Energy and Environment Monitor: Summary of EPRI Prism/MERGE 2009 Analyses Report: EPRI Presents One Roadmap to 2050 for Reduced-Carbon Electricity Generation
-
In 2007, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) released its first “Prism” model and Model for Estimating the Regional and Global Effects of Greenhouse Gas Reductions (MERGE).
-
EPRI updated both analyses in 2009 to reflect economic and technological changes that have the potential to affect projected emissions and the technologies to address them.

A robust transmission system is the cornerstone for large-scale integration of wind power in the United States. Therefore, perhaps the greatest barrier to achieving this goal is building new transmission to connect the large amounts of location-constrained wind resources to the load centers. Another goal-limiting factor is the lack of appropriate market rules across the various interconnections in the US. Furthermore any reversal of policy decisions made at Federal and State levels (e.g. Renewable Portfolio Standards) in support of renewable energy could send the wrong signal to the industry causing uncertainty in the markets, potentially stalling the investments in new wind plants. The reality is that there are five election cycles between now and 2030 so it is important that wind energy related policies are sustained during this period.Other potential barriers to achieving this 20-by-2030 goal include: a surge in the global demand for wind energy which could limit the supply of turbines in the US; another financial crisis during the next two decades which affects the credit and investment markets; and lastly the lack of skilled work force to operate power systems with high penetration of variable generation.
When ICT & Electro-technology meet | Leonardo ENERGY
"Once an electrical installation had been installed in a home in the past, that was it. So, when a domestic electrical installation was fitted, it was and in a many cases still is considered to be an unmodifiable fixture. In fact, it has always been quite difficult to make any changes to a classical electrical appliance once it is installed. Fortunately the arrival of integrated home systems means that such flexibility is now available to us (see: Definition of integrated home systems), even if the communications aspect (see: Increasing communication) is, admittedly, still in its infancy. By communications we mean internal and external home communications. The meeting of ICT technology and electro-technology in the home brings with it a wide range of new opportunities, both for the majority of homes and apartments as well as for the more specialist homes for the elderly whose mobility, for example, may be reduced. We went to find out more from FifthPlay, a daughter company of the Niko Group, totally dedicated to bringing together the worlds of ICT and electro-technology and to designing associated applications and services."
EUROPA - Press Releases - How is Europe doing in clean technologies? Visit the new Commission's online assessment system
-
Today, the Commission launches "SETIS", the online Strategic Energy Technologies (SET-Plan) Information System, which provides the latest research results on the status, forecasts and R&D investment figures for low-carbon technologies. It underpins the effective strategic planning, conception and implementation of EU energy technology policy and serves notably to the implementation of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan). SETIS assesses and monitors those technologies that have a significant potential to help Europe meet its energy and climate change targets, such as wind power, solar power, CCS or bioenergy. The Information System offers interactive tools to compare the maximum potential and energy production costs foreseen for the different technologies over time.

With the $4.5
billion in government stimulus funding acting as a catalyst, we've moved the
discussion from planning to delivery, and we're seeing growing excitement around
significant progress.

Liberalization of electricity market scrutinised | Leonardo ENERGY
-
Throughout the world, the deregulation of utilities like gas, railway, water and telephone is at the centre of many governments’ economic policy. The liberalisation process of electricity, however, is slower than anticipated. Both in Europe and North-America, for various reasons, a full-scale implementation of the liberalization of the market is being hindered. A lack of sufficient physical capacity to allow cross-border trade of electricity is only one of those reasons. In the long run, the prices of electricity can't be expected to go down. Or will they? A reflection based on the discussions at the World Forum on Energy Regulation, Rome, October 5-9, 2003.
UK faces power cuts within eight years - Times Online

The UK faces widespread power cuts for the first time since the 1970s,
according to the Government’s own predictions.
Demand for electricity from homes and businesses is set to exceed the
available supply within eight years.
European Academies Science Advisory Council - Transforming Europes Electricity Supply - full report
-
The study concludes that developments are required in
planning a European grid to ensure that investments are made in
the right places, in the way the grid is operated so that
maximum benefi t is extracted from a given infrastructure, and
in transmission technologies so that effective options are
available for environmental, operational, energy efficiency and
investment considerations. Specific recommendations are made in
each of these areas.

One of the more intriguing examples was from an inventor named Steve LeRoy who has developed a system to harness energy from lightning bolts.
Ford’s EV Charging System Allows Driving Using Only Renewable Energy | CleanTechies Blog - CleanTechies.com
-
Ford Motor Company has developed an intelligent charging system that previews how its production vehicles will interact with the grid. The unnamed system enables all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle owners to restrict charging to when electricity prices fall below a certain threshold, or even “when the grid is using only renewable energy such as wind or solar power,” according to Ford.

However, there are significant potential benefits for the Smart Grid that can be delivered by Demand Response (DR). But they may never be realized because of the politics of the highest part of the DR value chain—Resource Adequacy (RA) Reserves.
Alternative Energy Futures: The Case for Electricity -- Colombo 217 (4561): 705 -- Science
-
The energy trends of the past and their likely evolution in the next 50 years have been analyzed in the light of technological progress. It is concluded that society will tend to become less centralized than in the past and that it is possible to have future per capita values of energy consumption at the world level similar to those at present, with a substantial redistribution to allow for economic growth of the less developed countries. A condition for this is increasing penetration of electricity. The rationale for the suggested scenario is described, and prospects for electricity for both the industrialized and developing countries are discussed.
US marines in Afghanistan launch first energy efficiency audit in war zone | Environment | guardian.co.uk
-
US marines in Afghanistan run through some 800,000 gallons of fuel a day. That's a higher burn rate than during an initial invasion, and reflects the logistical challenges of running counter-insurgency and other operations in the extreme weather conditions of Afghanistan.
-
The costs of shipping water and fuel to the troops is also becoming unsustainable. The price of a gallon of petrol in a war zone can cost up to $100.
Jim Rogers: US Leads in Nuclear Power Production - WSJ.com
-
Investing in new nuclear power plants, which produce electricity 24 hours a day and seven days a week, can be a major growth engine for our economy. Nuclear plants can be located close to growing demand centers, and next to existing transmission lines. Renewables, which produce power intermittently, must often be sited far from cities and the grid.
Plastics That Convert Light To Electricity Could Have A Big Impact
-
Researchers the world over are striving to develop organic solar cells that can be produced easily and inexpensively as thin films that could be widely used to generate electricity.

Inhabitat » Hybrid Squared: Ingenious Energy-Generating Bike Rental System
-
Designer Chiyu Chen has conceived of an ingenious transit system that encourages the use of sustainable transportation by crediting people for renting and riding bicycles. His Hybrid2 system consists of a fleet of rentable bicycles that are capable of generating and storing kinetic energy, which is then used to power the city’s hybrid electric buses. Simply rent a bike, charge it up with kinetic energy from pedal power, and then return it to a kiosk - the station feeds energy into the city’s smart grid, and you receive a credit towards your next bus pass!
