Open Educational Resources and the Personal Learning Environment ~ Stephen's Web ~ by Stephen Downes
Downes Presentation - LTCWiki
Connective knowledge is based on pattern recognition of emergent phenomena in networks. In order for a pattern to have any meaning, therefore, it must be recognized. This means that knowledge formation in a connective environment is a combination of two elements: the perception, which is the pattern to be recognized, and the perceiver, who does the recognizing. Knowledge, therefore, is not uniquely inherent in a network, but exists only insofar as it is recognized to exist. This talk will explore this argument and its implications on a theory of connective knowledge.

Parts of this paper are drawn from previous papers (especially Connective Knowledge and Basics of Instructional Design, neither of which are published). Parts are drawn from talks and seminars. This is the best current version of the theory I could manage today. It is my hope that the ensuing discussion will add to the depth and the accuracy of the content. Please do not think of this as a definitive statement. There won’t be a definitive statement.
