Online Library of Liberty - Mises on the Foundations of Classical Liberalism
-
Human society is an association of persons for cooperative action.
-
Human labor by itself is not capable of increasing our well-being.
-
Now we wish to consider two different systems of human cooperation under the division of labor—one based on private ownership of the means of production, and the other based on communal ownership of the means of production.
-
The program of liberalism, therefore, if condensed into a single word, would have to read: property, that is, private ownership of the means of production (for in regard to commodities ready for consumption, private ownership is a matter of course and is not disputed even by the socialists and communists). All the other demands of liberalism result from this fundamental demand.
-
Side by side with the word “property” in the program of liberalism one may quite appropriately place the words “freedom” and “peace.
-
The idea of freedom has become so ingrained in all of us that for a long time no one dared to call it into question.
-
Before the rise of liberalism even high-minded philosophers, founders of religions, clerics animated by the best of intentions, and statesmen who genuinely loved their people, viewed the thralldom of a part of the human race as a just, generally useful, and downright beneficial institution.
-
What was astonishing was that one could hear these views expressed even by many of the slaves whom one questioned.
-
When those who recommended the abolition of involuntary servitude on general humanitarian grounds were told that the retention of the system was also in the interest of the enslaved, they knew of nothing to say in rejoinder.
-
There are high-minded men who detest war because it brings death and suffering.
-
It is difficult or even impossible to refute this line of reasoning on the part of the advocates of war if the only objection to war that one can think of is that it demands sacrifices.
-
The liberal critique of the argument in favor of war is fundamentally different from that of the humanitarians.
-
He is convinced that victorious war is an evil even for the victor, that peace is always better than war.
-
not as the defender of his homeland, but as the leader of an invading army intent on robbing a peaceful people of its freedom and possessions.
-
Civil war destroys the division of labor inasmuch as it compels each group to content itself with the labor of its own adherents.
-
If the division of labor is to embrace a whole nation, civil war must lie outside the realm of possibility; if it is to encompass the whole world, lasting peace among nations must be assured.
Cultural Diversity and Academic Achievement

All children will come to
school
ready to learn in school, and all schools will be ready to
teach
all children. -
ifferences in school performance lies in the difference in life
experiences between groups - the worlds in which children of
different
cultural and socioeconomic groups live do not encourage the same
beliefs
and attitudes nor do they emphasize the same skills.

local bookmarking or favorites, It is more advanced because you can
draw on others' bookmarks and tags. While higher order thinking skills
like collaborating and sharing, can and do make use of these skills,
this is its simplest form - a simple list of sites saved to an online

Virtually Present — But…….
-
There is a momentum that grows at conferences — it is sort of like the mountain top experience at a churchcamp — and I am looking most forward to seeing what happens when it is over. And most of all — I don’t want to hear what YOU are doing anymore……….smiles………I want to hear what your students are doing, what your fellow teachers are doing, what your admin is doing……..and I urge you to hold me accountable on that too.

systematic and systemic transformation. We are "improving on purpose."
-
In our case, the development and deployment of a district strategic plan was the basis for systemic reform from the boardroom to the classroom.
-
hrough community and staff forums, focus groups and individual solicitation, district leaders asked internal and external stakeholders questions such as, "What are the key challenges our district faces to provide an effective education?" and "What are the most important skills our students will need to be world-class learners?"

Jim Collins makes this point in Good to Great. Employees want to be a part of something successful. This concept is further explained in-depth by the book The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne. Anything is achievable if you believe it in both your head and heart.
To attain success for all students through high academic expectations and behavioral standards, we needed to include respect, involvement, encouragement and challenge in the school environment at all times. Staff desperately need, given the atmosphere of today's world, to be a part of the positive energy that exists when a group comes together and talks about its hopes and fears. It generates a power and energy so real that the greatest hope for your district will become a reality.

The City Hall and County Courthouse are located on Mays Island, an island on the river. Cedar Rapids is one of only a few cities in the world to have governmental offices on a municipal island.[1
-
The city is also an economic hub of the state and is at the core of the Interstate 380
-
Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Technology Corridor
-
Cedar Rapids is nicknamed the City of Five Seasons for the traditional four seasons and a "fifth season" which is "a time to enjoy" the other four.[7] The symbol of the five seasons is the Tree of Five Seasons sculpture in downtown Cedar Rapids along the north river bank. The name "Five Seasons" and representations of the sculpture appear throughout the city in many forms
-
In June 2008, the Cedar River surpassed the 500-year flood plain and placed an estimated 438 city blocks on both banks of the river under water. Nearly 4,000 homes were evacuated.[8] (see Great Iowa Flood of 2008)
-
Although many of these companies have been located in Cedar Rapids for quite some time, a larger number of high-tech industries are locating in or around Cedar Rapids because it is part of the Technology Corridor, a region of the state that also includes the Iowa City metro area to the south. Much of Iowa's technological businesses and industries operate from this corridor. Since a diversification of the local economy, the unemployment rate has held at a reasonable rate and wages are consistently among the highest in the state.

when Alva was six years old, he saw a goose sitting
on some eggs until they hatched. Being the curious youngster,
Alva sat on other goose eggs to see if they would hatch. -
Alva wanted to know
where grain came from so he climbed to the top of a
grain elevator. He fell into a pile of grain and started
to sink. -
In an experiment to
generate static electricity, he attached wires to the
tails of two cats and quickly rubbed their fur. This
experiment did not work. -
Alva then set up
a laboratory in the basement. He labeled his chemical
bottles "POISON" to keep other people from using them
even though the chemicals were not poisonous. -
n an experiment
to make a human balloon, Alva had a boy swallow Seidlitz
powders which give off gas when mixed with water. Alva
hoped the powder would mix in the boy's stomach and
create a gas, and this gas would cause the boy to float.
This experiment did not work. -
When Alva was 11
years old, he built a telegraph with his friend, Jim
Clancy. The telegraph connected their houses. Alva and
Jim communicated with each other by using Morse Code. -
Alva's curiosity
continued throughout his life and led to a lifetime
of experimenting and inventing.
Text of the Gingerbread Man | Free Audio Stories for Kids | Storynory
-
ONCE upon a time there was an old man, and an old woman, and a little boy. One morning the old woman made some gingerbread in the shape of a man. She added icing for his hair and clothes, and little blobs of dough for his nose, and eyes. When she put him in the oven to bake, she said to the little boy: you watch the gingerbread man while your grandfather and I go out to work in the garden.’
