Cheney: A VP With Unprecedented Power : NPR
Insights from reporter Bart Gellman's book on Cheney as Vice President

Washington Post reporter Bart Gellman, author of Angler, an extraordinary book on the Cheney vice presidency, reports that Cheney was a sponge for details and a skilled bureaucratic infighter. And, at least in the first term, he drove policy on the issues he cared about. In the second term, with a more experienced and wary President Bush, Cheney's influence waned but hardly ceased.
-
"You had the FBI director, attorney general, the next five levels of officials — which is a couple of dozen people — in the Justice Department, the general counsel of the CIA and the FBI, were all going to resign, in principle because they believed this program was unlawful," Gellman said. "And George Bush didn't know it until an hour before it was going to happen."
Faced with a wholesale resignation that would have made the Watergate "Saturday Night Massacre" look like a picnic, the president relented, withdrew his authorization and told Comey to fix the program to make it legal. Had he not changed course, according to Gellman, some of Bush's top aides believe he very likely would have been impeached.
-
"I think from that moment, Bush understood more clearly than before that he had to take Cheney's advice at arm's length," Gellman said. "That was the beginning of a gradual loss of influence by the vice president over George Bush, because Bush realized Cheney could lead him off a cliff."

Rove in civvies isn't such an ugly sight

Vendettas may be emotionally satisfying, but they rarely provide a formula for winning elections. In fact, the best way to get back at Rove is not through criminal prosecution but by forcing him to read an Election Night speech conceding that the Democrats have won back Congress.
-
The indictment of a president's closest advisor should not be a heads-it-will-be-leg-irons, tails-it-will-be-exoneration coin-flip decision. A banana-republic quality clings to nations that fight out all their political differences in criminal courts.
-
Fitzgerald, by not indicting Rove, may have saved the Democrats from getting too caught up in the politics of vengeance. There was always an analogy to Madame Defarge sitting by the guillotine knitting in the way that Bush haters reveled in every unreliable rumor about a Rove indictment.

Salon will continue to try to get to the bottom of charges of election theft in Ohio, but we don't think the available facts prove the election was stolen. We also think unproven claims of theft weaken Democrats' credibility and keep them from the work needed to build an electoral majority, as well as to reform the broken voting system that is at least one obstacle to that majority.

- "A new biography confirms that Colin Powell went along with the Iraq war because he was following orders. The tragic irony of the good soldier is that he deserted the people he was trying to protect." Article by Gary Kamiya. Sort of a review of Karen DeYoung's biography of Colin Powell, tho' Kamiya draws conclusions about Powell that DeYoung herself doesn't draw. It's not clear what in this article is Kamiya's opinion and what is DeYoung's. Still, an interesting composite interpretation of Colin Powell, one of the most tragic figures in the history of American diplomacy.post by krissanthesquad on 2006-10-12
Daily Kos: The OTHER Scandal Hastert Doesn't Want Voters Talking About

The actual location of the property has been the subject of debate--some say it's about 5 miles away from the proposed Parkway, others say it's closer to 3. Either way, the fact remains that Hastert's land--or rather, Hastert himself---benefited greatly from the Prairie Parkway pork barrel appropriation.
Indeed, it was just three months after the bill was passed that Hastert sold the property. Hastert maintains, of course, that the location of his property had nothing to do with his earmark efforts.

Employment Background Checks

- Bankruptcies after 10 years.
- Civil suits, civil judgments, and records of arrest, from date of entry, after seven years.
- Paid tax liens after seven years.
- Accounts placed for collection after seven years.
- Any other negative information (except criminal convictions) after seven years.
Under the FCRA, a background check report is called a "consumer report." This is the same "official" name given to your credit report, and the same limits on disclosure apply. The FCRA says the following cannot be reported:
-
In most states including California, when an employee's claim goes through the state system or the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB), the case becomes public record. An employer may only use this information if an injury might interfere with one's ability to perform required duties.
-
Bankruptcies. Bankruptcies are public record. However, employers cannot discriminate against applicants because they have filed for bankruptcy. (11 USC §525)
-
First, if the employer does not use a third-party screening company but, rather conducts the background check itself, it is not subject to the notice and consent provisions of the FCRA.
-
"employee misconduct investigations."
-
job applicants and employees who have undergone an employment background screening covered by the FCRA may receive a free annual file disclosure from the company that performed the background check.
-
My job doesn't require handling money. Why does the employer do a credit check?
Often employers use your credit history to gauge your level of responsibility. Whether a valid assumption or not, some employers believe if you are not reliable in paying your bills, then you will not be a reliable employee. Unfortunately, a bad credit report can work against you in your search for employment. For more on how a credit record can affect your job search, see the FTC's fact sheet on this topic, www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/ngcrdtalrt.htm
-
Yes. Under the FCRA, a background check that includes interviews with "neighbors, friends, or associates" about your "character, general reputation, personal characteristics, or mode of living" is called an "investigative consumer report." (The term "investigative consumer report" has a different meaning under California Law. See www.leginfo.ca.gov, Civil Code §1786.)
When information about you is gathered from interviews, the FCRA requires a separate disclosure. You are also entitled to know the "nature and scope" of an investigative consumer report, but you have to ask. For more on how the FTC staff interprets the term "investigative consumer report" and other keys topics under the FCRA, visit the FTC web site www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fcra/index.htm
-
And, you should not be asked to sign any document that waives your right to sue a screening company or the employer for violations of the law.

Aw, we know a lot of you really wanted SissyBear to take this one and truth be told, so did we. But you just can't deny that Christian has been hella entertaining the whole season and he's got an appeal that crosses a lot of demographics. Straight women either want to spank him and send him to his room or do their nails with him and dish. Gay men either want to spank him or go out for cocktails with him. The kids just love him because of his hep, swinging style. Straight men just want to give him a wedgie and stick his head in a locker but they don't matter since only about 12 of them watch the show.
