The case in favor of the open source enterprise database | IT Systems News - Betanews

One might argue that MySQL (ignoring the pending acquisition for a moment) is already mainstream, that the database has been commoditized, and there is a viable open source alternative to the dominant vendor. Not so. MySQL never challenged a major enterprise DBMS -- nor did it try to. The success of MySQL stems from the fact that it filled a market need that was largely being ignored by commercial vendors.
The low-end, low-cost database market had no incumbent, and MySQL quickly filled the void giving developers a quick and easy tool for quickly creating Web-based applications that were easy to deploy and to administer. MySQL is developer-friendly and is geared for programmers who typically build client-rich applications using Ajax, PHP, or Perl.

I have chosen to use an encrypted TCP port forwarding strategy to extend the customer’s network security envelope into the cloud. Specifically, I use an implementation of the ssh protocol that performs bi-directional TCP traffic forwarding across encrypted, compressed connections between cloud-based virtual instances and customer machines behind their corporate firewalls. The encryption strength is configurable, and is at least as secure as any corporate VPN encryption. This is another way of saying that it does not introduce any new network threats beyond what a customer already faces with their existing VPN technologies

vmware is almost exclusively used by SME, who are all windows shops.
My opinion is that the dominating reason for vmware being such a huge success is the nature of windows and the apps that run on it. windows server apps dont play nicely with each other, thus the resulting plethora of servers, each running one or two apps, all under utilised, with headroom for peak usage.
