asahi polyketones

  • R&D on new materials is directed toward the development of unique products
which will elicit new demand. A pilot plant for polyketone filament started up
at the beginning of 2006, with samples supplied to users for evaluation.

  • As for polyketone fiber, the company has decided to introduce pilot equipment in
October 2005. Asahi Kasei's concept in the background is: "The future is unknown
at this time, but we need new materials and new business areas for the future."

market polyketone shell bp report

  • The news comes as a report by RM Kossoff & Associates, New York, claims that
the polymer's price will have to come down to around a third of its current
price before it will be widely accepted as a replacement for engineering
    plastics.
  • Industry observers believe this is possible, as raw materials are cheap and
process improvements are being effected for the modified polyolefin process used
    to make the polymer.

The report also estimates the future world market in ten years' time to be in
    the 30 000-40 000 tonne/year range.

BP/GE in polyketones collaboration deal-02/12/1996-ECN

  • The raw materials are fed into a continuous slurry reactor operating at 70-80°C
    and 50 bar pressure.
  • The key is the catalyst system, developed by BP alongside its metallocene
programme at Sunbury, UK, using a palladium complex plus borane co-catalyst.
Product from the reactor is washed and dried to produce a powder or can be
    further pelletised in an extruder.

Ketonex sale at advanced stage but no price agreed-18/10/1999-ECN

  • Aliphatic polyketones have found their path to market has been made harder by
patent disputes between Shell and BP Amoco. Shell has a strong position with
around 63% of the product formulation and application patents relating to
aliphatic polyketones. Its thrusts have been in automotive fuel contact
    applications and in small gears.

  • The latest announcement from BP Amoco that its Ketonex polyketone is
basically not worth developing in-house, even though it is now in a stable of
other high performance polymers acquired with the Amoco deal, is just another
indication of the difficulties of meshing technological innovation with
    corporate strategy.

BPAmoco is taking the line that, although the technology can compete in a
wide range of applications, 'it will be a better strategic fit for another
company'. The sale is being made as 'BP Amoco is focusing on its core
    businesses'.

  • Because the feed can also be multisubstrate, the
fermentation environment can still be provided with required protease inhibitors
that might degrade the product of interest, metabolites and precursors that
increase the productivity of the fermentation19
  • in a cyclic fed-batch culture, care should be taken in
the design of the process to ensure that toxins do not accumulate to inhibitory
levels and that nutrients other than those incorporated into the feed medium
become limiting, Also, if many cycles are run, the accumulation of non-producing
    or low-producing variants may result22
