What Does It Mean to Be Well Educated?
-
Meier has emphasized the importance of developing five “habits of mind”: the
value of raising questions about evidence (“How do we know what we
know?”), point of view (“Whose perspective does this represent?”),
connections (“How is this related to that?”), supposition (“How
might things have been otherwise?”), and relevance (“Why is this
important?”). -
To be well-educated, then, is to have the desire as well as the means to make
sure that learning never ends.

Girls also eclipse boys when it comes to building or working on Web sites for
other people and creating profiles on social networking sites (70 percent of
girls 15 to 17 have one, versus 57 percent of boys 15 to 17). Video posting was
the sole area in which boys outdid girls: boys are almost twice as likely as
girls to post video files. -
Girls are trained to make stories about themselves,” said Pat Gill, the
interim director for the Institute for Communications Research and an associate
professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.From a young age they learn that they are objects, Professor Gill said, so
they learn how to describe themselves. Historically, girls and women have been
expected to be social, communal and skilled in decorative arts.“This would be called the feminization of the Internet,” she said.
Boys, she added, are generally taught “to engage in ways that aren’t
confessional, that aren’t emotional.”Research by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard
Law School, the result of focus groups and interviews with young people 13 to
22, suggests that girls’ online practices tend to be about their desire to
express themselves, particularly their originality.“With young women it’s much more about expressing yourself to others in the
way that wearing certain clothes to school does,” said John Palfrey, the
executive director of the Berkman Center. “It ties into identity expression in
the real world.” - 2 more annotations...

Jenna Marston
It's always a sigh of relief when I stumble across an
athlete who is as sensible as they are skilled.
Principia's Jenna Martson
was one of the best softball players in the St. Louis area, a three-year starter
on the basketball court, and crossed the gender line to play baseball. The
Suburban Journals West County Female Athlete of the Year, Martson hit .610 as a
senior with 27 runs and 24 RBI, 10 stolen bases and didn't strike out once
during the softball season. She will attend the University of Missouri in the
fall.
As a point guard in basketball Marston ran the show as the Panthers
combined for a 32-18 record over the past two seasons. She was the team's best
free throw shooter and also led the team in assists (3.8) and field goal
percentage (49-percent) and despite never leaving the floor, Marston fouled out
of a game for the first time this season.
She started playing baseball at
a young age and was always an excellent pitcher. For her senior season, she led
the team with a .469 batting average, and was second on the team with 21 runs
and 17 RBI. Martson was second on the team in innings pitched as finished the
year 2-1 and struck out 11.
Her father, Bill, is a longtime baseball
coach so it's no wonder Jenna plays the game the right way. In speaking with her
you can't help but absorb her love and passion for baseball.
But more
than that, it seemed that this math-whiz has so much more going for her than
just what happens between the lines.
