InBalance has been been developed by a team of European research and learning institutions.The purpose of the project is to support and develop adult tutors of numeracy and provide structured and engaging materials for learners of several abilities. InBalance is a realistic & systematic methodology based on the needs of individual learners & their practical everyday experiences.The InBalance website presents you with a European Numeracy Framework. It describes in detail European levels of competence in numeracy relating to real life situations. There is also a bank of learning materials & an assessment tool for you to use with your own learners; and an exercise maker which will assist you to create your own learning materials.
The objective of good math teaching should not be to "cover the curriculum" but to show students how to explore our fascinating and beautiful world through the lens of mathematics. We must change our focus in math education from a focus on a largely irrelevant and uninteresting set of learning objectives to a focus on making math relevant and engaging for students.
Maths4Us is a joint initiative between unionlearn, NIACE and National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) to encourage people to tackle numeracy, take-up numeracy learning and have fun with maths.
"By the end of this section, you will have:
* explored multiplication with your pupils through visual means;
* used rectangular shapes to help pupils understand factors;
* used investigations to explore patterns in number series."
"Allowing pupils to divide things into ‘parts of a whole’ using real objects helps them move more easily onto abstract ideas, such as fractions, division, ratio and proportion. This section will help you use simple physical objects and practical activities to develop your pupils’ understanding of these concepts. "
"By the end of this section, you will have:
* developed ways to use games to raise interest in mathematics;
* used a range of games to help enhance mathematical understanding and number skills."
A number chart of 100 is a simple aid for helping pupils see pattern in number, and can support a wide range of learning activities. Number charts can be used for young pupils to practise counting, yet can also be used for open-ended investigations with older or more able pupils. In this section you will help your pupils to understand mathematical concepts through investigational and group work.
"TESSA brings together teachers and teacher educators from across Africa. It offers a range of materials (Open Educational Resources) in four languages to support school based teacher education and training."
"it turns out that most people who consider themselves proficient at digesting number based health information, when called upon, often end up performing quite poorly on problems requiring numeracy." (thanx Johan 4 sharing this link)
We have several fun online interactive activities here to help you not only improve your mental maths skills, but also to help you with your SATs Revision too! These pages are aimed at 7 -11 year olds.
