  • An SMS-email address is typically of the form @wireless-phone-carrier-domain. Here is a list of major US carriers and their SMS email address suffixes:

  • The major carriers in the USA in no particular order are Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Cingular. There are also a number of smaller carriers (and sub-carriers) such as Virgin.

There used to be a few others that no longer exist: The carrier formerly known as Nextel was merged into Sprint, and the carrier formerly known as AT&T Wireless was absorbed by Cingular. Finally, when T-Mobile started operations in the US, they took over the Voicestream network.

    The Technologies

There are two main cellular technologies being used in the USA: They are known as GSM and CDMA. It doesn't really matter what the acronyms stand for.

Here's how it breaks down by carrier:
    Sprint CDMA
    Verizon CDMA
    T-Mobile GSM
    Cingular GSM

CDMA is no longer widely used outside of the States, with Europe and Asia being predominantly (if not entirely) GSM. If you want a cell phone that works outside of the USA, get a GSM phone, end of story.

The defining aspect of GSM networks is the "SIM Card". This tiny card is what actually contains your phone number and associated network credentials, and can be moved from phone-to-phone without having to involve the carrier. (Note that the phone must either be from the same carrier or "unlocked" for this to work.)

Things aren't so easy in CDMA land. To move your phone number from one handset to another, you must provide the carrier with the ESNs (electronic serial numbers) of the two phones, so they can transfer the activation.

Why go CDMA at all? Well, CDMA has been around longer in this country, and thus has a more pervasive network. In the US, you can often get a strong signal on a CDMA phone in places you would barely get a signal (if at all) on a GSM phone. Verizon's not kidding with those "can you hear me now?" ads. The CDMA network is much wider, but it comes at the cost of generally not being able to use your phone outside of the US. If you rarely leave major metropolitan areas, GSM will probably cover you fine, except for the occ

Segovia's Aqueduct And Alcázar Draw The Visitors

  • . For some 2,000 years, this hulking aqueduct brought potable water to the city from the Frio River, 16 km (10 mi) away.

The water flows through an underground channel until it reaches the freestanding section of the aqueduct. This consists of 166 arches, supported by 120 pillars, which cover a distance of 1 km (.6 mi). Divided into two tiers, the arches rise to a height of 28 m (100.5 ft), ending at the Plaza Azoguejo. The 20,400 granite massive blocks of the aqueduct are laid without mortar or metal clamps. They are held together by the pressure of the keystones - a perfect equilibrium of forces.

The two-tiered part of the aqueduct is known as 'bridge of the Devil'. According to popular legend, the aqueduct was almost built in a single night by the Devil, trying to win, in the darkness, the soul of Juanilla - a sleeping Segovian water-seller. Jolted by an inner feeling, she awoke to find that the aqueduct was almost complete. To save her soul, she fervently prayed to the Virgin Mary. The Virgin answered her prayers and made the sun rise earlier to foil the Devil's plans. Hence, she saved her soul since the Devil did not complete the aqueduct. However, legends aside, the aqueduct is a work of exceptional beauty, giving Segovia a unique aura.

Sling Media Slingbox - CompUSA.com

  • A SlingLink™ is a convenient way to connect your Slingbox to the Internet. If you’re like most people, you don’t have an ethernet jack right next to your television. Rather than running long wires all around your house, or having an expensive technician re-wire your home, you can just purchase a pair of SlingLink adapters.

Like an extension cord for the Internet, the SlingLink uses your home’s existing electrical wiring to transmit the ethernet signal from your router. Plug one SlingLink into the wall near your router, and plug in the other SlingLink wherever you have your Slingbox installed. Voila – your Slingbox is connected to the Internet!

Best of all, the SlingLink does not impact the performance of your network. It simply placeshifts your home’s Internet connection from your office to another household room via your electrical wiring. Now wherever you have a wall socket, you can have the same broadband connection - without installing any new wires or outlets.

Wireless Networking: WPA and WPA2

using airport express to extend Airport Extreme Base Station

Wireless issues

  • AirPort Extreme Base Station upstairs connected to my DSL modem. The AirPort Express is downstairs and it is configured to extend the wireless network with WDS. I have an Ethernet cable going from the AirPort Express to my roommate's gaming PC because it doesn't have room for a wireless card (it is a Shuttle SFF computer).

I had a real headache setting everything up so that the network would use WPA security with WDS enabled. The way that I got everything to work correctly is I returned the AirPort Express to factory settings. I then configured the AirPort Extreme Base Station to use WPA and be the WDS main station (this may not be the correct terminology for the WDS configuration but I'm at school right now so I can't bring up the configuration window). Then you can have the AirPort Admin Utility automatically configure the Airport Express to extend the network and to use WPA.

So as you walk around the house there is only one network name and one WPA password to access the wireless network (strong signal downstairs and strong signal upstairs).
