Education Week: Motives of 21st-Century-Skills Group Questioned

"Known as P21, the group claims 14 member states as working to foster the adoption of new academic-content standards, professional training, and assessments aligned with those skills. It has influential allies, too, including the 3.2 million-member National Education Association. Former Apple Inc., executive Karen Cator, now the head of the U.S. Department of Education’s office of educational technology, served a term as chair of the group’s strategic council.

Top News - Parents: Focus more on 21st-century skills

"Although parents, K-12 students, and educators agree that using technology is essential to learning and student success, parents are largely dissatisfied with the technology skills their children are learning in schools, according to a new analysis of survey data released Oct. 29 by the nonprofit Project Tomorrow and Blackboard Inc.

According to the survey data, only one-third of parents and 40 percent of students in grades 6-12 believe that schools are doing a good job of preparing students for the 21st century. In contrast, more than half of principals surveyed believe they are doing a good job of preparing students.

"The disconnect between educators and parents reveals the need for schools to improve the integration of technology into the learning environment and students' learning experiences," said Julie Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow. "Parents do not feel that schools are effectively preparing students for the jobs of the 21st century, and [they] view technology implementation as essential to student success."

Parents said they believe teachers need more training and more access to up-to-date technology, and they support the broad adoption of modern, technology-infused approaches to teaching and learning, ranging from online textbooks to tools such as interactive whiteboards, laptops for students, computer projection devices, and technology-based organizational tools."

Top News - Film holds Ariz. school as model for reform

Leaders in education gathered Sept. 17 to discuss the future of American education and screen a documentary highlighting an exemplary charter school in Arizona, which filmmaker Bob Compton said holds the solution to the country's education problems.

"We're beyond education reform. We need an education revolution," Compton said.

The event also featured commentary from the Rev. Al Sharpton and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who are embarking on a tour around the country with Education Secretary Arne Duncan to highlight the Obama administration's efforts to reform public education, spur innovation, and discuss the challenges facing America's schools.

"I approach education reform from a civil rights point of view. I think the civil rights issue of the 21st century is education reform. I think the problem of ... inequality in education is an urgent matter," Sharpton said.

Gingrich agreed, adding that policy makers must convince people that education reform is important in light of new global challenges.

"We're going to try to convince people that there are solutions that will really work. And we're going to try to convince people that it is their duty as citizens, as parents, as members of the community, to get this to really work," he said. "We are not going to succeed in the world market with the current level of learning."

The film, "Two Million Minutes: The 21st Century Solution," showcased the accomplishments of BASIS Charter School, which has locations in Tucson and Scottsdale, Ariz. The film was a sequel to Compton's 2007 film, "Two Million Minutes -- A Global Examination."

Education and Learning to Think - Dangerously Irrelevant

Higher order thinking is nonalgorithmic. That is, the path of action is not fully specified in advance.

Higher order thinking tends to be complex. The total path is not “visible” (mentally speaking) from any single vantage point.

Higher order thinking often yields multiple solutions, each with costs and benefits, rather than unique solutions.

Higher order thinking involves nuanced judgment and interpretation.
