Open Minds, Open Books, Open Source :: Inside Higher Ed :: Higher Education's Source for News, and Views and Jobs

some libraries, fed up with software that doesn’t fully meet their needs, have decided to take matters, figuratively, into their own hands. With a bit of grant money and some eager developers, institutions have begun creating their own open-source solutions that are fully customizable, free for others to use and compatible with existing systems. The result has been a whole crop of projects that, when combined, could serve as a fully integrated, end-to-end open-source solution for academic libraries, covering the interface, search mechanism, database system, citations and even course management.

Perceptions 2007: an International Survey of Library Automation

The products of SirsiDynix, Unicorn and Horizon, received low satisfaction scores from libraries responding to the survey. Unicorn, the company’s flagship ILS performed somewhat better than Horizon. 14% of libraries running Unicorn and about half of those with Horizon indicate interest in migrating to another system--not surprising considering SirsiDynix's position not to develop that system into the future. Horizon libraries scored high interest in open source ILS alternatives. The comments provided by libraries running Horizon voiced an extremely high level of frustration with SirsiDynix as a company and its decision to discontinue Horizon. Many indicated distrust toward the company. The comments from libraries running Unicorn, the system which SirsiDynix selected as the basis for its flagship Symphony ILS, also ran strongly negative—some because of issues with the software some because of concerns with the company.

» About XC

The University of Rochester River Campus Libraries (UR) is developing a suite of open-source applications, called the eXtensible Catalog (XC), to provide libraries with an alternative way to reveal their collections to users.

With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, from the University of Rochester and from XC Partners, XC will provide easy access to all library resources (both digital and physical collections). XC will run alongside a library’s current Integrated Library System to provide more intuitive access to resources, a customizable interface to include Web 2.0 functionality, and seamless connections to other web applications, such as learning management systems, that a library may already be using. The XC Project is a collaborative effort between partner institutions that will serve a variety of roles in its development.
