Since the 1970s, however, the Egyptian Brotherhood renounced violence and rejected Mr. Qutb's more fiery theories. He quit Al Qaeda when Bin Laden sent him a letter telling him to kill Jews and Americans. Narsi changed sides and then had about 300 Al Qaeda members jailed around his area of influence.

The United States has a standing agreement with Pakistan that CIA-operated Predator drones may strike Osama bin Laden's hide-out without prior permission from Islamabad, according to people familiar with the arrangement.
