    000

    on seven
    companies – ABB,

    AREVA T&D,

    ALSTOM,
    Fuji Electrics,

Hitachi and Toshiba - for violating the EC

    restrictive business practices (Article
    81). Siemens also

    participated but was not

    fined
because it revealed the existence of the cartel

    in
    question to the

    Commission. Between 1999 and 2003,
    Japanese and European

    producers
    of power

    transformers operated an oral market
    sharing agreement,

    referred
    to as a

    "Gentlemen's Agreement", where they
    agreed that the Japanese

    members
    would not sell

power transformers in Europe and that the
    European

    members
    would not sell

power transformers in Japan. The power
    transformers in

    question
    are used to

    modify the voltage in electricity
    transmission networks.

    The fine
    for ABB was

increased by 50% because it had
    previously taken part in a

US invests in Energy Frontier Research Centers | Leonardo ENERGY

    • In August, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the delivery of $377 million in funding for 46 new Energy Frontier Research Centers. The centers will be hosted by universities, national laboratories, non-profit organizations, and private companies. The research domains that were chosen offer a good sampling of those technologies the US Department of Energy (DOE) sees as potentially important in the energy landscape of the future. The funded projects are focussed on:

      • Improving the efficiency of photovoltaic systems; with particular projects dedicated to hybrid inorganic/organic PV cells and nanometre-sized PV cells
      • Advanced nuclear techniques
      • Carbon capture and geological storage (CCS)
      • Hydrogen, including the production of hydrogen as well as hydrogen fuel cells
      • Biomass, including energy-rich plants and the conversion of biomass into chemicals and fuels
      • Energy storage systems
      • Superconductivity (1 project)

Impact of market liberalisation | Leonardo ENERGY

  • Liberalization has improved the administrative efficiency of the electricity system, but what has been its impact on technical performance? Energy efficiency of the distribution system, its technical quality of supply and environmental performance are issues which where largely conspicuous in their absence in the debate, but maybe it is time to address them now. A discussion paper from Leonardo ENERGY.

European Academies Science Advisory Council - Transforming Europes Electricity Supply - full report

  • The study concludes that developments are required in
planning a European grid to ensure that investments are made in
the right places, in the way the grid is operated so that
maximum benefi t is extracted from a given infrastructure, and
in transmission technologies so that effective options are
available for environmental, operational, energy efficiency and
investment considerations. Specific recommendations are made in
    each of these areas.

Europe's onshore and offshore wind energy potential — EEA

  • This report provides a Europe-wide resource assessment of onshore and offshore wind potential in a geographically explicit manner. In addition to calculating raw wind resource potential, this study also introduces and quantitatively analyses the environmental and social constraints on wind sector development. Concerns addressed include the noise and visual impact of wind power, as well as the deaths of birds and bats that fly into rotor blades. The report also evaluates the future costs of wind energy production across Europe in order to gauge the potential output at competitive rates.

Home | BUILDUP

  • BUILD UP is a new environment for building professionals, local authorities and building occupants willing to share their experience on how to cut energy consumption in buildings. Diversity is a major strength of the EU and BUILD UP will promote the exchange of all the best practices, tools and technologies available across Europe for an effective implementation of energy-saving measures in buildings. When it comes to climate change and security of energy supply, there is no easy fix. It is only by working together that we will achieve a real impact.

EU greenhouse gas emissions fall for third consecutive year - All press releases — EEA

  • European Union emissions of climate-changing greenhouse gases (GHG) declined for the third consecutive year in 2007, according to the EU's GHG inventory report compiled by the European Environment Agency. The EU-27's overall domestic emissions were 9.3 % below 1990 levels, which equalled a drop of 1.2 % or 59 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent compared to 2006. The EU-15 now stands 5 % below its Kyoto Protocol base year levels.

EU Energy Law Newsletter

  • The Energy Council of Thursday 19th February focused on the second Strategic Energy Review. Inevitably, the Council was cautious agreeing concrete changes to existing rules or arrangements on the basis of the Strategic Energy Review. Instead it has cautiously welcomed many of the proposals tabled or announced in the Review, awaiting the detailed Commission proposals or the outcome of discussions in Council on the specific proposals. Nonetheless, the conclusions do demonstrate a willingness of the member States for some - probably gradual - change in developing a more Community approach to energy security issues.

European Parliament calls for adoption of energy efficiency target | Energy Efficiency News

  • The European Parliament has overwhelmingly backed a comprehensive energy plan for the region, including a 35% improvement in energy efficiency.

A large majority of MEPs voted to endorse the EU’s Second Strategic Energy Review, which was proposed by the EC in November last year.

The proposals form the basis of Europe’s ’20-20-20’ policy which aims to cut CO2 and energy use by 20% by 2020, and increase renewables by 20%.

wattwatt - community for individuals interested in electrical energy efficiency - European Scientists Look To Globalize Solar Energy Grid

  • A global solar energy grid? That seems a bit farfetched, or is it? Based on current nanotechnology and expected improvements and innovations, European scientists are seriously considering that very possibility. This confidence and forward-thinking, which found expression at the recent European Science Foundation conference, stems from the promise of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) and biomimetics.

  • Generation adequacy of the UCTE system should not be at risk up to 2015. About
20 GW of diverse generating capacities would have to be confirmed and
commissioned before 2020 to maintain the level of adequacy at an appropriate
    level.

EU Passes New Climate Directive « Renewable Energy Information

  • Agreement has been reached on the European Union Renewable Energy Directive that could paved the way for the economic bloc to achieve its plans for a 20% renewables contribution to total energy demand and a 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, the so-called 20:20:20 plan. The deal, between the European Parliament, the French Presidency, on behalf of the Council, and the European Commission, means that more than one third of EU electricity must come from renewables by 2020.
