknown to history before. History seemed to manifest demonic regress not progress in the social, political and moral realms.”71
-
“It seemed the obvious lesson of current events that morals do not advance in history.
-
Hence, a progress of technology may in fact augur a regress in social harmony and social justice, and thus all that is cumulative, instead of ‘saving’ mankind, can threaten to become the demonic instrument of mankind’s destruction.
-
This permanent ambiguity of historical process, this continuation of sin even in an advancing culture, meant that if there be a kingdom, it could not be realized through a sociohistorical development leading to a perfect society in history.”72
-
When considering our evolutionary history and technological future, what direction should a realistic anthropology follow?
-
Paul Jersild, in a recent article on science and faith, points a cautious way. “In some respects, a more civilized society does emerge with the evolution of cultures, but there is ample evidence that evolving societies invent still more horrific ways to exalt themselves and destroy their neighbors. Evolution, whether biological or cultural, does not mean inexorable progress on the road toward perfection.”73 In sum, we should move forward, but we should not presume progress in every respect is inevitable or guaranteed.
-
Conclusion
-
It is my conclusion that members of the transhumanist school of thought are naive about human nature; and they are overestimating what they can accomplish through technological innovation.
-
They are naive because they take insufficient account of the propensity we human beings have for using neutral things or even good things for selfish purposes, resulting in chaos and suffering.
-
The assumption transhumanists seem to make that both biological evolution and technological progress have their own built in entelechy or purpose from which we can derive our social ethic overlooks the threat to their values posed by the funders.
-
The result will be technological advances that benefit the investors to the detriment of the wider society and the ecosphere they would like to rehabilitate.
-
The forecast of a future replete with cybernetic immortality and cosmic consciousness seems extravagant and fantastic. Whether it is possible for our intelligence and self-consciousness to be reduced to information patterns and then uploaded on to a non-biological substrate is not a question I can address here. But I would like to point out that there is no warrant for believing that all our human problems will be solved by transhumanist technology.
-
There is no warrant for thinking that the currently selfish human race will be able to transform itself into an altruistic or benevolent one. There is no warrant for thinking that we human beings with our history of economic injustice and ecologically unhealthy habits are willing or able, on our own, to eliminate poverty and protect the ecosphere.
-
No amount of increased intelligence will redeem us from what the theologians call sin.
-
I call this the eschatological problem.
-
What transhumanists are hoping for is adventus, but they have only futurum to work with.
-
God has promised some of what appears in the transhumanist vision. But the transformation of the human heart so that it exudes benevolence and justice requires divine grace.
-
The advent of the new creation will require much more than what our evolutionary history by itself can deliver. It will require God’s transforming power.
-
Increased human intelligence cannot on its own accomplish what it will take divine grace to make happen.
-
One more observation. I would like to point out that this near apocalyptic vision projected by the transhumanists includes some elements which appear irreconcilable with the biblical promise of a new creation.
-
The biblical promise begins with Jesus’ Easter resurrection as a model. This includes suffering and death, complete death. It also includes a divine act of raising the dead to new life. What happened to Jesus is what will happen to us. NRS 1 Corinthians 15:20: “ But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.”
-
The New Testament does not look forward to living forever in our present state; rather, it presumes we will pass through death to the new life God promises. Eternal life is not the same thing as extended life.
-
The picture of cybernetic immortality painted by the transhumanists does not look like the Bible’s promise of resurrection.
-
Even if genetic enhancement and nanotechnology are able to increase human longevity or even lead to cybernetic immortality, the uploaded self-consciousness will still need to pass through the purgatorial cleansing of death and resurrection.
-
Apart from the fulfillment of this promise, the future of human history will remain like its past, ambiguous.
-
Finally, a Christian theologian can only encourage continued scientific research into genetics and nanotechnology when the goals are improved human health and well-being.
-
Attempts to enhance human intelligence through technological augmentation might also be greeted with approval, although probably not with overwhelming enthusiasm.
-
Because the theologian looks forward to the advent of divine transformation, he or she can celebrate anticipatory transformations brought by advances in science and technology. Biblical theology need not be recalcitrant or Luddite.
-
Biblical theology can be ready to celebrate technological breakthroughs while remaining realistic about what to expect from human nature.
