"The first challenge was to find talented people who know Big Data and analytics. Google might be able to attract armies of top-flight data analytics people for large-scale number crunching, but chances are that a small business is not going to be able to build its own analytics solution, at least not without help from a data analytics vendor. After unsuccessfully trying to hire in a very talent-constrained market, VinoEno quickly turned to an outside provider, Fabless Labs. In selecting Fabless, VinoEno was looking for an experienced partner that was not too set in its ways — one that was willing to experiment with solutions more suitable for small operations and not be unduly influenced by approaches that had worked for its deeper-pocketed clients. "reshmen. Only three of them came from Colorado.

These days, there are so many Coloradoans on campus that they're forming their own club. The class entering this fall will include 24 Colorado residents, following two years of 14 each in the freshman class.

Augustana’s dramatic growth in recruitment from Colorado is the result of a strategic marketing effort, embraced by several liberal arts colleges, to grow the college’s brand in the Denver metropolitan area, a region with few liberal arts colleges, skyrocketing public tuition, and significant growth in the college-going population. "Over the last ten years, Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) graduates have increasingly chosen to become entrepreneurs, with 16 percent of the class of 2011 starting their own companies to make an immediate difference. This figure is a three-fold increase from only 5 percent in the early 1990s and represents an all-time high for Stanford GSB.

"Despite an uncertain economy, more of our students are willing to take the risk of starting up new enterprises to solve problems, address unmet needs and positively impact society," said Assistant Dean and Director of Stanford GSB's Career Management Center Pulin Sanghvi. "It is a sign of hopefulness and opportunity for the U.S. and the rest of the world." "

"When we say “criminal justice jobs” different people have different ideas of what we are talking about. Some people see a courtroom in session and others see the gray walls of a prison. Still others might see police officers. The fact is that you are not restricted from the field unless you are a lawyer or security guard. The criminal justice field is one of the most rapidly growing career choices according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics and the range of different jobs that are available are simply staggering. A good example of the diversity in the field is forensics. You can work in forensics if you are not a doctor or finger print expert. There are forensic psychologists jobs, document forensics, computer forensics and many more. At the same time if you are an accountant you may work for the FBI, CIA or Homeland Security helping to trace the money of tax evaders or even terrorists."

The BLS this week premiered a new publication called Beyond the Numbers. This publication will serve as a source of timely, interesting analysis of BLS data and trends. Beyond the Numbers brings together the analyses previously found in Issues in Labor Statistics, Focus on Prices and Spending, Program Perspectives, Regional Reports, and OES Highlights. The first article in Beyond the Numbers, "International air passenger fares shrug off the recession," discusses how the price of international airfare changed during and after the recent global recession. The second article, "How new fees are affecting the Producer Price Index for air travel," examines how the introduction of baggage and cancellation fees affects the price of domestic airfare.

"The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.1 Produced monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the CPI uses a “market basket,” or a sample of goods and services that consumers purchase for day-to-day living, and weighs each item on the basis of the amount of spending reported by a sample of families and individuals. Widely used as a measure of inflation, the CPI provides information about price changes in the nation's economy and can be used by government, business, labor, and private individuals as a guide to making economic decisions."

"Student engagement represents two critical features of collegiate quality. The first is the amount of time and effort students put into their studies and other educationally purposeful activities. The second is how the institution deploys its resources and organizes the curriculum and other learning opportunities to get students to participate in activities that decades of research studies show are linked to student learning"

"Online learning is quickly gaining in importance in U.S. higher education, but little rigorous evidence exists as to its effect on student learning outcomes. In "Interactive Learning Online at Public Universities: Evidence from Randomized Trials," we measure the effect on learning outcomes of a prototypical interactive learning online (ILO) statistics course by randomly assigning students on six public university campuses to take the course in a hybrid format (with machine-guided instruction accompanied by one hour of face-to-face instruction each week) or a traditional format (as it is usually offered by their campus, typically with 3-4 hours of face-to-face instruction each week)."

"One thoughtful futurist at an elite institution, who is thinking about this model, told me that perhaps the alternative admissions method could feed a new school created at the university. That’s where these students could come, in person or virtually, for a high-quality education, perhaps for their first two years before moving into the traditional university to finish their degree. Or maybe the new school within the university would take them through graduation. There are plenty of options, many of which would allow these elite institutions to answer their critics—who want them to broaden enrollment as applications have skyrocketed—by expanding classes at the same time they maintain their quality and air of exclusivity."

"He added that corporate control of data could give preferential access to an elite group of scientists at the largest corporations. “If this trend continues,” he wrote, “we’ll see a small group of scientists with access to private data repositories enjoy an unfair amount of attention in the community at the expense of equally talented researchers whose only flaw is the lack of right ‘connections’ to private data.”

Facebook and Microsoft declined to comment on the issue. Hal Varian, Google’s chief economist, said he sympathized with the idea of open data but added that the privacy issues were significant. "
