Calculation Nation recently unveiled its tenth free online math game. Called neXtu, it starts with a tessellation consisting of hexagons, squares, and triangles, and challenges students to strategically place geometric pieces — or capture their opponent's.
Part of NCTM's Illuminations project, Calculation Nation uses the power of the Web to let students from anywhere in the world challenge each other. At the same time, students challenge themselves by investigating significant mathematical content and practicing fundamental skills at the elementary and middle grades levels. Each game provides parents and educators with an explanation of the math in the game and lists related resources from Illuminations.
"Allowing pupils to divide things into ‘parts of a whole’ using real objects helps them move more easily onto abstract ideas, such as fractions, division, ratio and proportion. This section will help you use simple physical objects and practical activities to develop your pupils’ understanding of these concepts. "
"If you walk down the aisles of your local mall you probably would get a third of the way there without coming in contact into a fraction in some way. After all, that walk down the aisle is a fraction: 1/3. Yes, we use fractions in one way or another in everyday life even though we may not completely realize it."
If you completely understand the concept of a ratio, you will see how far off you are. This tip serves as a quick tutorial on the subject of ratios and fractions.
Opportunity for children to practise doubles and halves, rounding, fractions and percentages.
