As
the clock strikes 12:01AM on January 1, 2010, Europe will enter a nutrition
science Dark Age. -
The stultifying effects of that backward movement
will hit food and dietary supplement companies hard all around the world. -
The movement toward replacing private choice with government fiat proceeds
apace internationally. -
Europe’s condemnation of food supplements
and claims about them is among the latest examples of that movement. -
The
nations of Europe gave up considerable national sovereignty to the European
Union a number of years ago. -
The members states have repeatedly reaped
the bitter fruit of that decision. One of those bitter fruits is about
to fall from the EU tree. -
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA),
established to preside over food supplements and claims for food supplements
by the European Commission, has determined that only a small percentage
of food supplements is sufficiently safe and bioavailable to remain
on the European market. -
Under European Commission regulations no food
supplement may be lawfully sold anywhere in Europe unless EFSA scientists
opine that the food supplement is both safe and bioavailable as “substantiated
by generally accepted scientific evidence.” -
EFSA makes that determination
in response to dossiers submitted from the regulated companies. If no
dossier is submitted for a nutrient either because the science required
cannot be obtained affordably or because no one has the resources to
pursue the claim, EFSA condemns the nutrient, deeming it inappropriate
for market. -
Thus
far out of over 40,000 dossiers submitted, EFSA has limited its authorizations
to certain vitamins and minerals and has rejected wholesale all other
vitamins, minerals, herbs and botanicals of various kinds. -
Moreover,
it has refused to allow claims of health benefit for a whole host of
products. -
These are the very same products that have been legally sold
in Europe for decades without any significant injury to the population. -
In short, EFSA is achieving a massive constriction in the product and
information offerings in the European marketplace to the great detriment
of European consumers. -
Fully informed consumer choice is being wiped
out. EFSA is dumbing down the European marketplace, ridding it of substances
that have improved the lives of Europeans and of emerging science necessary
to comprehend the potential health benefits of food supplements. -
This
draconian system of prior restraint over products and scientific speech
deprives European consumers of the right to determine for themselves
what food elements to ingest and what credence to give emerging science
concerning food supplements. -
Those decisions are now being made by EFSA
bureaucrats intolerant of dissent from their new state orthodoxy on
nutrition science. -
Its scientists presume to know better
than all private scientists, all food supplement manufacturers, and
all consumers what is in the best interests of those consumers. -
EFSA
is the nanny state writ large. -
Science, including nutrition science,
is evolutionary and open to debate. Scientists rarely agree on the extent
to which a proposition backed by studies is proven. -
Consequently, almost
all of the emerging science on which consumers depend to exercise informed
choice is based on credible, but inconclusive evidence. -
That should
not surprise us because almost all medical science upon which physicians
make life and death decisions every day is likewise in a realm of relative
scientific uncertainty (lacking conclusive proof to establish its efficacy). -
In steps, EFSA with its own brand of state certainty substitutes its
condemnatory judgment for free market exchanges, ridding the market
of nutrients and censoring from the market information indispensable
to the exercise of informed consumer choice. -
The
environment is one not of enlightenment or respect for individual rights. -
It is not far from the mind set that preceded the Renaissance, a time
when Copernicus waxed bold by declaring that he thought the earth orbited
the sun, not the other way around. -
The church of old, like EFSA, views
such claims of emerging science with considerable skepticism and so
censors them, depriving citizens of a chance to judge for themselves
the credibility of the claims. -
When
EFSA’s opinions become law through adoption by the European Commission,
European consumers are locked out of nutrition science debate. They
are deprived of emerging science and the right to exercise their own
judgment as to the relative worth of nutrition science speech offerings. -
Instead, state censors keep the vast majority of science out of the
market and permit here and there dribs and drabs to enter, skewing the
information marketplace in ways they favor. -
Thus, an elitist guard possesses
a monopoly on information access and deigns paternalistically to provide
the public a small sampling it thinks “safe” for European
consumption. -
This gross example of censorship offends the very notion
of individual liberty. Europeans are thus enslaved anew by an anti-Enlightenment
philosophy that regards government as the end all be all in the universe
of food and nutrition science. -
Depriving
European consumers of emerging science leads to decisions in the market
that either presume health benefits to be greater than they likely are
or conversely to be non-existent. -
When science is kept from the point
of sale, consumers tend to base decisions on non-scientific factors,
such as taste or superstition. -
We
should not think this matter limited to Europe. -
Not only do we depend
mightily on access to European markets for our food stuffs but we also
depend on European food stuffs here that may disappear as a result of
EFSA’s new draconian limitations. -
At
a time of recession when we can scarce afford new significant limits
to markets, Europe is eliminating a significant sector of its food supplement
marketplace. -
American dietary supplements will be blocked from import
and enjoined from selling dietary supplements all across Europe. -
There
will be resultant lost profits here and unemployment. Likewise, import
markets in the United States dependent on European food supplements
are going to be awakened rudely to the fact that products legally sold
before New Year’s are no longer lawfully saleable. -
Certain
ranking members of Congress and leading political managers at the Food
and Drug Administration are infatuated with the European example. -
They
would like nothing better than to replicate it here through harmonization
of American laws with those of the European Union. -
The
world of food regulation, like so much of the world, is now marching
steadily in the direction of state control and away from individual
liberty. -
Access to products with health enhancing features will be far
more difficult in Europe and in the United States in the months and
years to come. -
Nutrition science will remain locked out of the marketplace
to the grave detriment of consumers, causing only an information elite
to benefit from knowledge of how certain nutrients can extend longevity
and reduce the incidence of disease. -
This
process of bureaucratic expansion and assumption of jurisdictional control
over matters previously governed by individual private decision making
is an insidious encroachment that replaces freedom with servility. -
If
we can neither be allowed to choose for consumption foods and food elements
freely nor be allowed access at the point of sale to information concerning
the potential of those substances to extend longevity and reduce disease
risk, we can hardly call ourselves free. -
Europe’s
move back into a Dark Age in the field of nutrition science should alarm
us. -
Although we cannot but feel the adverse impact of the European restrictions,
we can only hope that the full brunt of the new Dark Age enveloping
Europe is confined to that continent, not welcomed here courtesy of
sympathetic agents in our Food and Drug Administration. -

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has proposed a pan-European security treaty to countries throughout Europe that appears to undermine the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at a time while he's pursuing his nation's own military initiatives which would be in violation of his plan, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

The Moscow proposal would intimidate countries that have expressed concern over Moscow's military assertiveness against Georgia last year but still are dependent on Russia for vital energy resources.

Medvedev submitted the "Draft Treaty on European Security" for "all states of the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian space from Vancouver to Vladivostok."

Its release was timed to coincide with the recent NATO-Russia Council meeting.

The draft includes international organizations and their membership, such as NATO, the European Union, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization.

"Consistent with past Soviet logic, it argued that an invasion that it had itself undertaken necessitated corrections to the existing security arrangements in line with Moscow's views," said Vladimir Socor of the Washington think-tank Jamestown Foundation.

"The document makes clear that the proposed mechanism is intended to disorganize, sideline, and potentially override NATO."
-
Written to "finally do away with the Cold War legacy," the draft, in effect, is a NATO override and is designed to undermine the Western security organization.

This is spelled out in Article 1 which says "security measures undertaken by any participant, whether individually or in the framework of an alliance or coalition, shall be implemented with account taken of all the participants' security interests in conformity with this treaty."

And then in Article 2, the draft further states that a participant "shall not undertake, participate in or support any actions or activities affecting significantly security of any other Party or Parties to the Treaty."

It further stipulates that treaty participants "shall not allow the use of its territory and shall not use the territory of any other party with the purpose of preparing or carrying out an armed attack…or any other actions affecting significantly (the) security" of the participants.

In effect, Russia as a signatory to the treaty could override any NATO decision, including decisions it has made in sending troops into Russia's backyard in Central Asia, or working to gain NATO admission for such countries as Georgia and the Ukraine.

Moscow has considered the proposal to admit the two countries as a redline to its own defenses.

In an effort to further tear down NATO, Medvedev's draft treaty includes other articles that lump NATO allies in with Russia.

An international human rights organization today announced it will pursue a civil lawsuit on behalf of parents who want to control their children's education and withhold them from explicit sex education and play-acting classes required by the German government.

Joel Thornton of the International Human Rights Group told WND the government in Salzkotten, Germany, is sending the fathers of the children to jail for terms of one week because they have refused to turn their children over to school officials for mandated sex classes.

According to a report from Richard Guenther, European director for the IHRG, eight families of Christians have decided to withhold their children from required sex education classes in Salzkotten.

Sex education classes in Germany are explicit,
-
and the issue is one of the major reasons why families – and not just Christian families – choose to homeschool their children even though the government has maintained its illegality since the days of Hitler.
-
The students who are being held out of sex education classes also are not being allowed by their parents to participate in a play-acting program called "My Body Belongs to Me," which essentially teaches children how to engage in sex, the report said.

Guenther reported that one father already has served his week in jail and is scheduled to be released this weekend, while the fathers of seven more families still are facing a similar fate.

The government already has imposed fines on the families, which continue to accrue.
-
Thornton said the families are being targeted with a "Bussgeld," a fine described as "repentance money" designed to show contrition for wrong behavior.
-
The families so far have refused to pay because that would be admitting guilt.
-
Thornton said the cases being brought against the families – whose names are being withheld for the protection of the children – reveal the dedication among German officials to punish parents who refuse to hand over their children to the state for education purposes.
-
The government's determination is evident, Thornton said, whether parents are objecting to an explicit sex class or whether the family chooses to homeschool their children.
-
"Unlike American officials, German officials do not recognize the right of parents to opt their children out of offensive classes such as sex education which overrides the parent's beliefs or desires for their own children," Thornton said.
-
"One of the reasons for this is that German officials view the children as belonging to the state, particularly during the time they are in school," he said.
-
So the IHRG has launched a new "radical approach" in Germany.
-
"Early next year, January or February, we will be filing a civil lawsuit on behalf of a number of homeschool families to try and force the court to recognize the rights of parents to control the education of their children," Thornton said.
-
"We will not continue to only react to these forceful actions by state officials against these families."
-
Michael Farris, who heads the U.S.-based Parental Rights website, said it's not surprising that the German government is reacting the way it is.
"They basically believe that the government knows best in every sector of life," he said.

He said the actions also align with the general international sympathy for U.N. protocols such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child,
-
which essentially gives children rights to make their own decisions on every facet of their lives.
-
He cited a case a decade ago when the government of Wales allowed parents to opt children out of sex programs and it was found to have been in violation of the convention because it did not first consult the children about their desires.
-
There's also no assurance that the U.S. is immune to such draconian measures, officials said.
-
WND already has reported on a California case where the judge called parents "bigots" for opposing homosexual lessons in public schools.
-
The parents were represented in California's Alameda Superior Court by Pacific Justice Institute. On Dec. 1, Judge Frank Roesch denied a motion to allow them to have their children excused from the lessons.
-
According to the group, Roesch blasted the parents for seeking enforcement of a provision of the California Education Code that gives parents a right to opt their kids out of health education.
-
Education Code Section 51240 allows a parent to have a student excused from instruction, "If any part of a school's instruction in health conflicts with the religious training and beliefs of a parent or guardian of a pupil."

However, Pacific Justice Institute said Roesch repeatedly insinuated that the parents are bigots.
-
In his opinion Roesch said the opt-out provision "is not reasonably construed to include instruction in family life education, but was intended to be more limited in scope."

WND earlier reported when the district was accused of violating federal law for approving the mandatory homosexual curriculum for children as young as 5 – without allowing parents to opt out of the lessons.

"We believe that this ruling against parents is inconsistent with the Education Code, and we are looking forward to continuing this battle until opt-out rights are restored on appeal, or the curriculum is changed," Pacific Justice Institute Chief Counsel Kevin Snider said in a statement.

Germany has been notorious for its treatment of parents decide to homeschool their children.
-
Just weeks ago, a mother and father in Archfeld were fined $181 for homeschooling their children by a judge who spared them the jail sentences demanded by the prosecutor, according to the Home School Legal Defense Association.
-
The organization has been monitoring and working on the case of Juergen and Rosemarie Dudek. The HSLDA previously reported the prosecutor had suggested only jail was a deterrent to homeschooling families.
-
But the ruling from the judge, identified only by his surname of Drier, said the parents were guilty under the criminal law in the German state of Hessen of homeschooling even though they were providing a good education for their children.
He fined them 120 euros, or $181.
-
"We recognize in our German basic law about philosophical and religious conviction and that parents have rights, but the basic law also includes that it is the state's role to educate all children," the judge ruled.

Practical Homeschool Magazine has noted one of the first acts by Hitler when he moved into power was to create the governmental Ministry of Education and give it control of all schools and school-related issues.

In 1937, the dictator said, "The youth of today is ever the people of tomorrow. For this reason we have set before ourselves the task of inoculating our youth with the spirit of this community of the people at a very early age, at an age when human beings are still unperverted and therefore unspoiled. This Reich stands, and it is building itself up for the future, upon its youth. And this new Reich will give its youth to no one, but will itself take youth and give to youth its own education and its own upbringing."

Wolfgang Drautz, consul general for the Federal Republic of Germany, commented previously on the issue, contending the government "has a legitimate interest in countering the rise of parallel societies that are based on religion."

Drautz said schools teach socialization, and as WND reported, that is important, as evident in the government's response when a German family in another case wrote objecting to police officers picking their child up at home and delivering him to a public school.

"The minister of education does not share your attitudes toward so-called homeschooling," said a government letter in response. "You complain about the forced school escort of primary school children by the responsible local police officers. ...

In order to avoid this in future, the education authority is in conversation with the affected family in order to look for possibilities to bring the religious convictions of the family into line with the unalterable school attendance requirement."

An angry Netanyahu administration warned the European Union this week that it is playing with fire if it goes ahead next week with plans to adopt a resolution calling for east Jerusalem to be the capital of a future independent Palestinian state.

“The process being led by Sweden harms the European Union’s ability to take part as a significant mediator in the political process between Israel and the Palestinians,” said a statement Tuesday by Israel’s Foreign Ministry.
-
The proposed resolution is expected to be approved during a two-day meeting beginning Monday of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
-
The meeting will focus on the Middle East peace process, and this week the Israeli newspaper Haaretz printed a copy of the draft resolution.
-
The meeting is one of the EU’s first acts under the Lisbon reform treaty that took effect Tuesday after its ratification by all 27 member states.
-
It is intended in part to give the EU a greater role on the world stage and provide for a more consistent and effective foreign policy after years of a presidency that rotated among members.
-
“It’s a way to inaugurate a new era in foreign affairs of the EU,” said Alfred Tovias, a professor of international relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
-
“It will give the EU new international status by making this important declaration of foreign policy.”
-
But Tovias said he believes Israel is making a mistake by “reacting hysterically” to the proposed resolution.
-
“It is badly advised to make such a fuss because if you pay attention to what the EU is saying, it is that the capital of a Palestinian state should be in east Jerusalem — but they don’t say where that is,” he explained. “And in my opinion they will not say it, because it is up to the parties to say.”
-
Tovias pointed out that not even Israelis are in agreement about the boundary between east and west Jerusalem.
-
“Some say it is Jerusalem before June 5, 1967, others say it is simply Abu Dis,” he said, referring to a Palestinian village east of the Jerusalem municipal border.
-
Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Blidt, whose country took over the presidency of the EU in July, is pushing the resolution.
-
Tovias said Blidt is “considered a friend of Israel. ...He could have been one of the two top leaders of Europe, which means the declaration has a lot of weight. Israel is obliged to take this into consideration.”
-
But Dore Gold, president of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and a former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, said he believes that any EU initiative “to prejudge the outcome of future negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians by determining the status of Jerusalem would undercut the entire peace process ... [and] raise serious doubts about any European role” in the peace process.

“The position of the State of Israel as enunciated by Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu is that Jerusalem must remain united under Israeli sovereignty,” he pointed out.

“Israel is not about to turn over the holy sites of Judaism, Christianity or Islam to the uncertainty of Palestinian rule.”
-
Gold pointed out that under a treaty signed by then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin and Jordan’s King Hussein, Jordan is to administer the Muslim shrines on the Temple Mount.

Asked how a Palestinian state in eastern areas of Jerusalem that were always Arab would adversely impact Israel, Gold replied: “The Palestinian goal in any diplomacy over Jerusalem will be the Temple Mount and not some innocuous villages on the outskirts of Jerusalem.”

“The eastern part of Jerusalem is like a checkerboard with black and white squares and you can’t assign different sovereignty on the basis of ethnic distribution,” he continued.

“There are Israelis who make the argument that they don’t drive in east Jerusalem, therefore what do they care [about it]. But that’s like saying you don’t drive to 135th Street and Broadway [in Manhattan] — traffic patterns don’t determine sovereignty.”

The draft EU resolution reportedly expresses concern over the inability to renew peace talks and says the goal of the talks is “an independent, democratic, contiguous and viable state of Palestine, comprising the West Bank and Gaza and with East Jerusalem as its capital. ...
-
If there is to be a genuine peace, a way must be found to resolve the status of Jerusalem as the capital of two states.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman flew to Europe this week for more than 20 meetings with European leaders to explain that Israel has taken steps to prove its interest in resuming peace talks. Among the steps is a 10-month freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said Lieberman would tell European leaders that the Palestinians are “not interested in negotiating with Israel, and their stated desire to achieve an agreement with Israel is mere lip service.”

But Yossi Alpher, an Israeli political analyst and co-editor of the Israeli-Palestinian Web site BitterLemons.org, countered that without east Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state, “there will be no peace process.

If Israel is not pressured into allowing it, there cannot be a two-state solution” that both sides say they want.

“It is clear that Netanyahu is not prepared to move on this at all,” he said. “You have Netanyahu defiantly refusing to take any action to stop the building of neighborhoods for Jews in east Jerusalem, geographically cutting off the [future] capital of the Palestinians. ... His position invites this pressure.”

In peace talks, Alpher said, arrangements can be made so that Jerusalem is not divided “if people live peacefully with one another.”

Alpher said he does not believe the EU action will bring the two sides back to the bargaining table.
“The process will only move if there is concerted American pressure on this particular issue,” Alpher said.

Someone had admired the Font-de-Gaume painting, copied it on stone, and had taken it home to keep as a memento, or perhaps to use as a model himself. -
Art was not only taught, but artistic ideas were conveyed from one place to another, sometimes over a considerable distance.

Likewise, the prancing horse of Le Portel in the Pyrenees has almost the same details and shading marks as the horse of Ekain, over 330 miles away in the Basque country.

A wolf and deer combination was also a favorite motif that enjoyed a widespread popularity among Cro-Magnon artists in southern France and northern Spain, copied again and again over a distance of several thousand square miles.

Many of the Magdalenian paintings are far more than simply representational—they show a remarkable degree of naturalism and even impressionism. Such a development was never accomplished by any of the succeeding ancient and classical civilizations.

Lewis Spence commented:
“What truly artistic mind cannot applaud the horse’s head from Les Espelunges, the clay bisons on the night-bound walls of the Tuc d’Adoubert, or the charging bulls of Altamira? Compare these for action, for motion, with the wooden immobility of ancient Egyptian painting or the crudity of the early Italian Old Masters, and you behold an art brimming with life and obviously proceeding from minds attuned to a veritable realism which at the same time is conscious of the value of inspiration, which has sized upon and pictured up the real in the spirit of the ideal.” -
Prehistorian Robert Silverberg describes the sophistication of Paleolithic art in similar words, and suggests what that sophistication implies in terms of the level of cultural development:
“The cave paintings are upsetting to those who prefer to think of Ice Age man as little more than an ape. Not only do they indicate great craftsmanship, but they point to a whole constellation of conclusions: That prehistoric man had an organized society with continuity and shape, religion and art. -
“It was also dismaying to learn that the earliest inhabitants of Western Europe had scaled heights of artistic achievement that would not be reached again until late in the Christian era. This explodes the theory of man’s rise from barbarism had been steadily and always upward.”

William F. Albright summed up modern research into Paleolithic art in this way:
“Though the number of motifs, techniques and media available to him now is, of course, immeasurably greater, it is very doubtful whether man’s artistic abilities are actually any higher today than they were in late prehistoric times.” -
The question is, how much of Paleolithic art was a product of the Cro-Magnons themselves, and how much did they adopt from a more advanced civilization—a civilization which supplied them with a cultural influx in most other areas of living during the entire Paleolithic period?

It is believed by many prehistorians that the Stone Age cave paintings were more than for art’s sake, that they had a meaning and a purpose behind their production.

One researcher who has perhaps done more than anyone else in the area is Andre Leroi-Gourhan. Beginning in 1947, Leroi-Gourhan decided to take a purely statistical approach to prehistoric cave paintings and began a systematic investigation of 72 groups of pictures in 66 caverns representing practically the whole of European Paleolithic cave art.

After years of recording and classifying, the Frenchman had collected 2,188 animals figures, distributed in order of frequency in this manner: 610 horses, 510 bisons, 205 mammoths, 175 rhinos, 9 nondescript monsters, 8 large-horned deer, 8 fish, 6 birds, 3 nondescript beasts of prey, 2 wild boars, and 2 chamoix.

Next, Leroi-Gourhan sought to find if there were any correlations between the types of animals, and their positions in the cave. What he found was significant: 91% of the bison, 92% of the bovidae, and 86% of the horses are pictured in the central positions—in pictures in the central chambers of the caves.

Only 8% of the hinds, 9% of the deer, 20% of the reindeer, 4% of the ibexes, 8% of the bears and 11% of the felines are located in the central chambers—the rest were found in the remotest portions.

Leroi-Gourhan also analyzed many of the abstract symbols that appear in cavern art, and the majority of these he found to be male and female signs. Again, he determined where these signs are located--and again he discovered a pattern: Over 80% of the female signs are in the center chambers, while only 34% of the male signs are found there.

After several more years of careful study, Leroi-Gourhan uncovered many additional correlations, all of which pointed to a curious division of the animal kingdom into a vast sexual zoogamy: Only certain animal types were coupled with either the male or female signs, and found in specific locations in the caves.

Eventually, Leroi-Gourhan discovered that there were altogether six distinct zones to the prehistoric cavern-temple: the entrance, ambulatory, central chamber, passages, side chambers, and end chamber—each with their own distinct animal types and sex signs, grouped in a complex system of order and arrangement.

The Paleolithic cave-temple was thus analogous to the Catholic cathedral, with its twelve columns representing the Twelve Apostles, and its Stations of the Cross always in the same order in respect to the altar and entrance.

We do not know, however, the true significance of the arrangement of the Paleolithic cave. But what we do know is that the complexity of the art testifies to a religious or philosophical view of the world of a very sophisticated nature--perhaps beyond our present comprehension.

Prehistorian Philip Stern commented:
“The men who lived nearer the beginning of time were still close to the natural world. Their reaction to it was more direct, and they were surely better than we in dealing with it. Just as a dog has a keener sense of smell than we have, the pigeon a better sense of direction, and the bat a far better sense of locating things, so may those ancient men have possessed powers that we do not know exist. -
“Since those posers are hopelessly beyond our ken it is idle to try to guess what they might be. It is enough to admit to ourselves that the painters who worked in the dark caves may have known more than we do about now forgotten things that were as real to them as radio and sonar are to us.”

Looking at the enigma of the cavern-temple and its mystic artistic arrangement, Louis Pauwels is more optimistic about unraveling the mystery and its implications:
“Let us admit the paucity of our knowledge and accept the fact that these prehistoric men have left us the undecipherable writing of a subtle and complicated idea, whose deeper meaning we can only guess at. But the very fact of discovering that it is writing, which to some extent is comparable with the writing contained in the art of the cathedrals, leads us to hope that we shall be able to decipher it one day. Then we shall lose the ’primitive’ man and find our brothers in the abysses of time.” -
One of the most important discoveries that came to light was made, once again, by Alexander Marshack. He found after seven years of intensive investigation that the image of the wavy line and zigzag line, very often seen repeated in bone carvings and in cavern art, represents the mystic properties of water, and that these images are directly associated with the female or mother figure.

Marshack also found that there is an important link between a site where cavern art is portrayed and the local water source—river, fountain, spring, etc.

As Marshack noted: “Every archaeologist automatically makes the assumption that near a river is where a site will be. But no one assumed that the river and water would also be important in the thoughts, symbolism, and rituals of the way of life of the hunter. It as only when the cumulative system was uncovered that the images began to make sense.”

But rather than just water, what Cro-Magnon may have been portraying are the earth energy patterns usually associated with water: Wavy, serpentine lines, as used in many later ancient and modern cultures the world over, is a universal symbol for earth energies.

This is further confirmed by the association of the wavy line motif with the Venus female fertility figurines, which are of the Earth Mother herself.

That her worship and respect was a key element in Cro-Magnon’s belief structure can be seen in the large number and the wide area over which the figurines are found—several hundred stretching over 1,100 miles from western France to the Ural and Carpathian mountains—

and the great length of time over which the figurines persisted—beginning 29,000 years ago down to 10,000 B.C.E., or for a period of nearly 17,000 years.

The standardization of the design of these Venus figurines shows a strong conservative and all-pervading consciousness regarding the Earth Mother, and her appearance along with the wavy line or serpentine motif indicates the exercise of her power through that symbol by her union with it.

Thus to respect her was to respect her powers, the earth energies, by living in accordance and balance with them.

On a piece of mammoth tusk from the Russian site of Mizherich are found two wavy lines, a row of X’s, branched marks and four ovals, which experts believe represent the local prehistoric topography, including four oval-shaped dwellings excavated at the site.

What is actually depicted are the ley-energy centers and water lines for the area, with the dwellings placed in the landscape in harmony with them, much in the same manner as in the Chinese practice of feng-shui.

Not only dwelling places, but Paleolithic caverns, regarded as the womb of the Earth Mother, were also selected by the presence of ley-line systems and energy centers contained within.

It was for this reason, which has been a puzzle for archaeologists, why only certain caves were chosen over others as temples for the magic art, and why in only specific locations within these caves does the art appear.

Long before the builders of the Megalithic Age, in a Golden Age far earlier, Cro-Magnon used the sacred power centers of the Earth Mother to find attunement with himself, with all others of his kind and with the planet.

It is also very likely that many of the so-called batons and other bone rods found within Paleolithic remains are examples of early dowsing instruments, with which Cro-Magnon pinpointed the earth vortexes and underground streams of power.

In one cave, located at El Juyo on the northern coast of Spain, prehistoric men went so far as to construct a stone monument over a sacred power center, anticipating their Megalithic descendants by many millennia.

Near the entranceway to the cave, in 1979 Dr. Leslie Freeman of the University of Chicago and Dr. J. Gonzalez Echegary of the Altamira Museum and Research Center, unearthed the remains of a 14,000 year old dolmen—a series of flat stones set upright supporting a huge stalagmite slab six feet by four feet by half a foot, weighing nearly a ton, which had somehow been moved from its natural position 35 feet away.

Beneath the structure were broken spear points covered with red ochre.

Farther down, the experts were amazed to find a four-inch layer made of columns of compacted earth arranged in a rosette, with one column circled by six others, the empty spaces filled with white clay and the tops of the columns covered with different colors of clay.

Directly beneath this rosette was a thin stratum of bunt animal bones, followed by another rosette.

Altogether, there were four alternating layers of rosettes and bone in a total of three feet thickness. Curiously, each rosette has its own unique coloring system—one has a red center with the outer six alternating in yellow and green, another has a black center with red surrounding it and with rays of black clay interconnecting them.

A few feet in front of the structure, Freeman and Echegary discovered a standing stone fourteen feet high, thirteen inches wide and eight inches thick which has the face carved into it of a half-human half-feline being.

As one enters the cave, the observer sees only the human side, but in darkness and from the reverse direction, with the light of a lamp, the feline features appear.

In terms of earth energies, the standing stone is on a major ley-line entering the cave, the stone amplifying the current, and projecting it to the dolmen and rosette construction, which is placed precisely over the point where the energies spiral into an energy center.

Somehow the configuration of stone, colored clay and burnt bone amplifies the power potential of the energy center.

The problem is, if the animals had been in the wild, exposed to predators, how could it have survived with a crippled leg? The only feasible answer, the experts admit, is that the reindeer must have been tamed, and protected by prehistoric humanity.

At three locations in the central highlands of Kenya, archaeologist Charles M. Nelson of the University of Massachusetts reported the unearthing of the bones and teeth of domesticated cattle, with dates analyzed at 13,000 B.C.E.

The bison of the Ice Age world were large and more imposing creatures, even larger than the modern American buffalo. If prehistoric man was able to domesticate these, as the evidence suggests, he would have had at his disposal a great deal of potential energy.

The bison may have been used not only for draught purposes, but could also have served as the Stone Age equivalent to modern cattle—an important source of food and hide.

The keeping of such animals, however, would have necessitated the development of some form of agricultural production, in order to keep these huge beast fed, especially during the harsh Ice Age winters. But did Stone Age man have the knowledge and means to grow crops?

A new study now being conducted involves the microscopic examination of Cro-Magnon teeth, in order to determine the type of diet he once had.

It is known as a fact that different diets produce different wear patterns on human teeth: A largely vegetarian intake, for example, requires more mastication than one predominantly of meat.

Conservative scholars, believing Stone Age man to have been only a hunter and ignorant of plant cultivation, were surprised to find that the teeth examinations so far reveal that Cro-Magnon’s diet consisted of both meat and grains.

At Duruthy, anthropologist Robert Arambouru discovered in Magdalenian IV layers remains of stone mortars and grinders, which appear to have been used to turn a local variety of grass seed into a palatable flour, probably used to make a kind of porridge, bread or cake.

At Duruthy were also unearthed a large number of tiny flint bladelets which, when examined by microscope, were found to bear traces of glue on the blunt-side edges, and a peculiar sheen along the cutting edges that can only have been formed from cutting grass stems.

Investigators are of the opinion that the curious bladelets had been cemented into a long-handled wooden or bone piece, to make sickles that were employed to harvest the grasses of the Oloron Valley.

The number and positions of the bladelets in the Magdalenian layers indicated that this harvesting had been quite extensive in scope, and took place over a long period, which suggests that the growth and supply of the grasses had to have been controlled and managed.

In several locations, Paleolithic soil strata reveal a sudden reduction in the number of tree pollen and a sharp increase of grass and herb seeds, indicating an increasing of grasslands at the cost of a forest.

From the charcoal and stone artifacts found in these layers, there is every reason to believe that the change of the environment had been caused by humans: They had formed clearings by burning down the woods. Today, we would call this process swidden, or prescribed burning, and was utilized by most ancient civilizations for creating new cropland and revitalizing grassland fertility.

In 1981, Dr. Fred Wendorf of Southern Methodist University found evidence at six Paleolithic sites along the Nile valley of the domestication of wheat and barley grains, with radiocarbon dates going back to 18,300 years ago.

The grain samples possessed several features indicating that the original plants had not been wild, but were deliberately planted and harvested. The sites also revealed the use of grinding stones and harvesting implements.

Not only did Cro-Magnon man harvest and eat ground seeds and grains, but he very likely possessed a wide variety of vegetables as well.

But in 1965, this theory was greatly upset when Chester Gorman, a University of Hawaii graduate student, discovered in the lowest levels in Spirit Cave, located in northern Thailand near the Burmese border, the domesticated seeds of peas, beans and various root and grain plants, all radio-carbon dated at 11,690 B.P.

Gorman also uncovered pebble tools, cutting flakes, grinding stones and pottery, all of which would have been involved with preparing vegetables and grains, in layers going back to 12,500 B.P.—or well within the time period contemporary with Paleolithic humanity.

This, in turn, presupposes the ability to construct calendar systems, and computations involving mathematics.

Recent findings indicate that Cro-Magnon man most certainly had such an intimate understanding of both the movements of the heavens and its mathematics.

We find among both Paleolithic cave paintings and various stone and bone etchings not only realistic representations of nature and everyday life, but also a great many abstract symbols variously called tectiforms, clavicorns and blazons.

Sometimes their forms are recognizable; other times they are not. These symbols are undoubtedly meant to convey ideas of some sort, and they thus may be considered a Paleolithic form of pictographic writing.

Curiously from as early as the Aurignacian on, these symbols appear, with no European precedent, and passed through stages where they developed from semi-pictures to almost pure “shorthand” abstractions--just as many scripts metamorphosed millennia later in the ancient world, such as cuneiform and hieroglyphs.

In many instances the Paleolithic signs are simply composed of a series of lines, scratches and dots in carefully planned patterns.

At first many prehistorians considered these series as only a form of decoration, but now they have been identified as notation—some purely mathematical, others of a chronological nature, marking off such astronomical phenomenon as the phases of the moon.

In 1964, American researcher Alexander Marshack published his preliminary findings on his study into Paleolithic and post-Paleolithic art that was to revolutionize modern theories of prehistory.
-
For almost a decade Marshack had scrutinized thousands of notational sequences found from Spain to the Ukraine. Repeatedly, he discovered many were mathematical equations, others were sequences of 29 or 30—pointing to lunar cycle observations.

The notation that first attracted Marshack’s attention was carved onto a bone tool handle discovered at Ishango, an early Mesolithic site situated on the shores of Lake Edward, in central Africa.

The notation appears as three columns of notches divided into numerical series: A(11, 13, 17, 19); B(11, 21, 19, 9); and C(3, 6, 8, 10, 5, 5, 7). In column A, all the numbers are prime numbers—that is, they are divisible only by themselves and by the number 1—and they are the only prime numbers between 10 and 20.

Column B appears to be an appreciation of the unit 10: 11 + 10 = 21; 19 - 10 = 9.

Both columns A and B are carved close together on the Ishango bone, and there is in fact direct relation between the two—the total sum of each is 60.
-
Column C suggests experimentation with multiplying and dividing by 2: 2 x 3 = 6; 2 x 4 = 8; 10 divided 2 = 5 + 5.

The addition of 7 to the column is curious, for it bears no purely mathematical relation to the rest of the column numbers. Marshack believes that 7 was added to bring the column’s total to 48, which happens to be the length of one full lunar cycle of 29 days, plus a lunar cycle of 19 days.

The two 60’s of columns A and B each represent two full cycles of 30 days.

Thus the Ishango bone reveals a knowledge of prime numbers, addition, subtraction, division, inter-relations between number sets, and careful lunar observations pointing to a prehistoric calendar system.

A truly astonishing specimen of prehistoric notation was found on a mammoth tusk from Gontzi, a late Paleolithic site west of Kiev in the Ukraine.

The notation appears around the edges of a flattened surface, marked off in graduated form, like the markings on a modern ruler. The markings are grouped along a horizontal line, divided into series by longer strokes at specific intervals.

There is also a number of symbols and figures appearing along the sequence, pointing to some event at those intervals.

Marshack analyzed the Gontzi notation and found clear evidence that it was indeed a detailed record of lunar phases.
-
What is more, the notation pointed to its being used as a calculator--that is, the moon events could have been predicted in advance.

The Gontzi bone was thus a scientific instrument of a high order, demonstrating that Paleolithic man was more than a pure mathematician and astronomical observer: He was also a scientist who had applied what he had discovered toward creating a workable formula that reflected the repetition he saw and measured in the night sky.

Marshack believes that many similar markings now being studied go several steps beyond.

A bone sample from Blanchard, for example, contains not only a complete lunar calendar with self-correcting leap days added, but also records the movements of Venus and Mars.

Other notations, particularly of 63-day cycles, are believed by Maria Losada of the University of Sussex to represent the ear emergence, flowing and ripening period of certain edible plants.

Still other markings may indicate the gestation periods of horses and other animals, and Marshack has identified more than a dozen such number set systems.

Professor V. Larichev of the Institute for History, Philology and Philosphy of the Siberian Academy of Sciences, reported a surprising discovery near Achinsk. Larichev observed:

“The sculpture is in the form of a rod carved out of a mammoth tusk I found in excavations of an old Stone Age Achinsk settlement about 18,000 years old.

A number of very fine depressions cover the sculpture in a strange manner. Sinuous bands of holes are interrupted below the middle part by a protuberant ring belt.
-
A painstaking transfer was made onto paper of the hole-depressions cared on the rod, of which thee were 1,032 in all.
-
The spiral curved bands in space consisted of a certain number of rows of points. A count of these showed immediately that the numerical combinations of separate segments here are filled with some kind of hidden meaning.
-
The first band which directly adjoins the circular base of the rod consists of four lines of depressions. The first three contains 11 points, and the fourth has 12 points, their total being 45.

In addition, the first hole in the first line from which the count was begun turned out to be unique from all the rest of the rod, being filled with a white paste.
-
The strips B, C, D, E and F contain 201, 165, 180, 162 and 279 points, respectively. By adding the number of points of bands D and E to 12 points from one of the lies of band A we get the number of days in the common annual lunar calendar: 180 + 162 + 12 = 354.
-
By successfully combining the 11 points with 354 days we arrive at a calculation of an ordinary solar calendar year of 365 days. And if we add instead another 12 points, we obtain a leap year of 366 days.

Using strip A, it turned out to be possible to calculate the length the stellar sidereal and synodic annual periods of revolution for five planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

“But even this is not the end of the story.

“Thus, in fact, the brilliant, deeply thought-out section of certain numbers allowed Paleolithic astronomers in Siberia to solve a most complex problem: to relate as one whole the calendar systems of five planets and the earth.

The calendars themselves and the characteristic order for the arrangement of the spiral bands on the surface of the rod shows the surpassing orientation of primitive man to the orbital-spherical reaches of space.”

One of the carvings showed the figure of a wolf partially surrounded by incised dots forming unusual patterns.

In the mid-1980’s, a series of carved bones dating to 26,000 years ago was discovered near Polesini, Italy.

Archaeological investigator Ivan Lee believes that the dots represent major stars of the constellation Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Serpens and Lyra as they would have actually looked in the night sky above Ice Age northern Italy.

The wolf image may be the portrait of what Paleolithic people saw these constellations as symbolizing—an early Zodiac sign.

The presupposes not only a long period of observation, but a body of astrological information and lore shared in common by many inhabitants over a wide area.

The prehistoric Wolf constellation may still be remembered in the Norse legend of the Fenris Wolf which at the end of every Age threatens to devour the Sun and Moon during their passage through the heavens.

In 1979, an ivory tablet—measuring 38 x 14 x 4 millimeters—was uncovered in a cave in the Ach Valley in the Alb-Danube region of Germany, showing on one side the figure of a man standing upright with raised arms in a singular pose, and on the other side are eighty-six notches. It dates between 32,500 and 38,000 years old, making this one of the earliest known depictions of a human being in Paleolithic art.

However, Dr. Michael Rappenglueck of the University of Munich believes that the figure depicts something even more startling, that it is an image of the constellation Orion.

The stance and proportions of the figure—particularly the slim waist, the upraised arms and the shorter left leg—all correspond to the pattern of stars that comprise Orion.

The figure even accurately compensates for the slightly different positions of some of the stars over the past 32,000 years due to a phenomenon called “proper motion.”

The German expert also notes that the eighty-six notches on the reverse side corresponds to the number of days that one of Orion’s prominent stars, Betelgeuse, is visible in northern hemisphere skies.

It also is the number of days that can be subtracted from a year to equal the average number of days of human gestation. In other words, this was a primitive pregnancy calendar linked with an astronomical cycle.

Dr. Rappenglueck was also responsible for discovering in the Cueva di El Castillo cave in Spain a prehistoric star map 14,000 years old of the constellation called the Northern Crown.

Prehistoric researcher Franklin Edge likewise has identified many of the animal paintings in Lascaux caverns as being astronomical in nature.

Inside the bull painting are other dots which closely correspond to the other stellar points found in the constellation Taurus.

Near the entrance to the complex is an image of a bull, and over its shoulder is a map of the Pleiades star cluster.

Another Lascaux scene depicts a woolly rhino with a peculiarly curved tail which corresponds to the hooked appearance of the constellation Leo.

Still another Lascaux figure, that of a horse, is now recognized to contain a sophisticated lunar calendar.

The mural figures on the east wall represent the constellations that were visible as the sun rose. On the west wall are the constellations that were visible as the sun set.

The authors started with a scenario based on a set of “plausible” parameter values—their basic scenario—and then varied the local interbreeding rate and, for example, the population size and location of Cro-Magnons, to produce eight alternate scenarios describing how Cro-Magnon colonization of Europe might have proceeded.

They estimated the likely proportion of Neanderthal gene contributions to the modern gene pool using “coalescent simulations,” which generate the genealogies and diversity of genes in local populations based on simulations of their population densities and migration histories.

The simulations show that if Neanderthals bred with Cro-Magnons without constraints over thousands of years, Neanderthal contributions to the modern gene pool “would be immense.” Surprisingly, the simulations also show that even a very small mixing should lead to high levels of Neanderthal DNA in modern humans.

What could account for this counterintuitive result?
-
Given a low population density with small local breeding populations, any introduction of Neanderthal genes would decrease the frequency of Cro-Magnon genes of that population; if these Neanderthal integrations take place as the Cro-Magnon population is expanding, newly acquired Neanderthal genes would also be amplified.

Since no Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA has been found in modern-day Europeans, the authors modeled the maximum number of interbreeding events that would support this observation.

The estimated maximum number of events, it turns out, falls between 34 and 120—extremely low values, Currat and Excoffier conclude, “given the fact that the two populations must have coexisted for more than 12,000 years.”

While the authors acknowledge their simulations suggest rather than reflect reality, their model does incorporate real historical data such as Cro-Magnon expansion over time and local population growth.

At a value of only 0.1%, their new estimate of the rate of interbreeding is about 400 times lower than previous estimates

and provides strong support that Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon didn't interbreed and may even have been different species.

The process by which the Neanderthals were replaced by modern humans between 42,000 and 30,000 before present is still intriguing.

In this study, we introduce a realistic model of the range expansion of early modern humans into Europe, and of their competition and potential admixture with local Neanderthals. Under this scenario, which explicitly models the dynamics of Neanderthals' replacement, we estimate that maximum interbreeding rates between the two populations should have been smaller than 0.1%.

We indeed show that the absence of Neanderthal mtDNA sequences in Europe is compatible with at most 120 admixture events between the two populations despite a likely cohabitation time of more than 12,000 y.

This extremely low number strongly suggests an almost complete sterility between Neanderthal females and modern human males,

implying that the two populations were probably distinct biological species.

Introduction
-
The “Neanderthals” or Homo sapiens neanderthalensis (HN) constitute a group of hominids, whose particular morphology developed in Europe during the last 350,000 y under the effect of selection and genetic drift, reaching its final form approximately 130,000 y ago (Klein 2003).
-
This subgroup of hominids populated Europe and western Asia until the arrival of the first modern humans, Homo sapiens sapiens (HS), approximately 45,000 y ago (Mellars 1992).
-
This arrival coincided with the beginning of Neanderthal decline, a process that occurred in less than 15,000 y and that is still not fully understood (Stringer and Davies 2001).
-
An important question which remains to be assessed is whether Neanderthals could hybridize with modern humans and if they left some traces in the current modern human gene pool.
-
While this hypothesis is excluded under the Recent African Origin Model (RAO), which postulates a complete replacement of former members of the genus by H. sapiens, it is central to the tenets of the multiregional hypothesis (Eckhardt et al. 1993; Wolpoff et al. 2000), which assumes a gradual transition from H. erectus to modern humans on different continents.

From a paleontological and archaeological point of view the debate is still open, even if the supporters of the RAO (Stringer and Davies 2001; Rak et al. 2002; Schmitz et al. 2002) are gaining momentum over those supporting European regional continuity (Duarte et al. 1999;
-
but see also Tattersall and Schwartz 1999).
-
Recent morphological studies support a clear distinction between Neanderthals and modern humans (Harvati 2003; Ramirez Rozzi and Bermudez De Castro 2004),
-
and genetic evidence, such as the clear divergence and monophyly of the HN mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (Krings et al. 1997, 1999; Ovchinnikov et al. 2000), suggested a long separation of the HN and HS female lineages (Krings et al. 2000; Scholz et al. 2000; Schmitz et al. 2002; Caramelli et al. 2003),
-
with a divergence time estimated to lie between 300,000 and 750,000 y ago (Krings et al. 1997, 1999).
-
The complete absence of Neanderthal mtDNA sequences in the current European gene pool, attested from the study of more than 4,000 recorded sequences (Richards et al. 1996; Handt et al. 1998) supported the absence of Neanderthal mtDNA leakage in the modern gene pool,
-
but it was argued that even if some HN genes could have passed in the ancient Cro-Magnon gene pool, they could have been lost through genetic drift (Relethford 2001; Hagelberg 2003).
-
Recently, several attempts were made at circumventing the drift problem by the direct sequencing of modern human fossils contemporary with the last Neanderthals.
-
Cro-Magnon sequences were found very similar to those of current Europeans (Caramelli et al. 2003), even though contamination from modern DNA could not be completely excluded (Serre et al. 2004).
-
All studies nevertheless agreed in showing the absence of Neanderthal sequence motifs among early modern human fossil DNA (Caramelli et al. 2003; Serre et al. 2004),
-
but only Neanderthal contributions larger than 25% to the modern gene pool could be statistically excluded under a simple model (Figure 1A and 1B) of instantaneous mixing of Neanderthals and modern humans (Nordborg 1998; Serre et al. 2004).
-
Thus, the problem of the genetic relationships between Neanderthals and modern humans remains fully open.

This model is spatially explicit, and the modern human population occupies a different range than the Neanderthal population before the admixture. Under this model, admixture is progressive and occurs because modern humans move into the territory of Neanderthals, a territory that shrinks with the advance of modern humans. -
In order to further investigate this issue, we have developed a more realistic modeling of the admixture process between Neanderthals and early modern humans.
-
In brief, the differences with previous approaches are the following (see Figure 1 and the Materials and Methods section for further details):
-
(1) Europe is assumed to be subdivided into small territories potentially harboring two subpopulations (demes): an HN and an HS deme;
-
(2) Europe is settled progressively by modern humans, resulting in a range expansion from the Near East. This range expansion implies also a demographic expansion of early modern Europeans, which stops when Europe is fully settled;
-
(3) local population size is logistically regulated for both Neanderthals and modern humans;
-
(4) we assume there is competition between modern humans and Neanderthals, resulting in the progressive replacement of Neanderthals by modern humans due to their higher carrying capacity caused by a better exploitation of local resources (Klein 2003);
-
(5) Consequently, admixture between the two populations is also progressive and occurs in subdivisions occupied by both populations, in a narrow strip at the front of the spatially expanding modern human population (Figure 2);
-
(6) coalescent simulations are used to estimate the likelihood of different rates of local admixture between modern humans and Neanderthals, given that Neanderthal mtDNA sequences are not observed in current Europeans.
-
The additional realism of this model makes it also more complex, and the range expansion and admixture processes will depend on several parameters, like the carrying capacities of the local populations, their intrinsic growth rate, the amount of gene flow between adjacent demes, the local rate of admixture between populations, or the geographical origin of the range expansion.
-
Since it is difficult to explore this complex parameter space, we used archeological and paleodemographic information to calibrate the values of these parameters.
-
For instance, the estimated duration of the replacement process (about 12,500 y, Bocquet-Appel and Demars 2000a) was used to adjust the speed of the expansion of modern humans and, thus, provided strong constraints on local growth and emigration rates.
-
Based on available information, we thus defined a set of plausible parameter values considered as a basic scenario (scenario A). Local admixture rate, which is the parameter of interest here, was then varied, and its effect on the estimated contribution of Neanderthals to the current modern human gene pool was recorded.
-
The sensitivity of admixture estimates to alternative parameterization of our model was studied in eight alternative scenarios (scenarios B to I), by varying each time the values of a few parameters.
-
Results
Expected Neanderthal Contribution to the Current European Gene Pool as a Function of Admixture Rates -
The description of the nine envisioned scenarios for the colonization of Europe by modern humans is reported in Table 1.
-
For each of these scenarios, the admixture rate, which is the parameter of interest in this study, was allowed to vary and only marginally influenced the cohabitation period and the replacement time of HN by HS (Table 1).
-
Note that the cohabitation period at any given place (shown as a narrow black band on Figure 2) is limited to 6–37 generations, depending on the scenario.
-
The expected proportion of Neanderthal genes in the gene pool of modern humans was estimated by coalescent simulations and is reported in Table 1 for different rates of admixture between Neanderthals and modern humans.
-
At odds with previous estimates (Nordborg 1998 ; Gutierrez et al. 2002; Serre et al. 2004), our simulations show that even for very few admixture events, the contribution of the Neanderthal lineages in the current gene pool should be very large (see also Figure S1).
-
For instance, in scenario A, with a 4-fold advantage in exploitation of local resources by modern humans, a single fertile admixture event in one deme out of ten over the whole period of coexistence between HN and HS should lead to the observation of 38% of HN genes in the present mtDNA HS gene pool (scenario A in Table 1).
-
This proportion would be lower but still amount to 15% if the advantage of modern humans was reduced to 1.6 times over Neanderthals with the same admixture rate (scenario F in Table 1).
-
With higher but still relatively low levels of admixture, a majority of Neanderthal genes should be expected in the current European gene pool (Table 1).
-
For instance, with as much as two admixture events per cell over the total coexistence period of Neanderthals and modern humans, more than 95% of the current HS gene pool should be tracing back to Neanderthals, for all scenarios with logistic demographic regulation described in Table 1 (scenarios A to H).
-
As shown on Figure 3, the proportion of current lineages that can be traced to Neanderthals is, however, not uniformly distributed over Europe in scenario of moderate or low interbreeding.
-
A gradient should be visible from the source of the range expansion (which shows the largest proportion of modern human genes) toward the margins of the expansion (the British Isles and the Iberian Peninsula), which should then be expected to harbor a larger proportion of Neanderthal genes than the rest of Europe (Figure 3).
-
However, this gradient would be relatively weak, and the expected proportion of HN lineages at any position is primarily affected by the degree of admixture between the two populations.
-
The finding that even minute amounts of interbreeding between Neanderthals and modern humans should lead to a massive introgression of Neanderthals' mtDNAs into the Cro-Magnon gene pool is somehow counterintuitive and deserves further explanations.
-
The successful introgression of Neanderthal mtDNAs is due to a massive dilution of the modern human mtDNA gene pool into that of the pre-existing population (Chikhi et al. 2002) and to a low probability of being lost by drift at the time of introgression (see below).
-
Estimation of Admixture Rates between Neanderthals and Modern Humans
-
The present results show that if Neanderthals could freely breed with modern humans, having progressively invaded their territory, their contribution to our gene pool would be immense.
-
Since no Neanderthal mtDNA sequence has been observed so far among present Europeans, it is of interest to estimate the maximum admixture rate between Neanderthals and modern humans that would be compatible with an absence of Neanderthal genes, accounting for the current sampling effort and genetic drift over the last 30,000 y.
-
This assessment was done by coalescent simulations.
-
We find that, depending on the scenario, these maximum estimates range between 34 (scenario B) and 120 (scenario E) admixture events over the whole of Europe , which are extremely low values given the fact that the two populations have certainly coexisted for more than 12,000 y in that region.
-
Our simulations show that the mitochondrial evidence in favor of no, or very little, interbreeding between Neanderthals and modern humans is much stronger than previously realized (Wall 2000; Nordborg 2001).
-
We indeed find that the current absence of Neanderthal mtDNA genes is compatible with a maximum admixture rate about 400 times smaller than that previously estimated (Nordborg 1998; Serre et al. 2004).
-
Taking into account the progressive nature of the range expansion of modern humans into Europe, the maximum initial input of Neanderthal genes into the Paleolithic European population can thus be estimated to lie between only 0.02% (scenario B) and 0.09% (scenario E) (Table 2).
-
It is also worth emphasizing that the final HN contribution to the European gene pool does not really depend on the size and spread of the population at the source of the range expansion (compare scenario A to C and D in Table 1). This is logical since the colonization process starts from a restricted number of demes at the edge of the pre-existing range in our model of subdivided population (see Figure 1C).
-
If this model is correct, it implies that the current European genes should have coalesced in a small number of individuals present in the demes at the source of the colonization of Europe,
-
Available data on European mtDNA diversity indeed support this view, since most European populations do present a signal of Paleolithic demographic expansion from a small population, which could be dated to about 40,000 y ago (Excoffier and Schneider 1999).

or, in other words, that there was a bottleneck having preceded the range expansion into Europe.

Apart from his fondness for haikus, and his giggle-inducing name, it's hard to think of anything interesting to say about Herman Van Rompuy, the first president of the European Council.

In fact, the whole point of the Belgian's election was the avoidance of color and interest: they were looking for a low-profile eurocrat with a record of patiently building relationships, one whose focus was internal rather than external.
-
As the Economist points out: "For all his merits, Mr Van Rompuy’s main experience of an international dispute as prime minister is the Belgo-Dutch row over the dredging of the River Scheldt."

But one interesting thing about Mr Van Rompuy is his Catholicism, about which he makes no bones.
-
He was educated (drumroll, s'il vous plaît) by Jesuits in Brussels, went onto the Catholic University of Leuven, and in the 1980s wrote a book about Christendom as a modern idea.
-
He is, in short, a bearer of the torch first lit by the Catholic architects of European unity-- De Gasperi, Schuman, Adenauer -- who, like Van Rompuy, were all Christian Democrats for whom faith and Europe went together.

In 2004, when he was an opposition deputy, Van Rompuy objected to Turkey joining the EU in terms very similar to those used by the then Cardinal Ratzinger (h/t to Tom Heneghan at Reuters, who puts the two quotes side by side):

namely that Turkey's Islamic character would dilute the Christian character of the EU.

That kind of talk makes me queasy. But I am impressed by a speech (in French) Van Rompuy gave on Caritas in Veritate which he carries on his website.

It shows a sophisticated grasp of Catholic social doctrine.

Dull he may be, but I for one am delighted that at the heart of the European Union is a politician who can write (my trans):

According to [Catholic] social doctrine, the political community is at the service of the civil society from which it is born.

Then he goes on quoting from the Book of Revelation and is posting a picture of Supriem dressed up like a king and wrote the letters 666 all over the image.

Since the beginning of March 2009 and throughout that month, I communicated back and forth with Michael Prescott, discussing the matters I am writing about here, and suddenly the communication stopped for a while.

Then, I received an email from one of my sources on March 4, telling me that Supriem shut down Prescott’s MySpace page because he thought Prescott’s presentation of Supriem was ‘too dark’.

And when I checked, the MySpace page was indeed down, so I emailed Prescott and asked about his sudden silence. I got a reply from him, where he said: “I’m sorry I have no comment about Myspace I neither confirm nor deny even having such a page…”]. The “new” Prescott was totally different from the one on MySpace. He was now less scattered, more focused and had changed his message quite drastically.

In a recent email from “The Prophet” he told me he hadn’t been in touch with Supriem since the end of 2008, but didn’t really explain why.

I tried to figure it out and consulted someone who should know about it. This is the short and simple story he gave me:

Prescott met Supriem when Supriem was proposing investments for the Supreme Council of 33rd degree Masons.
-
Prescott kept coming back to Supriem telling him he thought Supriem was the Messiah and that Michael wanted to spread the word. Supriem told him that was fine but do not ever contact people saying he’s doing it on Supriem’s behalf.

He said that’s not the way I do business. So the whole Prescott meeting, and they’ve only met twice, was for business.

After Prescott threatened Zagami, Supriem had enough.
-
Supriem even let Prescott try to redeem himself by being his liaison to the Governor of California’s office when Supriem was presenting a private bailout to them.

Prescott, once again, failed Supriem with his behavior and that was it!
-
I have further been told that Supriem totally disconnected from Prescott shortly after he had raged out against Zagami and didn’t not want to have anything more to do with him.

However, it seems like Supriem’s and Prescott’s destinies are to work together, whether they like each other or not, and there will probably always be a love-hate relationship between the two as we shall see later on in this book.

9, 1942 that Hitler’s Reichsfuehrer SS Heinrich Himmler in his
private office in the Brown House in Munich confided to Martin Bormann
(head of the Nazi Party) that while Germany may have to capitulate militarily,
“never must the National Socialist German Workers Party [Nazi
Party] capitulate. That is what we have to work for from now.” -
Relevant to this effort, Himmler organized everything right down to
the last detail regarding Nazis going underground and spreading throughout
the world to fulfill their plan, perhaps in two generations. -
Preliminary
work and planning was done by Himmler at the Gestapo building in the
Prince Albrechtstrasse, Berlin, -
and the major Nazi undergound movement
began May 16, 1943 at 11 Koenigsallee in Berlin under SS Generals Werner
Heissmeyer and Fritz Kaltenbrunner. -
Curt
Riess in 1944 also revealed that “[The Nazi underground] organization
in Argentina is all set up and waiting impatiently for the ‘go-ahead’
signal. -
Almost the same may be said of the numerous ‘collaborators’
in the United States.” -
Joseph Farrell (author of The SS Brotherhood
of the Bell and Nazi International) said that Bormann
had shifted $800 million in Nazi assets to Argentina, which was then
used as a great power leverage with western banks. -
In
Europe, according Adam LeBor (“Revealed: The secret report that
shows how the Nazis planned a Fourth Reich… in the EU,”
Daily Mail, May 9, 2009), there was a secret meeting at the
Maison Rouge Hotel in Strasbourg on August 10, 1944 where Nazi officials
ordered an elite group of German industrialists to plan for the Nazis’
return to power in a Fourth Reich. -
This information was provided in
U.S. Military Intelligence report (known as The Red House Report) EW-Pa
128 written in November 1944 by a French spy who was at the Strasbourg
meeting. -
LeBor writes that “powerful Nazi-era bankers, industrialists
and civil servants… worked for a new cause: European economic
and political integration.” -
The
basis for this plan had been developed years earlier, as on September
11, 1940 Reich Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels delivered a speech, -
“The Europe of the Future” to Czech intellectual workers
and journalists stating: “I am convinced that in 50 years, people
will no longer think in terms of countries…. In those days people
will think in terms of continents…. No single European nation
can in the long run be allowed to stand in the way of the general process
of organization.” -
In
the same year (1940) as Goebbels’ speech, Nazi Minister of Economic
Affairs (1937-1945) Walther Funk wrote a 16-page booklet, The Economic
Future of Europe, and called for a “Central European Union”
and “European Economic Area.” -
In 1942, Funk co-authored
The European Economic Community, in which he declared, “There
must be a readiness to subordinate one’s own interests in certain
cases to those of [the EC].” -
According
to the 3-page Red House Report (marked “Secret”) in 1944,
Himmler’s SS Obergruppenfuehrer Dr. Scheid (a Lt.-General) began
the meeting at the Maison Rouge Hotel and ordered German industrialists
to “make contacts and alliances with foreign firms, but this must
be done individually and without attracting any suspicion.” -
Sheid
also directed them to exploit the finances of those German firms that
had already been used as fronts for economic penetration abroad, -
and
he cited the American partners of Krupp, Zeiss, Leica, and the Hamburg-America
Lines shipping company -
(remember here that George Herbert Walker’s
and Prescott Bush’s Hamburg-America Lines transported Nazi Dr.
Ernst Rudin and other Nazis to the Third International Congress on Eugenics
in 1932 in New York where Rudin was unanimously elected president of
the International Federation of Eugenic Societies). -
LeBor
in the Daily Mail wrote that “as most of the industrialists
left the meeting [in Strasbourg], a handful were beckoned into another
smaller gathering, presided over by Dr. Bosse of the Armaments Ministry. -
There were secrets to be shared with the elite of the elite….

[Bosse] laid out the three-stage strategy for the Fourth Reich….

In stage 3, German businesses would set up a ‘sleeper’ network
of agents abroad through front companies, which were to be covers for
military research and intelligence, until the Nazis returned to power.” -
German
economist Ludwig Erhard had written that their industry could expand
after Germany’s defeat through supranationalism, meaning the voluntary
surrender of national sovereignty to an international body. -
Thus, Germany
(and France) were the primary advocates of the European Coal and Steel
Community (ECSC), which created a common market for coal and steel and
which would evolve into the European Union. -
LeBor wrote that “before
the common market could be set up, the Nazis industrialists had to be
pardoned, and Nazi banker and officials reintegrated. -

The mother of a six-year-old boy who was subjected to what a judge described
as “truly appalling” abuse from a man she had regarded as a close friend
said yesterday that her child had been “shaped and moulded” for life by the
experience. -
Welcoming the life sentences passed on James Rennie and Neil Strachan, the
woman said that she had moved on from feelings of anger. -
“My focus is about
my son, about how to support him and loving him for who he is. And who he is
now has been shaped and moulded by what’s gone on.” -
Rennie 38, the former chief executive of a gay youth organisation, was
responsible for “a colossal breach of trust”, Lord Bannatyne said at the
High Court in Edinburgh. -

He had abused the boy — identified as Child F —
almost from birth to the age of four years. -
He distributed images and films
of his attacks to a gang of seven other men. -
Strachan, 41, the only one of the gang with previous convictions for offences
against children, was shown in background reports to display evidence of a
psychopathic personality. -
One image that showed him abusing a baby left in
his care displayed all his basest instincts, the judge said. -
“By its very
nature what is shown in that photograph is utterly appalling and would shock
to the core any right-minded person who has had to see it.” -
Strachan was ordered to spend a minimum of 16 years in prison, while Rennie
was sentenced to a minimum of 13 years. -
Nearly 125,000 indecent images were seized during an 18-month police
investigation, codenamed Operation Algebra. -
Six men were jailed in June for
their involvement in the gang. All were respected members of the community,
as was Rennie, and they included a civil servant, a bank clerk and a church
bell-ringer. -

squad of 13 detectives who uncovered the gang. -
Their investigations required an international operation that stretched from
Lothian and Borders police headquarters at Fettes in Edinburgh and drew on
the skills of Scottish and American academics, FBI agents and Microsoft
personnel in San Jose, California. -
As a direct result of Operation Algebra more than 60 individuals have been
arrested in Britain, and according to police hundreds of offenders are
believed to have been identified in Britain and around the world. -
Significant operations are continuing in central Scotland, Sussex, the
Netherlands and the United States. -
Strachan, convicted of eight charges in total, was also found guilty of
repeatedly touching a six-year-old boy indecently. -
The jury found Rennie
guilty of 14 charges, including one of procuring his best friend’s child for
other men, an offer that Strachan took up. -
The men — along with Ross Webber, 27, from North Berwick, Craig Boath, 24 from
Dundee and John Milligan, 40, from Glasgow — were also found guilty of
conspiring to gain access to a child or children to commit abuse. -
After sentencing the mother of an 18-month-old boy abused by Strachan said
that she would never be able to forgive him. “The anguish I feel towards Mr
Strachan is indescribable,” she said. -
“I feel that no matter what punishment is given to Mr Strachan, it will never
be able to compensate for the hurt, devastation and great deal of stress
brought to me and my family.” -
Webber, Boath, and Milligan, along with Neil Campbell, 46, and John Murphy,
44, both from Glasgow, were sentenced to a total of 43 years in jail in June
for their involvement in the paedophile ring.

An enterprising security service or capitalist marketing specialist need only sift through veritable mountains of data available from commercial databases, or mobile calls, tweets, blog posts and internet searches to instantaneously identity "key agitators," to borrow the FBI's very 20th century description of political dissidents;

individuals who could be detained or "neutralized" should sterner methods be required.

Indeed, a surveillance scheme such as the one INDECT is building could greatly facilitate--and simplify--the already formidable U.S. "Main Core" database that "reportedly collects and stores--without warrants or court orders--the names and detailed data of Americans considered to be threats to national security," as investigative journalists Tim Shorrock and Christopher Ketchum revealed in two disturbing reports last year.

The scale of "datasets/annotation schemes" exploited by INDECT is truly breathtaking and include: "Automatic Content Extraction" gleaned from "a variety of sources, such as news, broadcast conversations" that identify "relations between entities, and the events in which these participate."

In conclusion, EU surveillance architects propose a "new annotation & knowledge representation scheme" that "is extensible," one that "allows the addition of new entities, relations, and events, while at the same time avoids duplication and ensures integrity."

Deploying an ontological methodology that exploits currently available data from open source, driftnet surveillance of news, broadcasts, blog entries and search results, and linkages obtained through a perusal of mobile phone records, credit card purchases, medical records, travel itineraries, etc., INDECT claims that in the near future their research will allow "a search engine to go beyond simple keyword queries by exploiting the semantic information and relations within the ontology."

And once the scheme is perfected, "the use of expressive logics ... becomes an enabler for detecting entity relations on the web." Or transform it into an "always-on" spy you carry in your pocket or whenever you switch on your computer.

CIA Gets In on the Fun

Not to be outdone, the CIA has entered the lucrative market of social networking surveillance in a big way.

Investigative journalist Noah Shachtman reveals that In-Q-Tel "is putting cash into Visible Technologies, a software firm that specializes in monitoring social media.

It's part of a larger movement within the spy services to get better at using "open source intelligence"--information that's publicly available, but often hidden in the flood of TV shows, newspaper articles, blog posts, online videos and radio reports generated every day."

Wired reported:
Visible crawls over half a million web 2.0 sites a day, scraping more than a million posts and conversations taking place on blogs, online forums, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Amazon. (It doesn't touch closed social networks, like Facebook, at the moment.) Customers get customized, real-time feeds of what's being said on these sites, based on a series of keywords. Although In-Q-Tel spokesperson Donald Tighe told Wired that it wants Visible to monitor foreign social media and give American spooks an "early-warning detection on how issues are playing internationally," Shachtman points out that "such a tool can also be pointed inward, at domestic bloggers or tweeters."

According to Wired, the firm already keeps tabs on 2.0 web sites "for Dell, AT&T and Verizon." And as an added attraction, "Visible is tracking animal-right activists' online campaigns" against meat processing giant Hormel.

Shachtman reports that "Visible has been trying for nearly a year to break into the government field."

And why wouldn't they, considering that the heimat security and even spookier black world of the U.S. "intelligence community," is a veritable cash-cow for enterprising corporations eager to do the state's bidding.

In 2008 Wired reports, Visible "teamed-up" with the Washington, DC-based consulting firm "Concepts & Strategies, which has handled media monitoring and translation services for U.S. Strategic Command and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, among others."

According to a blurb on the firm's web site they are in hot-pursuit of "social media engagement specialists" with Defense Department experience and "a high proficiency in Arabic, Farsi, French, Urdu or Russian." Wired reports that Concepts & Strategies "is also looking for an 'information system security engineer' who already has a 'Top Secret SCI [Sensitive Compartmentalized Information] with NSA Full Scope Polygraph' security clearance."

In such an environment, nothing escapes the secret state's lens.

Shachtman reveals that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) "maintains an Open Source Center, which combs publicly available information, including web 2.0 sites."

In 2007, the Center's director, Doug Naquin, "told an audience of intelligence professionals" that "'we're looking now at YouTube, which carries some unique and honest-to-goodness intelligence.... We have groups looking at what they call 'citizens media': people taking pictures with their cell phones and posting them on the internet. Then there's social media, phenomena like MySpace and blogs'."

But as Steven Aftergood, who maintains the Secrecy News web site for the Federation of American Scientists told Wired, "even if information is openly gathered by intelligence agencies it would still be problematic if it were used for unauthorized domestic investigations or operations.

Intelligence agencies or employees might be tempted to use the tools at their disposal to compile information on political figures, critics, journalists or others, and to exploit such information for political advantage. That is not permissible even if all of the information in question is technically 'open source'."

But as we have seen across the decades, from COINTELPRO to Operation CHAOS, and from Pentagon media manipulation during the run-up to the Iraq war through driftnet warrantless wiretapping of Americans' electronic communications, the secret state is a law unto itself, a self-perpetuating bureaucracy that thrives on duplicity, fear and cold, hard cash.

None is so interesting than the death of great nations, for here there is always the self destruction that comes before the final breakups and invasions. The European Commission has cited 20 of the EU’s 27 member nations for unacceptable budget deficits.

The year 2010 promises to be a rocky one for the world’s largest trading bloc, the European Union.

The latest shock comes from Greece, having revised its former deficit estimate for 2009 from 3.7% of gross domestic product to between 10 and 12%. That estimate is between three and four times the EU’s self-imposed limit of a permissible 3% maximum of GDP for EU economies.

Germany and France, the largest economies within the EU, have forecast 2009 budget deficit estimates of 3.7% and 8.2% respectively.

It is interesting to note that Germany, the prime mover for the imposition of the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact which limits EU budget deficits to that 3% maximum, has been one of the most consistent offenders, for years having posted deficits consistently above that figure.

At the other end of the scale – the smaller and weaker economies within the EU – concerns run even deeper. The Guardian reported that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has warned, “The countries of Central and Eastern Europe will enjoy only a ‘fragile and patchy’ economic recovery in 2010 and the region remains vulnerable to the sort of banking crises that hit Latvia this month” (October 15).

Latvia, which narrowly avoided complete financial meltdown a week ago, is estimating its 2009 budget deficit will reach a whopping 10%!

During a conference on banking regulation in Brussels this month, Nobel prize winner in economics Joseph Stiglitz observed that “the financial crisis is forcing the EU to re-examine its cornerstone policy area – the single market” (EUobserver, October 12).

“The current solution,” Stiglitz said, “which is to put undue burdens on those particular countries that followed the model of deregulation, is one that we might want to question.”

That is tantamount to questioning the very foundational economic policy upon which the European Union is founded.

EUobserver further reported that “The single market theme was later picked up by the EU’s economy commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, who warned that differences in financial regulation across the EU pose a dangerous threat to the bloc’s internal market. … Mr. Almunia said it was vital that the EU iron out its own in-house discrepancies or risk contagion to the real economy” (ibid.).

The financial and economic storm gathering in Europe is all grist for the mill to the elites who are currently busy developing the rules and regulations which, via the global regulatory authority granted to the EU-contrived Financial Stability Board (FSB), will soon impose its measures, not just on Europe, but on the world’s 20 leading economies.

The greater the impending economic crisis, the louder the call will come for global financial and economic regulation.

That call will be music to the ears of German-Catholic elites who are behind the push for global regulation by the fsb.

Each call for tighter financial and economic regulation simply brings us closer to the realization of their imperial vision of Europe – in reality, the prophesied seventh, and final, resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire. (Revelation 13:16-17).
