LinkedIn: Answers: Can you recommend a good Windows 3D drawing tool to start a child off in modelling and animation? it must be rich in features an not too proprietary in its setup. A scaled-down version of a professional package would be ideal.
though Blender is excellent, its advanced and totally equal to the best of commercial packages. I would suggest a lighter product initially to first learn more about 3D and its many facets. Some free for use, packages like Wings3D (www.wings3d.com), Art of Illusion, Ogre, Genesis, DAZ Studio (www.daz3d.com) and DAZ's other options like the wonderful Hexagon and Bryce are brilliant to use at first. The end result of learning from these programs would be a natural migration to the higher end packages like Blender, the open source version of Maya and the like.
A definite introduction to a space of collaborative learning would be a teen account with Second Life (www.secondlife.com), the Linden Lab virtual world. There are fantastic lightweight tools in this virtual environment that encourages creativeness and learning to build and texture in 3D, all in a safe Teen Grid environment.
Best of luck with the learning ;)
