Data theft: News updates / UC Berkeley

" 08 May 2009 BERKELEY — The University of California, Berkeley, today (Friday, May 8) began notifying students, alumni and others that their personal information may have been stolen after hackers attacked restricted computer databases in the campus's health services center.

The databases contained individuals' Social Security numbers, health insurance information and non-treatment medical information, such as immunization records and names of some of the physicians they may have seen for diagnoses or treatment.

UC Berkeley administrators pointed out that the hackers fortunately did not access University Health Services's (UHS) medical records, which include patients' diagnoses, treatments and therapies. Those records are stored in a separate system and were not affected by this crime."

  • “The network is a shared resource, and we must ensure that it is available to all users,” said Chief Information Officer Brice Bible. “Peer-to-peer file-sharing consumes a disproportionate amount of resources, both in bandwidth and human technical support.”

27B Stroke 6 - Wired News

  • A federal appeals court just shot down an attempt by confessed superhacker Jerome Heckenkamp to overturn his computer crime convictions, which were an end result of information provided by a university sysadmin who broke into Heckenkamp's computer to gather evidence.
The warrantless cyber-search was justified by the "special needs" exception to the Fourth Amendment, because "the administrator reasonably believed the computer had been used to gain unauthorized access to confidential records on a university computer," the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Thursday.

UCLA Probes Computer Security Breach - washingtonpost.com

  • The University of California, Los Angeles alerted about 800,000 current and former students, faculty and staff on Tuesday that their names and certain personal information were exposed after a hacker broke into a campus computer system.

It was one of the largest such breaches involving a U.S. higher education institution.

The attacks on the database began in October 2005 and ended Nov. 21 of this year, when computer security technicians noticed suspicious database queries, according to a statement posted on a school Web site set up to answer questions about the theft.

Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams said in a letter posted on the site that while the database includes Social Security numbers, home addresses and birth dates, there was no evidence any data have been misused.
