(WSB Radio) State wildlife officials are on the lookout for what might be an unusual prowling predator in Hall County.
-
"Several of the reports described, not a mountain lion but what people seem to think was an African lion," says Scott Frazier, wildlife biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
That's right. There may be a lion loose in Hall County.
-
"We found some consistency in those reports," Frazier tells WSB. "So we went there and set some traps but didn't catch anything."

There has not been a sighting of a wild mountain lion in Georgia since 1973, so Frazier discounts the possibility that this is a natural occurrence .

But, he thinks there is some possibility that this could, in fact, be a lion from Africa.

"Any big cat report now, bigger than a bobcat, we first think of illegal pets, illegal importation, escaped animal from a facility," says Frazier.

The first sightings were in May, four in all. The witnesses all described the same type of animal, in the same general area.

"The reports were geographically close by, and, on a timeline, they was enough time for one animal to get from Point A to Point B," Frazier says. "And the descriptions that people gave of the animal were consistent between the four reports."

Since word first got out of a possible lion in Hall County, Frazier says his office has been inundated with calls, with descriptions varying, locations all over the map and people telling wild tales, all of which has made the search for the lion more difficult.

"After the original reports and story, it's been a mismash of reports," Frazier says.

"We did have a horse killed and the big cat was suspected. We did have a cow attacked and the big cat was suspected."

Frazier says there are reasons to doubt whether there is, in fact, a lion on the prowl.

A few years back, two Florida panthers traveled into Georgia, separately.
"They were collared, radio tagged animals,' he says. "It was part of their work down there with the endangered cats.

"In both instances, people immediately began seeing those cats," says Frazier. "And, in both instances, those cats were ultimately shot within two weeks of being in Georgia."

Those sightings lead to skepticism from Frazier over the current reports.

"When I think about how quickly that occurred," Frazier says, "and then the potential that we have another cat that's out there now that nobody can produce a picture of and nobody runs over with a car and nobody shoots, um, it seems unlikely."

But Frazier admits, right now, officials with the DNR just aren't sure.

CatDNR does not want to admit it but there are mountain lions in Georgia!! I saw one and know of a couple other people that have seen one. And NO it was not a bobcat!! I didn't think to get a picture of it because I was so shocked at what I was seeing.

A woman owned several wild cats two of which were female lions and she would let them hunt at night in a rural area and people's pets were disappearing.

They were sighted several times and the woman claimed she got rid of them after the council made retroactive laws regarding these types of animals but there were hundreds of acres around her home, who knows what she really did with them. This was made the news in Columbia in 2002 or 2003.

My experience...I've seen the big panther cat, but no lions. I now take my camera everywhere I go, and am afraid to be in the woods at night without a gun.

The conventional view of human evolution and how early man colonised the world has been thrown into doubt by a series of stunning palaeontological discoveries suggesting that Africa was not the sole cradle of humankind.

Scientists have found a handful of ancient human skulls at an archaeological site two hours from the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, that suggest a Eurasian chapter in the long evolutionary story of man.

Experts believe fossilised bones unearthed at the medieval village of Dmanisi in the foothills of the Caucuses, and dated to about 1.8 million years ago, are the oldest indisputable remains of humans discovered outside of Africa.

But what has really excited the researchers is the discovery that these early humans (or "hominins") are far more primitive-looking than the Homo erectus humans that were, until now, believed to be the first people to migrate out of Africa about 1 million years ago.

The Dmanisi people had brains that were about 40 per cent smaller than those of Homo erectus and they were much shorter in stature than classical H. erectus skeletons, according to Professor David Lordkipanidze, general director of the Georgia National Museum.

"Before our findings, the prevailing view was that humans came out of Africa almost 1 million years ago, that they already had sophisticated stone tools, and that their body anatomy was quite advanced in terms of brain capacity and limb proportions. But what we are finding is quite different," Professor Lordkipanidze said.

"The Dmanisi hominins are the earliest representatives of our own genus – Homo – outside Africa, and they represent the most primitive population of the species Homo erectus to date. They might be ancestral to all later Homo erectus populations, which would suggest a Eurasian origin of Homo erectus."

Speaking at the British Science Festival in Guildford, where he gave the British Council lecture, Professor Lordkipanidze raised the prospect that Homo erectus may have evolved in Eurasia from the more primitive-looking Dmanisi population and then migrated back to Africa to eventually give rise to our own species, Homo sapiens – modern man.

"The question is whether Homo erectus originated in Africa or Eurasia, and if in Eurasia, did we have vice-versa migration? This idea looked very stupid a few years ago, but today it seems not so stupid," he told the festival.

"They are quite small. Their lower limbs are very human and their upper limbs are still quite archaic and they had very primitive stone tools," Professor Lordkipanidze said.

The scientists have discovered a total of five skulls and a solitary jawbone.

The only human fossil to predate the Dmanisi specimens are of an archaic species Homo habilis, or "handy man", found only in Africa, which used simple stone tools and lived between about 2.5 million and 1.6 million years ago.

"I'd have to say, if we'd found the Dmanisi fossils 40 years ago, they would have been classified as Homo habilis because of the small brain size.

Their brow ridges are not as thick as classical Homo erectus, but their teeth are more H. erectus like," Professor Lordkipanidze said.

"All these finds show that the ancestors of these people were much more primitive than we thought.

I don't think that we were so lucky as to have found the first travellers out of Africa.

Georgia is the cradle of the first Europeans, I would say," he told the meeting.

"What we learnt from the Dmanisi fossils is that they are quite small – between 1.44 metres to 1.5 metres tall. What is interesting is that their lower limbs, their tibia bones, are very human-like so it seems they were very good runners," he said.

While the Dmanisi people were almost modern in their body proportions, and were highly efficient walkers and runners, their arms moved in a different way, and their brains were tiny compared to ours.

"Nevertheless, they were sophisticated tool makers with high social and cognitive skills," he told the science festival, which is run by the British Science Association.

One of the five skulls is of a person who lost all his or her teeth during their lifetime but had still survived for many years despite being completely toothless. This suggests some kind of social organisation based on mutual care, Professor Lordkipanidze said.

I spoke with the witness who is a 20 year veteran public service officer.
-
He stated that the thing that was the most disconcerting was how strong the scream was and the accompanying "ape" sounding grunts.

He felt that there were two animals in the woods behind his house.

When he yelled back, the animals sounded like they began to move closer
-
As he felt threatened, he quickly moved into his house.
-
He has not seen or heard anything similar since.
-
This area is within the same subdivision as report #14887 and occurred during the same time period.

There were several incidents in this section of Paulding County during the time that this particular witness experienced the aggressive behavior.
-
The sasquatch that was observed and encountered multiple times during this period was particularly confrontational to the humans it encountered, and its intimidation strategy seemed to help it move through the populated area.
-
The rash of sightings and encounters during this brief period (some of which are published on this website), and the credibility of these witnesses (retired military, police officers, etc.) strongly supports the hypothesis that one or more sasquatches were passing through the area during that time.

There is no secret to the fact that the ridicule curtain is lowered a bit every October, and that creature stories are actively pursued by the media as the calendar nears Halloween.

But who would have guessed that an old “Devil Monkey” case would be revealed in 2009?
-
Cryptozoological topics, naturally, are good ones to investigate this time of year for local newspaper writers, and sometimes little known ones are discovered.

One such subject popped up this week in the guise of the “Belt Road Booger.” (Booger is a local Southern word for a strange creature, an unknown animal, a ghostly figure, and/or a haunt.)

eff Bishop wrote the 2009 story for The Times-Herald, for his little town in the bottomlands.
-
The Newnan Herald was Georgia’s first newspaper after Civil War, and the outcome, The Times-Herald, which was started as a sideline by two Newnan (Coweta County, Georgia) lawyers in the days after the Civil War ended, has existed now for 143 years.

Bishop, digging in the archives, found a thirty-year old series of stories that seemed appropriate for the weeks before Halloween.

In old issues of The Times-Herald, the reporter stumbled across front-page articles with headlines like the one dated August 9, 1979, “Strange Creature Seen Here.”
“Move over, Sasquatch, Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman and the Loch Ness Monster — make room for the Belt Road Booger!” the story screamed.

Bishop wrote:
Several sightings of a “monster” sighted on Belt Road near the intersection of West Washington Street were reported that week.
-
“It was dark. It stands about five feet tall. It’s big across the chest. Its eyes look like diamonds at night when you shine a light on them,” was how one local woman described the “monster.”

The creature was reported to have “a face like a monkey and a long bushy tail.”
-
The Newnan Police Department investigated the incident but found nothing.
-
The creature was “alleged to have eaten the inside of an apple, leaving only the peeling, and to have bitten a hunk out of an ear of corn.” It was also supposed to have climbed into a barn in the neighborhood, and some local children speculated that he slept in some junked cars in the woods near Belt Road.

The Belt Road Booger was spotted again in the Meadowview subdivision near Arnco, described by one local resident as “the ugliest looking thing I’ve ever seen.”

She described the animal as standing between 4 and 5 feet tall, and it was covered with black hair and a tail “like a beaver’s, but it’s bushy,” with “a face like a dog.”
She said the creature dug into her flowers and tried to kill her calladiums.

Sightings were reported in the following weeks in the Smokey Road and Ishman Ballard Road areas, and then later at Sargent. Then reports began to become less frequent, and the Belt Road Booger was seemingly forgotten.

Bishop found that sightings appeared to return in April 2005, with the re-naming of the thing seen as the “Happy Valley Horror.”

An avid hunter and outdoorsman, very familiar with local wildlife described “an enormous … very hairy” beast walking upright in a field on Happy Valley Circle. He thought it was Bigfoot.

Then in August 2005, a skeptical Happy Valley Circle resident, Donna Robards, told of how her family saw the creatures in late August 2005. They described them as “big and hairy and walking upright,” but it wasn’t a bear “because the face was flat and didn’t have a snout like a bear.”

On August 25, a pair was seen, with the larger of the two creatures being 8 feet tall and covered with coarse black hair. The other was a foot shorter and its hair was reddish-brown in color.

In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the creature’s initial appearance, The Times-Herald appears to be gathering new stories and planning an update.

Clearly, the “dog-faced” case from 1979 is different than the sightings from 2005.
-
For hominologists, these stories fit into the diverse context of the “Devil Monkeys” reports from the South.

The tail and head, of course, in the 1979 accounts, speak to something other than an ape or your typical Bigfoot described four years ago. But reports like these are nothing new.
-
One case summarized in my field guide involves a “giant monkey” encounter in June 1953, in the Gosainkund Pass, Nepal.

George Moore, M.D. and his companion, George K. Brooks, came face to face with what they took to be Abominable Snowmen, while they were on a medical mission in the area.

Of course, Yetis don’t have long tails, but then normal monkeys aren’t man-sized and walk towards you in a misty valley in Nepal, either.

The Moore-Brooks sighting, a strange story indeed, involved two credible eyewitnesses. It remains a mystery of the Himalayas, as much as the Belt Road Booger is in Georgia.

In the years that followed, Holliday had many more such disagreements, fueled by a hot temper and an attitude that death by gun or knife was better than by tuberculosis.

Further, there was the practical matter that a professional gambler, working on his own at the edge of the law, had to be able to back up disputed points of play with at least a threat of force.

Holliday was in Denver, Cheyenne, and Deadwood (site of the gold rush in the Dakota Territory) in the fall of 1876.

Holliday continued traveling on the western mining frontier, where gambling was most likely to be lucrative and legal.

They were initially introduced through mutual friend John Shanssey.

By 1877, Holliday was in Fort Griffin, Texas, where Wyatt Earp first met him (per his later account).

The two began to form an unlikely friendship; Earp more even-tempered and controlled, Holliday more hot-headed and impulsive.

This friendship was cemented in 1878 in Dodge City, Kansas, when Holliday defended Earp in a saloon against a handful of cowboys out to kill Wyatt, and where both Earp and Holliday had traveled to make money gambling with the cowboys who drove cattle from Texas.

Holliday was still practicing dentistry on the side from his rooms in Dodge City, as indicated in an 1878 Dodge newspaper advertisement (he promised money back for less than complete customer satisfaction), but this is the last known time he attempted to practice.

In an interview printed in a newspaper later in his life, he said that he only practiced dentistry "for about 5 years."[citation needed]

Holliday also met Mary Katharine Horony ("Big Nose Kate") in Fort Griffin and began his long-time involvement with her.

Holliday, who currently owned a bar in the town and was dealing faro (as he did throughout his life), left the bar, approached from another angle to cover the group with a gun, and either shot or threatened to shoot one of these men.

An incident in September 1878 had Earp, at the time a deputy city marshal, surrounded by men who had "the drop" on him.

Earp afterward always credited Holliday with saving his life that day.[citation needed] Many other accounts of Holliday's involvement in gunfights, however, are sometimes exaggerated.

He had several documented saloon altercations involving small shootings, where he was accounted as fast as Wild Bill Hickok.[citation needed]

One documented instance happened when Holliday was employed during a railroad dispute.

On July 19, 1879, Holliday and noted gunman John Joshua Webb were seated in a saloon in Las Vegas, New Mexico when a former U.S. Army scout named Mike Gordon began yelling loudly at one of the saloon girls. When Gordon stormed from the saloon, Holliday followed him. Gordon produced his pistol and fired one shot, missing. Holliday immediately drew his gun and killed Gordon. Holliday was placed on trial for the shooting but was acquitted, mostly based on the testimony of Webb.[8]

Tombstone, Arizona Territory

For many, it was time to move on to places not yet reached by the civilizing railroad, places where money was to be made.
-
Dodge was not a frontier town for long; by 1879, it had become too respectable for the kinds of people who had seen it through its early days.
-
Holliday, by this time, was as well known for his prowess as a gunfighter and for his gambling, though the latter was his trade and the former simply a reputation.
-
Through his friendship with Wyatt and the other Earp brothers, especially Morgan and Virgil, Holliday made his way to the silver-mining boom town of Tombstone, Arizona Territory, in September 1880.
-
The Earps had been there since December 1879. Some accounts state the Earps sent for Holliday when they realized the problems they faced in their feud with the Cowboy faction.
-
In Tombstone, Holliday quickly became embroiled in the local politics and violence that led up to the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in October 1881.
-
The gunfight happened in front of, and next to, Fly's boarding house and picture studio, where Holliday had a room, the day after a late-night argument between Holliday and Ike Clanton. The Clantons and McLaurys collected in the space between the boarding house, and the house west of it, before being confronted by the Earps. Holliday likely thought they were there specifically to assassinate him.

Virgil Earp took Holliday's walking stick: by not going conspicuously armed, Virgil was seeking to avoid panic in the citizenry of Tombstone, and in the Clantons and McLaurys.

It is known Holliday carried Virgil's coach gun into the fight; he was given the weapon just before the fight by Wyatt Earp, as Holliday was wearing a long coat which could conceal it.

The strategy failed: while Virgil held up the cane, one witness saw a man, almost certainly Holliday, poke a Cowboy in the chest with a "large bronze pistol" (probably the shotgun), then step back.

Shortly after, Holliday used the shotgun to kill Tom McLaury, the only man to sustain shotgun wounds — a fatal buckshot charge to the chest.

Wyatt Earp and Frank McLaury were the first men to fire, almost at the same time according to Wyatt's testimony.

This probably happened quite early in the fight, before Holliday fired a pistol.

Tom being hit early in the fight before most of the shots had been fired was also testified to by a pro-Cowboy witness ("Ham" Light).

Less likely scenarios in which Holliday held a pistol with one hand and a double-barreled shotgun in the other during the gunfight, and used the pistol first, have been postulated. The most widely accepted claim[citation needed] involves Holliday firing his shotgun once (wounding Tom McLaury) then discarding it in favor of a pistol for the remainder of the fight.

An inquest and arraignment hearing determined the gunfight was not a criminal act on the part of Holliday and the Earps.

The situation in Tombstone soon grew worse when Virgil Earp was ambushed and permanently injured in December 1881. Then Morgan Earp was ambushed and killed in March 1882.

After Morgan's murder, the Earps, their families, and Holliday fled town.

In Tucson, while Wyatt, Warren Earp, and Holliday were escorting the wounded Virgil Earp and his wife Allie to California, they prevented another ambush and this could have been the possible start of the vendetta against Morgan's killers.

Earp Vendetta Ride

Stilwell was in Tucson to answer a stage-robbery charge but wound up dead on the tracks in the train yard near the Earps' train. What Stilwell was doing in the train yard has never been explained (he may have been waiting to pick up another man who was supposed to testify in his favor), but Wyatt Earp certainly thought Stilwell was there to do the Earps harm.

The first victim of the vendetta was Frank Stilwell, a former deputy of Johnny Behan's.
-
In his biographies, Wyatt admitted to shooting Stilwell with a shotgun. However, Stilwell was found with two shotgun wounds and three bullet wounds.

Holliday, who was with Wyatt that night and said Stilwell and Ike Clanton were waiting in the train yard to assassinate Virgil Earp, is likely the second shooter. Holliday never directly acknowledged his role in Stilwell's killing or those that followed.

After the Earp families left for California and safety, Holliday, Wyatt, Wyatt's younger brother, Warren, and Wyatt's friends Sherman McMasters, Turkey Creek Jack Johnson, and Texas Jack Vermillion rode on a vendetta for three weeks, during which Curly Bill Brocius and at least two other men thought to be responsible for Morgan's death were killed.

Eventually, with warrants out for six of the vendetta posse (including Holliday) in the Arizona Territory for the killing of Stilwell, the group moved to New Mexico, then Colorado, in mid-April 1882.

While in New Mexico, Wyatt Earp and Holliday had a minor argument and parted ways, going separately to different parts of Colorado.

Due to lack of evidence, Colorado refused to extradite him, although he spent the last two weeks of that month in jail while the issue was decided.

After the vendetta ride, neither Holliday nor any other member of the party ever returned to Arizona to live.

In May 1882, Holliday was arrested in Denver for the Stilwell killing.

He and Wyatt met again in June 1882 in Gunnison after he was released.
-
There is controversy regarding whether any of the Earp vendetta posse slipped briefly back to the Tombstone area to kill Johnny Ringo on July 13, 1882. Biographers of Ringo do not believe it is very likely.

Several other known gunmen were also implicated in the death, including "Buckskin" Frank Leslie, little known gunman Lou Cooley, and gambler Mike O'Rourke. Some believe, however, that Ringo's death was in fact a suicide, as reported.

Final Illness, Death & Burial

Holliday spent the rest of his life in Colorado.

In 1887, prematurely gray and badly ailing, Holliday made his way to the Hotel Glenwood near the hot springs of Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

He hoped to take advantage of the reputed curative power of the waters, but the sulfurous fumes from the spring may have done his lungs more harm than good.
-
As he lay dying, Holliday allegedly asked for a drink of whiskey. Amused, he looked at his bootless feet as he died — no one ever thought that he would die in bed, with his boots off.

His reputed last words were, "Well I'll be damned. This is funny."

John Henry "Doc" Holliday died November 8, 1887. He was 36.

Recent Holliday biographer Gary L. Roberts, however, considers it unlikely that Holliday, who had scarcely left his bed for two months, would have been able to speak coherently, if at all, on the day he died.[9]

Despite legend, Wyatt Earp was certainly not present when Holliday died, and did not know of his death until months afterward.

Though she later attested to attending him in his final days, it is also highly doubtful that Big Nose Kate was present at his death.

An Episcopalian minister presided at Holliday's burial, which was on the day of his death, Nov. 8, 1887.

His gravestone sits in Linwood cemetery, which overlooks Glenwood Springs.

Entirely on the basis of the late date in the year, it has been speculated (for example)[10] that he was not actually buried in his marked grave, or even in the cemetery itself, on the theory that the ground was frozen and he must have been buried the same day in what was probably a temporary grave, not in the old cemetery, which was up a difficult road on the mountain.

However, the weather was evidently mild at the time of Holliday's burial, as biographer Gary Roberts has located evidence of other bodies being transported up the mountain to the same cemetery at the same time in 1887.[11]

Roberts argues that it is thus possible Holliday's body is indeed where the modern gravesite is, but no exhumation has been attempted.

Character

In an 1896 article, Wyatt Earp had this to say about Holliday, "Doc was a dentist not a lawman or an assassin, whom necessity had made a gambler; a gentleman whom disease had made a frontier vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long lean ash-blond fellow nearly dead with consumption, and at the same time the most skillful gambler and the nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun that I ever knew."[12]

Wyatt Earp is also quoted as saying: "I found him a loyal friend and good company."[13]

In a newspaper interview, Holliday was once asked if his killings had ever gotten on his conscience. He is reported to have said, "I coughed that out with my lungs, years ago."

Big Nose Kate, his long-time companion, remembered Holliday's reaction after his role in the O.K. Corral gunfight. She reported that Holliday came back to his room, sat on the bed, wept and said, "that was awful — awful".

Virgil Earp, interviewed May 30, 1882, in The Arizona Daily Star (two months after Virgil had fled Tombstone after Morgan Earp's death), summed up Holliday:

There was something very peculiar about Doc. He was gentlemanly, a good dentist, a friendly man and yet, outside of us boys, I don't think he had a friend in the Territory. Tales were told that he had murdered men in different parts of the country; that he had robbed and committed all manner of crimes, and yet, when persons were asked how they knew it, they could only admit it was hearsay, and that nothing of the kind could really be traced to Doc's account. He was a slender, sickly fellow, but whenever a stage was robbed or a row started, and help was needed, Doc was one of the first to saddle his horse and report for duty.

Record of violence

In three of his four known pistol fights, he shot one opponent (Billy Allen) in the arm, one (Charles White) across the scalp, and missed one man (a saloon keeper named Charles Austin) entirely.

Although historical accounts have usually supported the belief that Holliday was extremely fast with a pistol, his accuracy was less than perfect.
-
In an early incident in Tombstone in 1880, shortly after he arrived in town, a drunken Holliday managed to shoot Oriental Saloon owner Milt Joyce in the hand, and his bartender Parker in the toe (neither was the man Holliday originally quarreled with). For this, Holliday was fined for assault and battery.

With the exception of Mike Gordon in 1879, there are no contemporary newspaper or legal records to match the many unnamed men whom Holliday is credited with shooting to death in popular folklore; the same is true for the several tales of knifings credited to Holliday by early biographers.

Publicly, Holliday could be as fierce as was needed for a gambling man to earn respect.

In Tombstone in January 1882, he told Johnny Ringo (as recorded by diarist Parsons), "All I want of you is ten paces out in the street."

He and Ringo were prevented from having the gunfight only by the Tombstone police (which did not include the Earps at the time), who arrested them both.

Holliday's role in the deaths of Frank Stilwell and the other three men killed on the Earp vendetta ride remains uncertain, but he was present at the events.

Holliday is probably the second shooter of Stilwell, he killed Tom McLaury, and either Holliday or Morgan Earp fired the second bullet that ended the life of Frank McLaury.

Although Frank McLaury is sometimes erroneously stated to have been hit by three bullets (based on the next-day news accounts in Tombstone papers), at the coroner's inquest, Frank was found to actually have been hit only in the stomach and in the neck under the ear; therefore either Holliday or Morgan missed Frank.

Biographer Karen Holliday Tanner states that of Holliday's 17 known and recorded arrests, only one (1879, Mike Gordon in New Mexico) was for murder. Actually, Tanner is incorrect, since Holliday was arrested and jailed for murder in connection with both the O.K. Corral fight, and later for the murder of Frank Stilwell.

However, in neither case was Holliday successfully charged (the Spicer hearing was an indictment hearing, but it did not recommend indictment; any Stilwell indictment was quashed by Colorado's refusal to extradite).

Of the other arrests, Holliday pled guilty to two gambling charges, one charge of carrying a deadly weapon in the city (in connection with the argument with Ringo), and one misdemeanor assault and battery charge (his shooting of Joyce and Parker). The others were all dismissed or returned as "not guilty".

Actually the cane was typical; Holliday was physically frail throughout much of his adult life.

Additionally, Big Nose Kate, at the end of her life in 1940 (after the Lake biography of Earp had appeared in 1931), explicitly denied that the story was true and laughed at the idea of herself holding a gun on a sheriff. (Kate's refusal to embellish or even claim a part in a good story which centers around her, makes her simultaneous report of the action at the O.K. Corral gunfight, which she did claim to see, considerably more credible).

There are many supposed photos of Holliday, most of which do not quite match each other. The one clearly visibile adult portrait-photo known to be authentic is the March 1872 Pennsylvania School of Dental Surgery graduation photo taken when Holliday was 20. This photo shows a light-haired man with light and slightly asymmetrical eyes, a thin moustache and fine features. It matches only partially with the other known authentic photo, a poor-quality (but signed) standing photo of Holliday taken in Prescott, Arizona Territory, in 1879, the year before he went to Tombstone.

The 1879 standing photo, though certified, is of very poor quality and badly distinguishable. It shows Holliday as not changed a great deal in seven years, though he sports a larger mustache and perhaps also an imperial beard (triangular bit of hair left below the middle of the lower lip, combined with a mustache).

In the 1879 photo, Holliday is also wearing a tie with a diamond stickpin, which he was known to have worn habitually and which was among his few possessions (minus the diamond) when he died. This stickpin is similar to the one Wyatt Earp was wearing in his own most well-known photo.

It was October the 8th of 1998 and i had got up early that morning it was around 4am and decided to make me a cup of coffee and sit out back on my porch.Not far behind my house is woods.Any way as i sat and drank my coffee i got a real eye opener

I then heard loud ape type sounds coming from the woods,close by,so i ran and got a flashlight and headed up to the area where i heard the sounds coming from.

They where directly behind some heavy bushes and trees there must of been 4 together making these ape like sounds at one time and very loud.

I stood fairly close and began shining my flashlight directly where sounds were coming from.When i did they would stop making the ape sounds,when i put the flashlight away they would start back.

I was just amazed,till i came to my senses and figured i just might be a little to close.

The strange thing i thought about this besides the loud ape noises was that the dogs never barked at them even as loud as they were,but they barked at me with the flashlight.They also threw small objects of some kind i believe nuts or small rocks.

With its prominent location, the monument itself can be seen from several miles away.

In a happy coincidence (or was it?), the site is also less than 10 miles from Ah-Yeh-Li A-Lo-Hee, the Cherokee “Center of the World”.

Money for the project arrived from different banks across the country, as did all future correspondence from Christian. According to Wyatt Martin, this was yet another measure to protect R.C. Christian’s real identity,
“because he wanted to make sure it couldn’t be traced... He made it clear that he was very serious about secrecy.” -
After nine months of intense work on the part of Elberton Granite and Finishing, the Georgia Guidestones were unveiled to a crowd of 400 people on March 22, 1980.

The main structure of this impressive site is composed of four massive granite monoliths, each weighing around 20 tons, and a 9-ton central pillar, all of which support the square 11-ton ‘capstone’. The completed monument stands some 19 feet (just under 6 meters) high.

Perhaps taking a lesson from the discovery of the Rosetta Stone (an inscription in multiple languages which facilitated the decoding of the Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs), the four Pyramid-Blue granite side-slabs are etched with 4000 individual characters, which present the ‘guide’ in eight different languages.

The central support pillar features a ‘mail-slot’ through which observers can see the alignments to the rising sun on the equinoxes and solstices, while another angled hole drilled right through this center stone allows a person on the southern side of the monument to look through and see the North Star, Polaris, which sits almost directly at the North celestial pole.

Meanwhile, a 7/8 inch hole in the capstone allows the light from the Sun to pinpoint the day of the year at noon of every day on the central column.

The four side-slabs are oriented to the limits of the migration of the moon during the course of the year.

The eight languages which present the guide to future humanity are English, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, and Arabic.

In addition, the capstone has the words “Let These Be Guidestones to an Age of Reason” inscribed upon it in four ancient scripts: Egyptian hieroglyphs, Babylonian cuneiform, Classical Greek, and Sanskrit.

But with mystery and secrecy comes fear. Not all in the local area were happy with the project, perhaps confirming why R.C. Christian was so quick to announce his patriotic and religious nature.

Local Christians in particular feared that the newly-constructed megaliths would become a ‘sacred site’ to heathens and occultists:

The first rumor began among members of the Elberton Granite Association, jealous of the attention being showered on one of their own: Fendley was behind the whole thing, they said, aided by his friend Martin, the banker. The gossip became so poisonous that the two men agreed to take a lie detector test at the Elberton Civic Center. The scandal withered when The Elberton Star reported that they had both passed convincingly, but the publicity brought a new wave of complaints. As word of what was being inscribed spread, Martin recalls, even people he considered friends asked him why he was doing the devil’s work. A local minister, James Travenstead, predicted that “occult groups” would flock to the Guidestones, warning that “someday a sacrifice will take place here.”

Some pounced on the date of the unveiling – March 22 – as confirmation that the Guidestones were the work of the devil.

Christian pundits were quick to associate the date with various ancient pagan rites, as well as those of Wicca – seemingly oblivious that the date marks the Spring Equinox, one of the key alignments of the monument, and the original reason why these rites occur on that date.

But if the seemingly pagan nature of the monument was a concern, the instructions themselves induced near panic in various segments of the local, and national, community.

Those who see conspiracy everywhere jumped on the first instruction, which suggests maintaining the world population at 500 million. As one hysterical author wrote, “To bring the population to this level means that nine tenths of the earth’s population must die!” Or in the words of another Christian writer, “that kind of sounds like the mass extermination of the earth’s population during the time of tribulation.”

More recently activism against the Georgia Guidestones has become more fervent, with critics banding together to call for their destruction.

A 2009 feature on the monument in Wired Magazine pointed out...
...Among them is an activist named Mark Dice, author of a book called The Resistance Manifesto. In 2005, Dice (who was using a pseudonym of his own — ”John Conner” — appropriated from the Terminator franchise’s main character) began to demand that the Guidestones be “smashed into a million pieces.” He claims that the monument has “a deep Satanic origin,” a stance that has earned him plenty of coverage, both in print and on the Web. According to Dice, Christian was a high-ranking member of “a Luciferian secret society” at the forefront of the New World Order. “The elite are planning to develop successful life-extension technology in the next few decades that will nearly stop the aging process,” Dice says, “and they fear that with the current population of Earth so high, the masses will be using resources that the elite want for themselves. The Guidestones are the New World Order’s Ten Commandments. They’re also a way for the elite to get a laugh at the expense of the uninformed masses, as their agenda stands as clear as day and the zombies don’t even notice it.”

In the past year vandals have spray-painted messages across the inscriptions, and splashed the slabs with polyurethane, which makes cleaning the graffiti a difficult proposition.

Messages on Internet forums suggest a petition to have them destroyed, and even debate whether it would be illegal to take it upon themselves to do the destroying.

Like Dice, they see the Guidestones as the calling card of the Illuminati, the New World Order, and/or various other groups intent on controlling the world’s population.

Though why some shadowy group intent on killing off 90% of the world’s population would announce their plans on a monument in rural Georgia is beyond me...

The R.C. Brothers

At least the conspiracy theorists might have one thing right. The messages from R.C. Christian and his secret group certainly evoke the philosophy behind a number of secret societies of the 17th and 18th centuries, including the earliest incarnations of Freemasonry and the Illuminati.

Arising out of the ‘Rosicrucian’ tradition, these secret societies had at their heart an embracing of the use of reason to guide humanity forward, with an ultimate goal of a ‘brotherhood of man’, a Pan-Sophist Utopia in which people around the world united in a peaceful quest for knowledge.

The public announcement of this goal came in the Rosicrucian manifestos, which circulated in the early 17th century and inspired many leading thinkers to join this ‘quest’.

Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis followed in 1627, with its tale of a group known as ‘Salomon’s House’, an order of priest-scientists who pursued research into all the arts and sciences in order to benefit humanity.

With officials wearing turbans decorated with “a red cross on the top”, it is easy to see Bacon’s affiliation – no matter whether official or self-announced.

In the words of the great Renaissance scholar, Dame Frances Yates:
The religion of New Atlantis has much in common with that of the Rosicrucian manifestos. It is intensely Christian in spirit, though not doctrinal, interpreting the Christian spirit in terms of practical benevolence, like the R.C. Brothers... The inhabitants of New Atlantis would appear to have achieved the great instauration of learning and have therefore returned to the state of Adam in Paradise before the Fall – the objective of advancement both for Bacon and for the authors of the Rosicrucian manifestos.

Given the secrecy of R.C. Christian and his group, and the fear and loathing it has engendered in certain quarters, it is perhaps worth noting that Yates points out the effect of the ‘invisibility’ of the Brothers in Bacon’s Rosicrucian parable. “[T]he travellers wonder whether they are not in the presence of divine powers and beings, whether the invisibility of the Brothers (whom we now know to have been R.C. Brothers) may not have in it something supernatural,” says Yates.

“[T]he New Atlantis is poised on a knife edge, depending for its favourable reception by the reader on whether that reader accepts the scientific influences in it as ‘almost magical’, or as diabolically inspired.”

[who] endeavour to put narrow-mindedness out of countenance, by the practice of so extensive a charity that it reaches unto everything called man, and nothing less than an universal good-will can content it... [taking] the whole body of mankind to their care.”

Later members of the Invisible College/Royal Society would include some of the greatest scientific minds of the last four centuries.

Esoteric scholar Manly P. Hall claims that the Rosicrucian tradition was simply the latest incarnation of a movement that was over three millennia old.

“For more than three thousand years,” announces Hall, “secret societies have labored to create the background of knowledge necessary to the establishment of an enlightened democracy among the nations of the world.”

Hall says the global, collective name of these secret societies is “The Order of the Quest”.

In any case, when Freemasonry emerged into the public consciousness in the 18th century, bringing with it a large dose of the Rosicrucian ethos, we finally see the full flowering (pardon the pun) of the seeds planted by the Rosicrucian manifestos.

Numerous founders of the United States of America would be initiated into Freemasonry, including Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and Paul Revere. Others, if not actually Masons, were certainly aligned in their thinking, such as Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine.

And with Paine we come full circle, remembering that the message of the Georgia Guidestones is to lead future humanity toward a ‘New Age of Reason’.

A Record in Stone

It is in the myths of the Freemasons that we find a curious ancient echo of the Georgia Guidestones. Or perhaps, more correctly, the blueprint –

for in some of the Masonic legends we find the construction of stone monuments in order to transmit knowledge to a post-apocalyptic world.

For example, in one tale the Biblical prophet Enoch is moved to create a lasting monument, inscribed with hieroglyphs, to ensure that certain secret knowledge is not lost:
The degeneracy of mankind became so great , and their perversions of pure antediluvian Masonry so grievous, that, according to our traditions, Enoch feared the genuine secrets would be lost, and swallowed up in the predicted Deluge. To prevent which he hid the Grand Secret, engraven on a white oriental porphyry stone, in the bowels of the Earth; and being apprehensive that the morality and science which had been embodied in Freemasonry with such care would be absorbed in the general destruction; to preserve the principles of the science, he built two pillars near the spot where they were concealed, with an inscription in hieroglyphs, importing that near it was a precious treasure which had been dedicated to God.

Arturo de Hoyos, Grand Archivist for the Scottish Rite Southern Jurisdiction, suggests another possible source for the myths of the Royal Arch degree:
The writings of Flavius Josephus may also have contributed to the Masonic tradition. In his Antiquities of the Jews (Book I, Chap. II, vs. 3), he mentions that Seth, the son of Adam “made two pillars; the one of brick, the other of stone: they inscribed their discoveries on them both, that in case the pillar of brick should be destroyed by the flood, the pillar of stone might remain, and exhibit those discoveries to mankind; and also to inform them that there was another pillar of brick erected by them.”

Graham Hancock discusses Josephus’ recounting of this myth in his seminal book Fingerprints of the Gods, adding details which further correspond with the Georgia Guidestones.

Given the plethora of astronomical alignments incorporated into the Guidestones, it’s worth noting that these antediluvian people were said by Josephus to be “the inventors of that particular sort of wisdom which is concerned with the heavenly bodies, and their order.”

Hancock goes on to point out that similar myths of knowledge transmission through world-ending events can be found around the world.

In the Indian Puranas, the fish god Vishnu warns his human protégé shortly before the Great Flood that “he should conceal the Sacred Scriptures in a safe place” to protect it from the impending disaster.

In Mesopotamia’s version of the Deluge, the god Ea tells Utnapishtim “to take the beginning, the middle and the end of whatever was consigned to writing and then bury it in the City of the Sun at Sippara,” in order that the survivors of the Great Flood could return and search for the writings.

Perhaps most notable is the account of Oxford astronomer John Greaves, who collected local Egyptian myths when visiting the land of the pyramids in the 17th century.

According to some local traditions, the three Giza pyramids were said to have been constructed by an antediluvian king, who dreamt that “the whole earth was turned over, with the inhabitants lying upon their faces and the stars falling down and striking one another with a terrible noise”:

And he awakened with great feare, and assembled the chief priests of all the provinces of Egypt...He related the whole matter to them and they took the altitude of the stars, and made their prognostication, and they foretold of a deluge. The king said, will it come to our country? They answered yes, and will destroy it. And there remained a certain number of years to come, and he commanded in the mean space to build the Pyramids...And he engraved in those Pyramids all things that were told by wise men, as also all profound sciences – the science of Astrology, and of Arithmeticke, and of Geometry, and of Physicke. All this may be interpreted by him that knows their characters and language.

While investigation of the Giza pyramids has turned up very little ‘engraving’ – in fact, engraving of any sort is conspicuous by its absence on these imposing structures – certain knowledge is certainly ‘encoded’ and ready to be interpreted.

The main passage descending into the Great Pyramid on its northern face is aimed directly into the firmament at the ‘imperishable’ polar stars, just as the Georgia Guidestones are now locked onto Polaris through the hole in its central pillar.

And, through design or coincidence, the monument also encodes the values of pi and phi, in the slope of the pyramids sides and the dimensions of the ‘King’s Chamber’ respectively. Certainly, we can at least give Greaves the ‘astrology’ and ‘geometry’ parts of his statement.

These myths about the purpose of stone monuments show that, far from being a New World Order directive to kill off 90% of the population of the planet, the Georgia Guidestones are actually meant as an instruction manual for the small band of survivors of some future cataclysm.

What form the designers of the monument thought that cataclysm would take is unknown, though given the era it was built in one can assume that fears of a global nuclear war would have been a contributing factor (and perhaps offers an answer as to why it was built away from large population centers).

We do know for a fact though that population increase and irrational leadership were at the forefront of the group’s concerns, which might likely lead to some sort of Third World War.

According to a statement by the monument’s designers...
...The group consciousness of our race is blind, perverse, and easily distracted by trivia while it should be focused on fundamentals. We are entering a critical era. Population pressures will soon create political and economic crisis throughout the world. These will make more difficult and at the same time more needed the building of a rational world society.
...The approaching crisis may make mankind willing to accept a system of world law which will stress the responsibility of individual nations in regulating internal affairs, and which will assist them in the peaceful management of international frictions. With such a system we could eliminate war. We could provide every person an opportunity to seek a life of purpose and fulfillment.
There are alternatives to Armageddon. They are attainable. But they will not happen without coordinated efforts by millions of dedicated people in all nations of the world.

In truth, the controversial aspect of the inscription on the Georgia Guidestones is not the figure of 500 million, as the more zany conspiracy theorists would have it. As we’ve seen, there is little doubt that this is meant as a guide to a small group of survivors of some future disaster.

The more provocative part of the inscription is the word “maintaining” – and the group are quite clear in their intended meaning on this point:
In 1980, as these stones were being raised, the most pressing world problem was the need to control human numbers...controlling our reproduction is urgently needed. It will require major changes in our attitudes and customs.
...In these circumstances, reproduction is no longer exclusively a personal matter. Society must have a voice and some power of direction in regulating this vital function. The wishes of human couples are important, but not paramount.
The interests of present society and the welfare of future generations must be given increasing consideration as we develop mechanisms to bring rational control to our childbearing. No person should be brought into the world unwanted and unneeded. No child should be conceived through carelessness. If each life is to have value, every conception must be part of an ordered plan of two parents who are aware of their responsibilities to that child and to society.
...Knowledge and techniques for regulating human reproduction are now in existence.

Between those words, and the eugenic-sounding instruction to improve “fitness and diversity” in reproduction, the message of the Guidestones starts sounding, rather unfortunately, like a Chinese remake of Gattaca.

To be sure, the end goal is ultimately sane, and some of the sentiments – such as having no unwanted children – are laudable, but would it justify the means?
-
I have a sneaking suspicion that very few Western individuals would allow the government to dictate their right to have children. At least, very few pre-apocalyptic individuals...

But the message from the group acknowledges exactly that, impressing that population control would “require major changes in our attitudes and customs”.
-
It is just that they, in 1980, saw an impending population emergency. And it has to be said that time – even worse, a very short amount of time – has proven their concerns to be justified.
-
When the Georgia Guidestones were planned and built, just three decades ago, the world population was estimated at 3.5 billion people. As of August 2009, that number has almost doubled to 6.8 billion. That sort of increase is the very definition of unsustainable.

So the question should perhaps simply be framed as – are we more likely to change our customs, or rush headlong into apocalypse? Perhaps the fact that the group actually decided to build the Georgia Guidestones as a lasting guide gives us an answer...

Message in a Granite Bottle

It’s amusing (if you’re open to black humor) to note that Graham Hancock, in the conclusion to his bestselling book Fingerprints of the Gods, asks what we might do if faced with impending doom.
-
“Of course there would at first be much panic and despair,” writes Hancock. “Nevertheless – if there were sufficient advance warning – steps would be taken to ensure that there would be some survivors and that some of what was most valuable in our high scientific knowledge would be preserved for the benefit of future generations.”
-
He suggests that the survivors might be “blasted back into the Stone Age”, so a priority would be finding a way to communicate with them and make sure they got the message “no matter what language they spoke”.
-
Amusing, because the creators of the Georgia Guidestones have done exactly that. In the same vein as the myths concerning a lost antediluvian civilization, they have inscribed messages upon granite stones, in order to pass on the ‘wisdom’ of our own time to future survivors of some cataclysm that is yet to occur.

Whether you agree with the inscribed wisdom may be another thing, but it is hard to not be impressed with the forward-thinking behind this massive message in a bottle. Not least when we look at how most of our knowledge is currently encoded – as bits of information, stored on magnetic disks, requiring electricity to access it.

However, in terms of forward thinking to preserve knowledge for future generations, the Georgia Guidestones do not stand alone.
-
For instance, the Rosetta Project is a modern attempt to archive all of the world’s documented languages.
-
As one aspect of their commitment to preserving this knowledge, members of the Rosetta Project have created the ‘Rosetta Disk’. Made of nickel, and just 2.8 inches in diameter, the disk is meant to be a “durable archive of human languages”.
-
The Disk surface...is etched with a central image of the earth and a message written in eight major world languages: “Languages of the World: This is an archive of over 1,500 human languages assembled in the year 02008 C.E. Magnify 1,000 times to find over 13,000 pages of language documentation.” The text begins at eye-readable scale and spirals down to nano-scale. This tapered ring of languages is intended to maximize the number of people that will be able to read something immediately upon picking up the Disk, as well as implying the directions for using it—‘get a magnifier and there is more.’
On the reverse side of the disk from the globe graphic are over 13,000 microetched pages of language documentation. Since each page is a physical rather than digital image, there is no platform or format dependency. Reading the Disk requires only optical magnification.

The disk is “immune to water damage, able to withstand high temperatures, and unaffected by electromagnetic radiation.” And the disk is housed, and protected, within a four inch spherical which is split into two hemispheres. The bottom is made of high-grade stainless steel, while the top is made of optical glass and doubles as a magnifier.

Another project to preserve knowledge is the Church of Scientology’s ‘Trementina Base’ in New Mexico.

According to the Church, the purpose of the base is as an archive to preserve the writings and recordings of the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard. The texts are said to have been engraved on stainless steel tablets and encased in titanium capsules, which reside in an underground bunker on the site.

I shall leave it to the reader to decide whether this is knowledge we want to transmit to our post- apocalyptic descendants...

What captivates us about the Georgia Guidestones is as much their mystery, as it is the structure itself.
-
R.C. Christian walked into history in 1980, left his mark upon the landscape of Georgia, and then walked right back out of time.
-
In doing so, he also left his mark upon the minds of anybody who has come across the enigmatic Georgia Guidestones.
-
Are they the work of ‘The Order of the Quest’, a secret society as old as civilization and entrusted with the preservation of human wisdom? Or are they the work of a group of Nazi-inspired Illuminati wannabes, with no greater claim to knowledge than any of the rest of us?
-
Whatever our opinion in the here-and-now, we can be sure that a future generation, rebuilding after a global cataclysm, would likely revere the message of the Guidestones – just as we have an innate feeling of respect and awe for the megaliths left behind from our predecessors, such as at Giza, Stonehenge, and Göbekli Tepe.

Lastly, in case the appearance of R.C. Christian seems more akin to a Comte de St Germain or Men in Black intervention to you, rather than a mundane project by some bored businessman, there is one story from the construction of the Georgia Guidestones which bears retelling.

Sandblaster Charlie Clamp, who etched the 4,000 individual letters onto the massive granite slabs, recounted that while carving the guides he heard “strange music and disjointed voices.”

Readers of my article in Darklore Volume 1, “Her Sweet Murmur”, would certainly be intrigued by that anecdote, with its suggestion of paranormal interactions.

With the Georgia Guidestones, the mystery goes on. And may continue on for millennia, beyond the apocalypse.

I went to feed my two pit bulls around 11:30 pm one night, me and my wife had returned home late from eating out.

OBSERVED: It all started around mid May 2008.

While taking the dogs food to them I heard a long moan / howl coming from the woods behind my house

I at first thought it was my neighbor but it just did not make sense because it actually sounded farther off in the woods than my neighbors house sits.

I started surfing the internet later on after that and came across the BFRO website and played a few vocalizations and the Ohio Moan / Howl sounded just like the one I heard.

I decided to ask my wife if she had heard or seen anything unusual around the woods and house, she asked me why and I reluctantly told her I thought I had heard a Sasquatch in the woods.

She started laughing and said “ I guess they throw rocks at the house and garage too”.

Well my jaw dropped I asked her what she meant and she told me that the whole time I was deployed to Iraq (2005-2006)when she would come out on the back porch to smoke at night some one would throw rocks and sticks at our garage which is not attached to our house and sits back in the wood line some.

She even had her brother come out and listen one night while he was down on vacation it freaked both of them out.

the weather had turned really cold here in Ga and when I would go out to smoke at night I would not stay long.

That was pretty much the extent of every thing until 3 nights ago,

It was during one of the brief smoke breaks that around 1:00 AM I was staring out into the front yard when I caught some movement in the corner of my eye,

I turned my head just in time to see the massive back, shoulders and head of this enormous creature disappear behind some bushes.

It was fairly close to the yard light I have in my yard but just far enough away to not be able to tell the actual color of this thing I would guess a dark brown or grayish.

I went out and measured a limb that I am fairly sure was about even with its head and the limb measured at exactly 10 feet so the height was about 10 feet tall

it was slightly hunched over with no visible neck and a shoulder width, the best I can guess, of about 3-4 feet across

it looked like it covered the distance of 6-7 feet with one step ( although I could not see its legs and feet I am judging by its gate)

I could not see its face but its fur looked like a horses winter coat that had not been combed out.

When I spoke with the witness about his brief sighting and the other activity he mentioned in his report, he was factual and sincere. The sighting area is a sparsely populated rural area with plenty of wildlife, farmland and creeks in the vicinity.

Witness stated that the approximate height of the animal to be around 9-10 feet tall from measuring a branch where he saw the animal retreating back into the wood line.
-
The vocalization he heard in May 2008 sounded similar to an “Ohio” type moan/howl approximately ½ mile away. The vocalization started out low, gradually getting louder, lasting about 30 seconds.

Witness also made note of a few tree twists at a height of about 6’ in the woods located near his property.

His wife also added that while he was deployed to Iraq, on many occasions she would be on the back porch and hear small stone-like objects hit their aluminum garage.

we went to the chattahoochee national forest in murray county ga.

OBSERVED: it was autumn, and 4 or 5 of us decided to go camping.

we had been there many times before, and seen many kinds of wildlife bear, deer, turkey and wild hogs.

we set up camp and built a fire beside a creek. we sat there talking and telling stories and such.

well around 11:oo p.m we started hearing strange noises like a high pitch shrill

someone in the group said it could be a panther since they have been known to scream.

we sat there about another hour or so with the noises happening around every 20 minutes or so.then we heard limbs moving and twigs cracking from the other side of the creek. so we all looked that direction and just could make out the brush and trees at the edge of the creek.

it sounded like whatever it was started getting closer.when all of a suuden we all seen limbs from the magnolia trees moving and out step this figure into the fire light

it took 2 more steps, then we all could plainly see it.it was around 6'5'' or 7' tall with a huge broad chest maybe 3' wide.

one of my friends got scared and dove into the tent and made a bit of noise,but it didnt seem startled.

it looked at us and then squated by the edge of the water. it appeared to be doing something with its hands,all the while keeping a dead stere on us

I met with the witness who submitted the report, as well as a second witness to the incident. Both were adamant as to the details of the encounter.
-
An additional detail from the on-site interview was that one of the witnesses was a pre-teen who had been crying loudly earlier in the evening.
-
The group began hearing screams from the top of the ridge and up the mountain from the stream side camp site. There were 2-3 that were 15 to 20 minutes apart prior to hearing something moving down the hill and toward the camp site.

The creature came down the hill side and stepped out in front of a tree that overhung the creek.
-
The stream was about 30 feet from the fire, and about 4 feet wide at that point. It squatted by the side of the stream in full view of the campers. Its hands were in the water, and it stared back at the campers with no fear.
-
The encounter lasted approximately 1 minute. The creature then stood up and walked back around the tree.
-
The witnesses could hear it moving back up the mountain and away from the stream.
-
The head was rounded and sat on the shoulders. The eyes were amber in color. The arms hung almost to the knees and the legs were muscular with big calves. They could clearly see the feet on stream edge.

This report is interesting, in that it could have been the crying of the child that drew the attention of the animal. This has been noted in several reports where children are present during sightings.

The witness had another incident in September of 2008 while camping near this area. They returned to camp and heard something run away. The second night they felt something was lurking around the camp all night. They heard wood being broken during the night and found 3 inch diameter pine trees snapped off about at about 4 foot in height in a pattern that suggested a trail.

My husband and I went camping this past Saturday. Sunday morning,(August 30th) around 4:00, I woke up to go the the restroom. (There was a building near the campsites that provided restroom and shower facilities.)

It was pitch black outside, except for the light from my lantern and the lights from the building. I went in, did my thing, and as I started to leave to walk back to my tent, I stopped because I felt there was someone behind me.

I turned around and I saw three gray aliens standing in the woods behind the building, near another campsite on the hill in the back.

They didn't seem to be doing anything but standing there.

I thought it could have been the people from the campground on the hill, but why would they just be standing in the middle of the woods at 4am for no apparent reason?

When one of them turned and looked at me, I realized they weren't human.

For one thing, the arms were too long and the bodies were too thin. Their skin had a pale glossy look, and they had a very large cranium with lumps all over the top of the scalp.

They had huge black eyes that seemed to pierce right through me.

I stand 5'3" tall, and they looked about one or two inches shorter than me.

The one that saw me started to inch toward me, but I bolted back to my tent.

When my husband asked me what was wrong, all I could say was "There's (expletive) aliens back there!"When he finally calmed me down enough, he had me stay in the tent while he went to go see what it was.
He found nothing. -
I don't know if I had any missing time or not. It was around 5:00 when I was finally calm enough to leave the tent, with my husband, of course.

We had a cigarette and talked about my sighting. Then around 6:00 we got a fire going and cooked breakfast. That's really all I remember from that morning.

Later that night, (I'm not sure what time it was. We kept waking up off and on.) he said he saw a shadowy figure move outside.

He didn't hear any footsteps. He looked up and saw the top cover on the tent move, as if someone pulled it aside to look in at us from above.

When we woke up again later that night, the blankets on his side of the tent were wet. (It started raining that night.) My side was dry for the most part.

LOCATION DETAILS: Our river place is on the Ohoopee River next to the Griffin Ferry Bridge. It is about five miles east of Oak Park, Ga.

NEAREST TOWN: Ten miles: Lyons, Ga, small town of Oak Park 4 miles
NEAREST ROAD: Griffin Ferry Road (three miles south of I-16)

OBSERVED: An unseen animal howling LOUDLY while violently shaking a 12X45 mobile home almost off its blocks.

My wife and I were awake, she was cleaning in the kitchen, and I was in the living room reading.

Suddenly a LOUD howling sound began and at the same moment the trailer began shaking very violently. The howling and the shaking lasted ten seconds, but it was very loud as that of a bull horn.

My first response was thinking we were having an earthquake.My second was someone outside somehow making the noise while somehow shaking the trailer. I grabbed my pistol and ran outside. There was nothing moving outside any where.

ALSO NOTICED: The old trailer we were staying in had been empty for more than three years.

When we arrived at the river trailer, the main entrance door was/had been forced open. people/vandals and animals had been entering the trailer, for months if not years.

We had just returned from a military tour of duty in Germany. We were going to live in the old trailer until I could build a house on the property.

OTHER WITNESSES: My wife and myself, our two children were asleep.

OTHER STORIES: No. I lived on that property for more than 15 years, and hunted the woods, trapped and fished the river and never thought of a Big Foot until I surfed into your site a few months ago and heard the Ohio Howls.

It was then that I realized what had happened the night that an earthquake accompanied by a hair-raising howling occurred that cold night in 1982.

The witness recounted the event via telephone.

The witness and his wife had purchased the property for the purpose of building a house on the land. Previously, the area had been used as a fishing camp. A trailer sat empty on the property for several years.

The witness and his family were using the trailer as a temporary home while the house was being built.
-
On the evening of the incident, the trailer began shaking violently, as if a large creature were thrashing it from side to side.

This was accompanied by an incredibly loud howl,

The howl was not only powerfully loud, but resonated inside the small structure, amplifying the sound within. It ascended and descended in pitch, with a siren-like quality.

The witness' wife began screaming in fear, and the shaking and howling suddenly ceased.

The witness retrieved a handgun and went outside, but couldn't see or hear anything in the environment.

It is the witness' interpretation that the animal may have used the abandoned trailer as a temporary shelter in the past, as there were signs of various animals entering and exiting the trailer when they purchased the property.

The witness suggests that the animal may have been responding to the shelter being occupied by people on this particular occasion.

This may be an accurate interpretation, supported by other stories of sasquatches temporarily occupying abandoned human shelters or structures.

Likewise, there are other accounts across the continent of sasquatches shaking or striking homes and shelters with human occupants.

The Ohoopee River and the surrounding areas have yielded other reports that GA-BFRO members are aware of. It is a heavily forested area, interspersed with rural agricultural plots.

LOCATION DETAILS: [First heard within 50 yards of the western boundary of Fort Stewart]

OBSERVED: Myself, an infantry squad leader, and two other squad leaders, with 2 privates, were assigned to do a recon of another unit a few miles away. We did not have time to decide a route. As it was getting dark we set out with a map and compass.

Our route took us through near chest deep swamp for several hundred meters. We came out of the water probably about a mile from the other unit. Shortly after exiting the water we could hear something or someone following us.

We thought maybe it was our instructors, but then decided it couldn't be. No one in their right mind would have followed us through the water and no one knew the route we took.

Although we didn't see it, it was easily within 25 yds.

It would come up behind us. When you would expect to see it, it would cut off to the right or left, go around us, fade off, and then we would hear it coming again. This went on for 10 or 15 minutes.

Wanting to see it we tried to trick it by having Sgt. W. and Pvt. P. sit tight and the rest of us would move out slowly, then in 5 minutes they would pick up and move out.

The thing started weaving in and out of the two groups like in a figure-8.

Then we couldn't hear it anymore. We met up a couple of hundred yards later with the other 2 soldiers and they said the same thing -- that it came between the 2 groups, around them, toward us, like it knew exactly where we were even though we couldn't see it.

Later about 400 meters from our objective we set in a patrol base and decided we would conduct the last phase in 2 man teams with myself and Sgt. H. going first, Sgt. W., Pvt. P. and Pvt. S. staying at the patrol base until our return in a couple of hours, at which time 2 others of the patrol would go out.

This is when it got really wierd, we were about half way to the objective when we heard something following us again.

We got to the opposite side of a somewhat open area and laid down facing the direction of the noises.

Probably 5 minutes passed and all of a sudden this scream-roar is the only way I can explain it. We looked at each other and I said "what the hell was that". We had never heard anything like that before.

About a minute later it screamed again and then we heard what sounded like a huge rotten tree falling, and brush breaking. That was the last we heard and the last I wanted to hear.

A little about myself, 27 yrs. old at the time, from the mountains of WV , combat veteran, hunted small and large game since 8 yrs. old.
The soldier with me was from NC, outdoorsman, very woodswise, 28yrs. old at the time of the incident. -
Hard for me to sit down and write this. I haven't told very many people of this in fear of being laughed at. I know that whatever it was it didn't want us there and it was intelligent.

ALSO NOTICED: Not that I know of. We were out of the area before daylight. Ft. Stewart is 40 miles wide and 20 miles deep, and [is full of] uninhabited swamp. If you wanted to go somewhere and never be seen that would be the place to go.

Fort Stewart in Georgia is north of Savannah and about 30 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. This large military reservation is full of wildlife, including alligators and pumas.

The witness [Sgt. R.B.] had patrolled other parts of Fort Stewart many times at night over the course of seven years.
-
On many of those occasions he was alone on patrol. He had never heard anything like this before, and heard of no other incidents from other soldiers/personnel on the base.
-
When this incident happened, he and his unit were on patrol in a nearly inaccessible swampy section of the reservation where there are no roads.
-
RB had never been in this area before, and says no more than 3-4 people pass through this section each year.

The stalking and circling of the soldiers went on for a while, in two phases, before the screaming and the tree fall.
-
Two screams were heard. One a moment before the tree fall, and the second almost simultaneous with the tree fall.
-
The animal was heard running away right after the tree fall. RB said it was obvious the screams were coming from a very large animal.

During the stalking and circling episodes the soldiers could hear that the animal was running on two legs. It was running and circling the soldiers in the darkness, at high speed through the brush.

RB said his patrol group was intimidated by how fast the animal could move as it circled them repeatedly, just out of view.

The patrol wasn't carrying any bright lights or spotlights. They only had small flashlights with red filter lenses for reading maps. They weren't carrying any nightvision devices either.

LOCATION DETAILS: This occured in the countryside of Glennville, Georgia. The name of the road was Beards Creek Road. The sighting was near Beards Creek Church.

OBSERVED: Two friends and I were driving out to the country to check out and old graveyard. Near the old graveyard there's a new church and a larger new graveyard.
It was late at night probably around ten or eleven pm. -
We were heading down a dirt road to go to the old graveyard. Around the new church there was a big street light. As we passed by the church we noticed this big shadow standing (on two feet) under the light.

We turned around to check it out thinking it was a person and wondering why they were there so late at night.

As we headed toward this shadow it took off running still on 2 feet toward the new graveyard.

We followed it with the car through the graveyard on dirt road. We drove up next to a large headstone and just as we thought we lost sight of this thing it stood up from behind the headstone. We froze as it stared at us.

It was very tall, about 7 or 8 feet, and had long brown hair that covered it's entire body.

It's eyes looked red, I guess from the glare of the head lights.

It only stood there for a few short seconds and then turned and ran off into the woods. Needless to say after seeing it we did not try to continue to follow it.

We were just teenagers and having a few beers that night so we never told anyone about this. We thought they would just say we were crazy or drunk.

I did however hear other stories about other sightings of something like this in that area. Also heard one story that it might have been a lost soldier since this was close to [Fort Stewart] Army base.

I never really knew what it was that we saw that night. Didn't want to go back and find out.

OTHER WITNESSES: We were driving to see the old graveyard and church because there were rumors of ghost out there. We did drink a beer on the way out there, but we were not drunk. We still had our senses working properly.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Around 10 or 11 pm
ENVIRONMENT: The church was built on an old country road. It is or was (been 17 years since I have been there) a wooded area. There were swamps and a lot of farm land out there. It is close to an army base called Fort Stewart.

LOCATION DETAILS: North east part of Fort Stewart in a training area. Surrounded by Highway 119, 144 and I-95 This area is relatively swampy with thick vegeation in most parts. Occured on a dirt road. Would have to look at a map of Ft. Stewart to show close to exact area.

OBSERVED: Let me set up the story with some information that is pertinent to the situation. I was in the Army stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia. My job at the time was as a gunner on a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. My unit was in the field conducting a training exercise which was to last a few days. The Bradley fighting vehicle is an armored tracked vehicle that normally has a crew of three; (Vehicle Commander, Gunner and Driver).

One night around 2AM my vehicle was moving solo along a dirt road (we called them tank trails) in the northeast part of Fort Stewart. We were driving blacked out with no lights on. I was acting as gunner and had my head buried in the thermal sight system which is used to engage targets at night. The thermal sight distinguishes differences in heat signatures and formulates a picture in either white hot or black hot (depending on what you have selected) against a red background. The driver had the hatch closed and was using a night vision device to view the road.

The vehicle commander was standing up out of the hatch looking through night vision monoculars. While moving along, if we encountered an intersection I would slew the turret either left or right (90 degrees) over the side of the vehicle to look down the road and clear it of any simulated enemy. At one particular intersection I did this maneuver, slewed the turret over the right side of the vehicle and looked down the trail.
It was clear and the vehicle made a right turn. After turning we drove approximately one hundred yards. The vegetation was extremely thick in this area due to being a swamp and about 10-12 feet high. As I was looking through the sight I observed something come out of the vegetation, approximately fifty yards in front of us, from the right side of the road and walk across the road to the left and re-enter the vegetation. The dirt road is approximately 15-20 feet wide. -
This creature cleared the road in three steps at a normal stride. It didn't seemed bothered by us or in a rush. I don't recall it looking in our direction. Its head and torso were straight and it just walked on. Typically while looking through the thermal sight at a person you can distinguish clothing, hair, equipment they may be wearing, etc and be able to judge their height with the surroundings they are standing in. This creature appeared through the thermal sight to be one constant color from head to foot, have no clothes on and to be fairly tall, approximately 7-9 feet.

The first thought that came to my head was a bigfoot. At the time it all just seemed to make sense. From watching documentaries and reading books as a kid it all seemed to fit. Everything happened very quickly. I was shocked when I saw it and said nothing till after it went back into the woods. I announced to the vehicle commander over the internal comm system that something just walked across the road and it wasn't a man or an animal. He got spooked and told the driver to punch it. I wanted to stop and investigate but no one else was having that. We were never able to go back and now I could only vaguely point out a general area we were in.

ALSO NOTICED: No one else wanted to hang around to check out the area in which the creature crossed. Due to the vehicles noise nothing was heard.
OTHER WITNESSES: I was the only person out of three to observe the creature.
OTHER STORIES: After observing the creature, the next morning at breakfeast I took some heavy ribbing over seeing Bigfoot. A soldier came up to me and stated his father had been stationed at Ft Stewart during the 60's. This soldier was sincere in saying that his father had also observed what he thought was Bigfoot in the same part of the base as I had observed mine. He did not or I have forgotten and other details he provided.
TIME AND CONDITIONS: Approximately 2AM. Totally dark with maybe a little bit of lunar illumination. Can't remember about clouds.
ENVIRONMENT: Swamp with thick vegetation on either side of dirt road. Vegetation in area was approximately 10-12 feet at its highest

Spoke to the witness on Dec. 24, 2006. He is no longer in the military and works as a police officer.
His sighting was very short, approximately 4 seconds during which the creature crossed an 18 foot wide road. -
An important element for me is the uniform coloration he observed through his thermal sight. This confirms my own observation with a thermal viewer during the BFRO's March 2006 Redwoods expedition (Northern California).

The creature I saw was very tall and had a uniform heat signature. It had none of the bright spots seen on humans in clothes.
-
Humans in clothes (costumes would reveal the same patterns) show noticeable variations in surface temperature. Exposed skin stands out brightly while the loose parts of clothing are cooler and darker .

The figure observed with the thermal sight in Georgia showed the same characteristics I observed in the California Redwoods -- a uniform insulation density.

The base camp of the Redwoods expedition was adjacent to a canyon where sounds had been heard earlier in the day.

That night I was scanning the perimeter of the camp with a car-roof-mounted thermal viewer I observed a very tall figure walk to the edge of the camp, coming from the direction of the canyon where sounds had been heard a few hours before.

It briefly walked out into the open, albeit in the dark, then reversed direction and walked rapidly back to the cover of trees. It had the same smooth gate and pronounced arm swing seen in the Patterson footage.

From my position the figure appeared to walk by a bush which provided scale for a height comparison with a human. So the morning after the sighting I asked a 5' 7" person to walk the same path. The comparison from the same angle showed that the figure I observed the night before had to be at least 8 feet tall. The 5' 7" person was would have come up to the chest of the figure I observed.

Turn off Hwy 84 onto Old Hwy 84, go approximately 1 mile to fork. Hike into woods on left approximately 3/4 mile until you get to Ga. power line at a small creek. -
Description of event: My wife and my late brother and I were coon hunting. We had 1 coon dog and 2 young dogs that we were trying to train. The dogs would only go a short distance away from us and would come back. We kept hearing leaves crunching as if something was following us and heard twigs and branches breaking, but every time we turned around we could not see anything. After about 30 minutes of trying to coax the dogs, one of the young dogs went running by as if something had scared it and would not come to us. We turned back and walked back to the small creek. We stopped and listened and smelled a terrible odor. It smelled like a wet dog, sour pig pen, rotten onions and sulfur. I turned and looked back approximately 50 - 75 yards and saw 2 large red eyes. We saw something standing upright on 2 legs that was approximately 9 feet tall. It took about 2 steps to cross the power line into the woods.

Note first, how the Paulson Plan, which we will hereinafter refer to as PP (which is also a good acronym for Preposterous Poppycock), is a perfect example of Illuminist extortion aimed at stuffing a very rotten apple down the collective throats of our elitist marionettes in Congress, who, for the first-time in what must be over half a century, displayed some backbone in their denial of the initial proposal for the PP,

albeit that their nixing of the PP was most likely motivated by political opportunism more so than by any true patriotism.

First, we saw Bear Stearns assassinated this March as an appetizer.

The extortion got started with a bang on September 7, when Fannie and Freddie were nationalized, and then we were "shocked and awed" with a series of colossal commercial bank and investment bank failures, starting with the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers on September 10, at which time Merrill Lynch also went under and was purchased by Bank of America. Then AIG goes down on the 16th.

Out comes the PP on the 20th. Then, to keep up the pressure, Washington Mutual implodes on the 25th and is acquired by JP Morgan Chase, followed by the vaporization of Wachovia on the 29th, which is acquired by Citigroup in the hours before the first vote on the PP is commenced.

Now mind you that these banks have been insolvent from the outset of the credit-crunch in August of 2007, as we have reported to you over the past year.

And here we are, with Congress about to recess to campaign for reelection just before the vote in November, and suddenly the whole system, which until now has been kept in a state of suspended animation, comes down to scare everyone into accepting the PP. How blatant and churlish can you get?

Along the way, we also saw Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley give up their investment bank charters for commercial bank charters while getting bailed out with equity injections from various Illuminist companies.

Then banks and other financial institutions in Europe suddenly crumble, after unofficial weekend rumblings, with official announcements of bailouts/nationalizations made, right on cue, on Monday to bolster the PP, including Fortis (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemborg), Hypo Real Estate (Germany), Bradford and Bingley (UK), Glitner Bank (Iceland) and Unicredito (Italy).

Such drastically reduced prices will also become available at an ever-accelerating pace as financial and business corporations continue to collapse and go into bankruptcy.

After they have bailed out of all dollar-denominated paper assets, the Illuminati will let the stock and bond markets come-crashing down, the price of precious metals and other tangible assets will explode, they will clean up, and you, the sheople taxpayers, will get left holding the proverbial bag of worthless fiat paper for the nth time.

As the system implodes, the highly appreciated tangible assets of the Illuminists will be used to purchase property for pennies on the dollar as liquidations continue under the weight of what will be a complete systemic failure of the fiat money and credit system, after the elitists have had their fun.
