Xu Shisen put down the phone and smiled. That was Canada calling, explained the chief engineer at a coal-fired power plant set among knockoff antique and art shops in a Beijing suburb. A Canadian company is interested in Mr. Xu's advances in bringing down the cost of stripping out greenhouse-gas emissions from burning coal.
Renewable Energy Focus - Six renewable energy sources judged to be best prospect for future, says report
"The best prospects for large-scale renewable energy production and net-energy performance remain wind and certain forms of solar, according to a study released by two California-based think tanks.

Low Carbon Electricity Systems | Leonardo ENERGY
-
This document is an overall report of the seminar “Electricity in the next decade”, the first in an annual series of events regarding “Low carbon electricity systems”. KEMA, ECI and Leonardo ENERGY are jointly organising these events.
Next to the topics presented during the first event, a few additional topics have been added in order to create a white paper and a more complete picture on the theme “Electricity in the next decade”.
The Future of Solar Cells - Better Generation
-
However researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimate that Indium's availability is likely to constrain the manufacturing of CIGS once production reaches the tens of gigawatts level, unless levels of recovery during extraction are increased.
6 Dangers Facing US Solar Energy | Solar Feeds News and Commentary Blog Network

This season I’m wondering, if the Solar Industry had a pocket-sized danger-warning reference, what would it say? What pitfalls might it point to?
SMA Solar Technology AG enters micro-inverters market through acquisition ~ Cleanergy.org - Energy Efficiency, CleanTech, Solar, Wind, Hydro...

Micro inverters are particularly well-suited for the use in small photovoltaic systems of 1 kWp or under. In some larger photovoltaic systems which use string inverters, shading of individual modules and the subsequently lower energy harvest of the entire system can be avoided by equipping and operating those modules with individual module inverters.

Something about this reminds us of Desertec: ambitious, expensive (though not in the same league as the €400bn Desertec), and with a bunch of big name vendors involved (apparently - there is no sign of it on either Mitsubishi’s or IHI’s websites). It’s also a long way off and far from certain.
Driving On Electric Glass: Solar Highway Awarded Prototype Funding
-
But there may be another way. A radical intelligent highway design utilizing solar panels, LED lighting, and heating elements has been awarded funding by the Department of Transportation to the tune of $100,000. Will the Solar Highway soon replace asphalt, and how will we all adapt to driving on glass?

Socratic Methods
Socrates offered a way out.
He suggested building a pleasant-as-possible house to live in, which he described as naturally “cool in summer and warm in winter.” To accomplish such a feat, he suggested facing the main portion to the south. With such an orientation, Socrates argued, during winter “sunlight will penetrate the shaded porch and shine into the main rooms abutting it, warming them up.” Conversely, in summer, “As the sun travels above our heads,” Socrates explained, “the roof will keep the house well shaded

.“Build the main rooms on the north opening to the south,” Socrates added. “Construct them higher than any ancillary structures that might block their south exposure to guarantee they would catch the low winter sun.”
Socrates’ proposed way of building made one in the audience remark, “I could not help feeling that he was giving a good lesson on the problem: how a house ought to be built.”
Calif. transmission plan looks to connect renewable energy-rich areas | CivSource
-
The state of California is trying to find ways to carry its abundance of renewable energy from areas that have it to areas that do not. Last week, the Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative (RETI) released Phase 2 of its conceptual transmission plan, designed to develop a renewable energy infrastructure.
Space Elevator: Science Fiction or Global Warming Cure? - PC World
-
A space elevator would essentially be a long rope made of nanomaterials, stretching from Earth to a counterweight at geosynchronous altitude, about 22,000 miles (35,406 kilometers) above Earth's surface. Special craft, like elevator cars, would travel along the ribbon, carrying people and goods into space in a matter of days.
Plastics That Convert Light To Electricity Could Have A Big Impact
-
Researchers the world over are striving to develop organic solar cells that can be produced easily and inexpensively as thin films that could be widely used to generate electricity.

- It can help reduce your credit card debt
Solar Power from Space - Business Exchange
Earlier this year, Pacific Gas & Electric, a major California utility company, signed an agreement to purchase hundreds of megawatts of power from Solaren, an SBSP company, beginning in 2016. Last month, another SBSP company, PowerSat Corporation, filed two patents for technologies that the company claims can shave billions of dollars off the launch costs for an SBSP system.

wattwatt - community for individuals interested in electrical energy efficiency - European Scientists Look To Globalize Solar Energy Grid
-
A global solar energy grid? That seems a bit farfetched, or is it? Based on current nanotechnology and expected improvements and innovations, European scientists are seriously considering that very possibility. This confidence and forward-thinking, which found expression at the recent European Science Foundation conference, stems from the promise of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) and biomimetics.
Solar cooking at home | BCIL Alt.Tech. Foundation: AlternateTechnologies for Sustainable, Energy Efficient, Green Buildings
-
We tried cooking using solar power at home. Not a tough thing at all and this info was available off the web. All it needs is a 2-wheeler rubber tube with air in it, a non conducting material that goes inside the doughnut circle of the tube,(maybe a wooden piece or thermocole) over which the aluminum vessel with rice and water can be placed, and a glass pane to be placed over the whole ensemble with no gap between the tube and the vessel. The vessel needs to be closed with an aluminum plate. Since it becomes air tight for the vessel and since the black body of the tube and the glass pane all bring in heat, the rice gets nicely cooked in summer within 3 hours! You cannot imagine the thrill we all felt doing this. Why don't you try it yourself too?
6 Reasons to Stay On the Electric Grid : CleanTechnica
-
Imagine using only the energy from the sun to power your home. You would never have to pay an electric bill again and or be impacted by power outages. It may sound great, but there are numerous advantages to having a solar home that is on-the-grid when available.
