The following IPC (Immigration Policy Center) report finds a department caught between the competing priorities of old broken policy and new reforms. While DHS has failed to meet key expectations in some areas, it has engaged thoughtfully and strategically in others, and has made some fundamental changes in how it conducts its immigration business.

I'm contemplating this survey wondering what they're going to do with the info. I find it more interesting to look at this survey now because I'm taking a course in survey research as part of my graduate sociology studies at Brooklyn College.

The fact that the SURVEY INSTRUCTIONS include sending a contribution to the DNC with the survey is something which deeply compromises the survey's validity.

But it's a chance to revisit the broad categories of policy they spell out. I volunteered in Philly for his campaign, and have very mixed feelings on the outcomes so far.

My negative views of the Obama administration are mainly centered around their continuity of Bush "war on terror" policies, especially the enforcement holocaust against immigrants and the refusal to prosecute those who committed torture and rendition. This survey doesn't have any possible responses to express that opinion.

  • On the immigration front, DHS has signaled a desire to "strengthen enforcement activities," particularly targeting "criminal aliens who pose a threat to public safety."
  • Some of that money will be directed toward the implementation of the Secure Communities initiative, which uses biometric data and a nationwide database to identify illegal aliens as soon as they enter the criminal justice system.

The advocacy website immigrationimpact calls Obama's approach to immigration "minimalist"...but says we shouldn't minimize the impact of his mention it in his SOTU address or judge his commitment by a "word count."
