An SMS-email address is typically of the form @wireless-phone-carrier-domain. Here is a list of major US carriers and their SMS email address suffixes:

The major carriers in the USA in no particular order are Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Cingular. There are also a number of smaller carriers (and sub-carriers) such as Virgin.

There used to be a few others that no longer exist: The carrier formerly known as Nextel was merged into Sprint, and the carrier formerly known as AT&T Wireless was absorbed by Cingular. Finally, when T-Mobile started operations in the US, they took over the Voicestream network.

The Technologies

There are two main cellular technologies being used in the USA: They are known as GSM and CDMA. It doesn't really matter what the acronyms stand for.

Here's how it breaks down by carrier:
Sprint CDMA
Verizon CDMA
T-Mobile GSM
Cingular GSM

CDMA is no longer widely used outside of the States, with Europe and Asia being predominantly (if not entirely) GSM. If you want a cell phone that works outside of the USA, get a GSM phone, end of story.

The defining aspect of GSM networks is the "SIM Card". This tiny card is what actually contains your phone number and associated network credentials, and can be moved from phone-to-phone without having to involve the carrier. (Note that the phone must either be from the same carrier or "unlocked" for this to work.)

Things aren't so easy in CDMA land. To move your phone number from one handset to another, you must provide the carrier with the ESNs (electronic serial numbers) of the two phones, so they can transfer the activation.

Why go CDMA at all? Well, CDMA has been around longer in this country, and thus has a more pervasive network. In the US, you can often get a strong signal on a CDMA phone in places you would barely get a signal (if at all) on a GSM phone. Verizon's not kidding with those "can you hear me now?" ads. The CDMA network is much wider, but it comes at the cost of generally not being able to use your phone outside of the US. If you rarely leave major metropolitan areas, GSM will probably cover you fine, except for the occ

WPA, AirPort Extreme and Linksys WAP54G

AirPort Extreme Base Station upstairs connected to my DSL modem. The AirPort Express is downstairs and it is configured to extend the wireless network with WDS. I have an Ethernet cable going from the AirPort Express to my roommate's gaming PC because it doesn't have room for a wireless card (it is a Shuttle SFF computer).

I had a real headache setting everything up so that the network would use WPA security with WDS enabled. The way that I got everything to work correctly is I returned the AirPort Express to factory settings. I then configured the AirPort Extreme Base Station to use WPA and be the WDS main station (this may not be the correct terminology for the WDS configuration but I'm at school right now so I can't bring up the configuration window). Then you can have the AirPort Admin Utility automatically configure the Airport Express to extend the network and to use WPA.

So as you walk around the house there is only one network name and one WPA password to access the wireless network (strong signal downstairs and strong signal upstairs).

While private interests deploy services to customers based upon a revenue/profit-maximizing algorithm (H* in the graph below), municipalities and public-private partnerships are capable of taking into account the maximization of the social benefits of these systems, and thus are willing to offer services to more residents (H' in the graph below).
