Luce Foundation Center for American Art - About
-
Luce Foundation Center for American Art
The Luce Foundation Center for American Art is an open study/storage facility displaying about thirty-three hundred objects from the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Center occupies three floors of the Museum's west wing.
Here, our visitors can see works that would otherwise not be on view due to space restraints in our main galleries. The dense display of paintings, sculptures, folk art and contemporary craft objects tells compelling stories and encourages visitors to make associations between works from different periods and in different media.

By drinking four litres a day of Earl Grey (equivalent to at least 16 cups of tea), the Austrian man was simply overdosing on essence of bergamot."

The Obamas Find a Church Home — Away From Home - TIME
-
Caldwell offered a prayer at Bush's first inauguration and in 2008 he officiated at Jenna Bush's wedding. By that point, he was an Obama supporter, even launching the website JamesDobsonDoesntSpeakForMe.com last summer when the Focus on the Family leader accused Obama of "deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview." Obama chose Jakes to preach the sermon at a private prayer service the morning of his inauguration and reached out to him to pray by phone on other occasions.
Valerie Jarrett on Going to Extremes, and 'Seedy Chicago Politics' -- Politics Daily
-
Jarrett praised New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, a Nobel-winning economist, as "somebody who is held out as a world expert who actually has taken the time to understand what's in the bills and who was critical early on (but) is now supportive. That says something to me about people who take the time to be well reasoned. And when you listen to people say on the extremes what's in the bill and it's apparent that they have not actually read the bill . . . "
-
"And so in the time that I see him in the course of the day I don't hear him complain about the extreme views. What I hear him say is what more can we do to create jobs. And that even temperament and ability to stay focused and not get thrown off course by either trying to play to either the left or the right is why I think he was elected. And he's doing the job he was elected to do."

Let's establish some ground rules here. You can either say a missing reflection is deliberate, or that someone is convincingly boating around in an upturned beach umbrella. You can't have both.

Welcome to Massachusetts Senator John Kerry's Online Office :: How Can I Help You?
-
Due to the overwhelming demand for tours of the Obama White House, the White House has adopted a policy that you must request a tour AT LEAST six months in advance. No request with less than a six month advance notice will be considered. An alternative to a White House tour is a visit to the White House
Visitors Center. The Visitors Center features many aspects of the White House,
including its architecture, furnishings, first families, social events, and
relations with the press and world leaders, as well as a thirty-minute video.
It is located at the southeast corner of 15th and E Streets and is open 7
days a week from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. For the most up-to-date information,
visitors are encouraged to call the 24-hour tour information line at 202-456-7041.

standardization leads to sameness, rarely to excellence. It's heartening to see some parents stand up for authentic reading.

a white paper by Carol Jago reminds us why it is important that students still be challenged by novels and longer works of non-fiction.

You emphasize the importance of not overteaching... How do you feel about Mark Forget's Max Teaching reading strategies??? He too emphasizes reading as much as possible, but also says it is important to have students doing activities before, during, and after reading. Is that overkill? Having students do a task for every reading assingment - before, during, and after.
-
Teaching Adolescent Writers this summer, and I plan on incorporating many parts of both books in my classroom. I went to your website and found your AoW from last week, which was great, but I was wondering, do you plan to continue to update the articles each week like you did last year?

How do we create a reading culture in our schools? Part 3 - English Companion
-
I usually do not discuss the article on Friday (unless it's directly related to what we are studying). I "grade" them very quickly. I scan to see the level of interaction and give them a score between 1-10. This is more of an effort score, which in my class counts far less than a skill score. I am more concerned that they read them than I am with grading them. As part of the year-end portfolio, students include an AoW section where they reflect on the year-long assignment.
How do we create a reading culture in our schools? Part 3 - English Companion

He makes the case that there are two things that can close that gap: direct instruction of academic vocabulary and a multi-year wide reading SSR program in grades 4-10. He makes the case (as do we all!) that wide reading builds those experiences, especially since field trips and other "enrichment" type activities have gone away. It's a short, powerful text.
LD OnLine :: The Use of Context Cues in Reading
-
Scientific evidence strongly demonstrates that the development of skilled reading involves increasingly accurate and automatic word identification skills, not the use of "multiple cueing systems" to read words.
-
Furthermore, many struggling readers are disposed to guess at words rather than to look carefully at them, a tendency that may be reinforced by frequent encouragement to use context.

This was the biggest wake up call for the world you could ever read. I read this book in less than a month. I read it in school, at home, even on my way to basketball games. It was just that good.

Amazon.com: Hip-Hop High School (Hoopster) (9781423106449): Alan Lawrence Sitomer: Books
-
McDonald, Sharon Flake, and Sharon Draper are better bets for inner-city kids conquering obstacles.
-
Although Sitomer explores the realities and challenges of urban African American adolescence, he strikes a fair balance between serious issues and more lighthearted fare, writing in a smart, conversational voice loaded with wit, rhythm, and energy. Some exaggerated characters and a fairly implausible ending do little to mar the pleasure of spending time with the dynamic and lovable Tee-Ay.

Bad Religion Leaves Big Bruises: When Christians Threaten Health Care Reform | Sexuality & Gender | ReligionDispatches
-
As with the Ayn Rand types, my question about misogynist Christians is just how Christian are they, really? I do not ask this facetiously. I am no church historian, but I do know that leading scholars are now in considerable agreement that women played very significant leadership roles as disciples, apostles, and teachers during Christianity’s radical early life.
-
Forgive the note of bitterness, but my word to American Christians who show more devotion to John Locke than to Jesus in respect to their “I’ve got mine” ideology:
