The year began slowly, as I explored the available software. The first software application I discovered was FreeMind. This open-source product was a good place to start, but its weaknesses left me wanting more. Next was ConceptDraw’s MindMap 4, which was a big improvement over the no-cost FreeMind. Then I installed MindJet’s MindManager 6 and things were looking brighter. Of course, it wasn’t long before the new, updated versions were released.

- I was excited about them too, but ultimately was disappointed in their limited functions.
- onceptDraw released MindMap 5, fixing many of the issues I had with version 4. A vastly improved product, I used MindMap 5 exclusively for several months, having only a few issues with the operation of the product.
- Then MindManager Pro 7 came out. This release by MindJet took the already industry leading mind mapping software well past the competition and straight into my computer. MindManager Pro 7’s new ribbon interface took some getting used to, but the advanced features were the big selling point. The bar had been raised.
- I now use MindManager Pro 7 daily. In fact it’s hard to remember doing without mind mapping as part of the daily routine.

The first challenge was just about finding the proper drivers. Apple, for some reason, do not make the necessary drivers easily available. The only way to get them is to extract them from boot camp. Luckily someone have already done this. You will need the KeyboardInstaller.exe and BootCamp.msi.

- After remapping your keys, which is really easy, you just reboot and everything works as expected. Keep in mind that you have to map both ways, Left Alt to Left Windows, and Left Windows to Left Alt. Do the same thing for the Right Alt and Right Windows too.
- I just want to mention that this works exactly as expected over synergy too. Even if you have your keyboard connected to the windows machine and use synergy over to OS X, it feels like it’s connected to the Mac because all keys work exactly like the native OS X keys.

- If you close your laptop, you can actually get the full resolution of your external display. Put your MacBook to sleep, connect your external display and an external monitor, and wake the computer up by pressing any key. You will have full use of your external display while your laptop is closed.
- the MacBook's keyboard and trackpad. Why you can't get into this mode using F7, I have no idea. This is a good technique for allowing some heat to dissipate while still using an external display so the lid of your MacBook doesn't melt or warp.
- don't forget to buy a mini-DVI to standard DVI adapter. The MacBooks don't have standard DVI port -- just the mini.

Some canned solutions (Wos2pajek, network workbench, bibexcel) are available for free,
Pajek for doing the analyses and producing those intriguing graphs of cliques and inner circles in Political Science. Pajek is closed source but free for non-commercial use and runs on Windows or (via wine) Linux. It is very fast, can (unlike many other programs) easily handle very large networks, produces decent graphs and does many standard analyses. Its user interface may be slightly less than straightforward but I got used to it rather quickly, and it even has basic scripting capacities.

- Pajek’s creators have written a very accessible introduction to social network analysis that doubles up as documentation for the program (order from amazon.co.uk, amazon.com, amazon.de. However, Pajek has been under constant development since the 1990s (!) and has acquired a lot of new features since the book was published. Some of them are documented in an appendix, others are simply listed in the very short document that is the official manual for Pajek. You will want to go through the many presentations which are available via the Pajek wiki.
- Amongst the stand-alone programs, visone stands out because it can easily produce very attractive-looking graphs of small networks
- Here is a rather messy collection of links to sna software. Generally, you will want something that is more systematic and informative. Ines Mergel has recently launched a bid for creating a comprehensive software list on wikipedia. The resulting page on social network analysis software is obviously work in progress but provides very valuable guidance.

All things being equal, a tech entrepreneur would love to brag that he is a Mike Moritz investee or a KPCB portfolio co rather than that of a “lesser brand”. And its not only for ego’s sake that this is so. It also adds instant credibility to a startup, which is so essential for a variety of stuff such as - the ability to recruit talented employees to landing follow on investments to gaining traction with customers etc.

- I still didn’t have any answers once I’d typed them all up, but it did me good to put them in a Word document, shove it into the personal development folder and leave it be. Today I can answer many of them, but this isn’t exactly what the article is about.
  
  If you often find yourself feeling down and frustrated and you think it’s because of the ultimate cosmic, psychological and philosophical uncertainty of everything…is it really? I mean, really?
- The Writer Suicides
- Of course while my frustration was just annoying and on rare occasions quite paralysing, it was nothing compared to what your average Nobel Prize for Literature nominee can go through.
- Yeah…but could it be, gosh I don’t know, that writers spend many hours every day by themselves doing something which is frustratingly difficult, for which they only get appreciation once it’s done, and often for very little money?
- Could it also be because creative writing (especially novels and poetry) seems almost designed to make a person miserable? The writer has to critically judge her work too, do 99% of the editing as the manuscript goes through several drafts and then it will probably get rejected by a dozen publishing houses before someone takes it on. And the work itself often requires the writer to be abnormally introverted especially for literary works.
- The cognitive overlap stuff is insightful but I think common sense has this phenomenon covered. Writing novels and poetry can be enormously fulfilling but there can be plenty of crap to wade through to get to there.

- Western psychiatrists, studying western people, have found that the religious ones tend to be happier than the secular ones. So couldn’t we logically go against the Buddha’s view and find a religion with all the answers that we like and, thus, become happier?
- Some zealously oppose them and become very confrontational atheists and others see them as useful allegories and still have a stake in religion while maintaining healthy scepticism about at least some of their religions’ scriptures.
- and as I grew older still I gradually dismissed all the Christian beliefs – except one: the belief in a supreme being. I became a deist, without knowing the word for it. I believed a God had created the universe, and I believed he was still around (unlike some deists) but I didn’t think he listened to our prayers, cared in the slightest about our welfare or had anything more to do with the universe beyond its creation.

- But the point is that by 17 I had written hundreds of thousands of words and also spent many hours reading articles on writersdigest.com and the odd ‘how-to-write’ book – learning about the practices of novelists and the rough workings of the fiction publishing industry. At around that time the frightening question appeared.
  
  ‘Is it possible I’m never going to become a published novelist?’
- That question threatened everything I thought my life stood for.
- It came up (and got louder and more insistent as time went on) because I was finding more and more that I didn’t want to write as much as published authors do. I initially scoffed at the idea of writing every day – there was no way I wanted to do that. And then I started to find that most professional writers do, and I uncomfortably felt that I had to. Not only that but setting a daily/weekly word count was a sensible practice, and I did so, only to find I really didn’t want to write for more than an hour a day. Given how slowly I write that was a really meagre number of words.
  
  Perhaps the biggest doubt is that I just don’t like reading fiction that much. I read the occasional novel, but I prefer stories in films and TV series and even in certain video games. Novelists are ideally, of course, book worms. Just like directors are film buffs and musicians are audiophiles.
- 70% of my time spent writing was unpleasantly difficult, 29.9% was flow and 0.1% was bliss (or extreme joy, if you prefer). My disinclination to read a whole lot also meant my skill level was almost stuck on a plateau.
- I answered the question: ‘yes, it’s very much possible I’ll never become a professional novelist.’
- And at first that was that and I didn’t feel much of anything about having answered the question – nothing positive and nothing negative. But without realising it I was becoming more liberated. I no longer felt I had to read x many novels per month or read author interviews or feel a little tense every time I heard some bad news or anecdote about the publishing industry. I could do whatever I wanted again. The future no longer felt guaranteed, but then it never had been. I had depended on something false, and now I had discarded it.
- Not long after that Sam was round one day. Having recently read Rich Dad, Poor Dad I was enthusiastically extolling the benefits of passive income streams. The subject of blogging came up (I think I raised it as an example of passive income) and Sam suggested we make our own blog. Well, it wasn’t something I’d thought of doing…but it didn’t seem like a bad idea at all.
  
  I found blogging was a lot more fun than writing stories had been, and nine months and dozens of articles later I’m still doing it. The funny part is I’m still writing creatively, of course, only it’s not fiction. Answering some frightening questions will liberate you even when you didn’t realise you’d been trapped.

- ‘Maybe there isn’t a God.’
- Answering the massive ones may not have a very specific effect on your life, but those answers will probably have the longest lasting effects.
- Growth
- And, of course, answering your frightening questions will help you grow. Accepting that I may never get a novel published widened my scope of the world that bit more, reinforced my understanding of the lack of guarantees in life and made me realise that I’m not meant, or born, to do any particular thing with my life.

- If you want to be more disciplined then what you want is to exchange spontaneity, impulse, desire and various other aspects of your humanity for mechanical efficiency.
  
  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – but once you make that realisation you can see that self-discipline doesn’t work the way it supposedly does.

- From Stephen King to Arnold Schwarzenegger – the most successful people tend to be those who put in an unusually high number of work hours and who, naturally, are regarded as highly disciplined people for this.
  
  They’re not.
- There is a lot of work, but it doesn’t feel hard for these people. The difficulties they encounter are compelling challenges, the competition they may have to fight is invigorating, the failures are learning experiences…but the one thing you can be confident these people don’t like overcoming is apathy.
- The Productive Life – Constant Discipline
- Didn’t happen. I could not fill the hours I ordinarily spent on recreation with more work. In fact, what happened was I would pace the house randomly and talk to myself more. I’d tidy up more frequently, re-arrange things, alphabetise things. When it came to doing work I got probably less done because I felt I hadn’t had breaks from it. I was taking breaks, but because they weren’t spent doing anything fun they didn’t feel like breaks.
- We don’t bleed oil
- What I forgot in my efforts to live the most productive life ever is that the only reason I wanted to do that was to achieve more and, thus, to be happier. ‘Happier’ – what is this event? It does not compute. We machines know not of this ‘happier’. Please enter a numerical value.
  
  No-one is an especially ‘disciplined’ person. The most successful people are those who have made successful behaviour routines.
  
  Routines are not followed by discipline either – once something becomes a routine you just do it regularly without thinking about whether or not to. You’ll see an article on routines in the next couple of weeks.
  
  Really successful people, those in that better place, have in part used discipline to found those routines, along with motivation and maybe fear as well. These are the Inclination Methods and you’ll see an article on those next week.

  The strategic decision by firm x regarding a plant location in country i in period t was captured by the dummy variable E(sub xit) which equals 1 if firm x locates a manufacturing plant in country i at time t, and 0 otherwise. There were 2,123 firm-country-years in which a plant location occurred. Among these, 422 included multiple entries by the same firm into the same country in the same year.
- Independent Variables
- Prior plant locations by other firms was calculated as the log of the count of prior plant locations by all the Japanese firms in our sample in a given country in each year.
- Prior plant locations by firms in the same industry was calculated as the log of the count of prior plant locations in a given country by all Japanese firms in the same industry group prior to the establishment of a focal firm's foreign subsidiary.
- Prior plant locations by firms in the same business group was measured as the log of the count of prior plant locations in a given country by all firms in the same business group (horizontal keiretsu).
- Consequently, imitation in plant location decisions by vertical keiretsu members is likely to involve a motivation to replicate domestic business relationships in a new country (Martin, Mitchell, and Swaminathan, 1995; Martin, Swaminathan, arid Mitchell, 1998), not the imitative behavior that is the focus of our hypotheses.
- Firm-specific uncertainty was computed as the log of the sum of subsidiary years of manufacturing experience in a prospective host country.
- The regional indicator variables captured time-invariant differences across Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Central America and the Caribbean, former British colonies, the Middle East, South America, and Western Europe.
- Modeling Procedure
- In the discrete time logit specification (Allison, 1984), H(sub xit) equals the hazard rate (the probability of plant location) for firm x in country i at time t. According to our hypotheses, there is a set of country- and firm-level independent variables (W(sub xit)) that determine H(sub xit):
